  • Street Fight is a thrilling Academy Award®-nominated story of bare-knuckle politics in America. When a young unknown challenger named Cory Booker takes on the head of a powerful political machine, he discovers that sometimes elections are won and lost in the streets.
Gritty, funny, and surprisingly inspirational, the film goes behind-the-scenes in a rough-and-tumble campaign in Newark, N.J. It offers an intimate, unvarnished view of Booker before he became a U.S. Senator and regular fixture on national political talk shows.
Street Fight also explores the complex politics of race in an election that pits Spike Lee and Cornel West against Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, and features Bill Bradley and Chris Christie.
Directed by three-time Oscar nominated documentary filmmaker, Marshall Curry, and winner of the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival, the critically acclaimed film was called “the best American political documentary since The War Room” by the Washington Post.

After watching this, I wanted to look up Sharpe James and see what happened to him since 2006. In 2008, Sharpe James was convicted on 5 counts of fraud for giving public property to his mistress, which she later sold for a 6 figure profit. James served 18 months in a federal prison. He later appealed and one of the 5 counts was overturned, but the remaining 4 counts of fraud were upheld.

Wow I am so impressed with this man. Every time I hear Cory Booker being mentioned, it’s always about something he’s doing to help humanity in one way or another. I have the utmost respect for his character. He has a huge heart, and it shows. I truly hope that he runs for president & is elected in the future. We need more politicians with a heart like his!

I did not remember until the last 10 minutes that Booker had lost when he first ran. He won four years later when James did not seek reelection, and Booker was reelected to a second term before going to the senate. Booker is clearly a decent guy, although I am not a huge fan of his. After 8 years, Newark is still one of the poorest, saddest, most rundown cities in the country. I doubt anyone can fix it, although James was a total crook and fraud. It's career politicians and the ignorance of voters that makes a good case for term limits. No surprise the two biggest frauds there are, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, would support James.
Like him, they made careers out of taking advantage of poor, black people and causing more hate and racial division while pretending they are for justice. After "The Neighbors' Window," I will watch anything Marshall Curry makes. This is very well-done, though at only 80 minutes, it does seem very slow-going at spots. A sad commentary on urban American politics.

39:05-39:32 is my old neighborhood! Feels so strange seeing my old hood back in 2002 when it wasn't so awful and seeing former neighbors that we actually liked that are now long gone from the block. I'm getting a bit nostalgic. Funny thing is, though, I don't think Corey Booker visited our place. LOL! I would have remembered that! You can actually see my former childhood house at 39:12 as Booker is about to cross the street. It's the three story white house with the brick columns. Miss that house but I'm glad my family eventually left as the block started to change for the somewhat worse sometime after 2012 or so. It's going to be five years since we've moved away from there! So crazy! We still drive through the old block from time to time, but looking at the state of the old hood, we're kind of gald we no longer live there. Our old house is still there but now totally unrecognizable due to whoever owns it now completely remodeled the house from top to bottom.

You know Newark was way dangerous in 2002 then now this is a joke compared too 90s 2000s Newark it’s still bad but slowly changing I moved in 08 2020 don’t have nothing on the crime in the 2000s

    • @amityville2006
      @amityville2006 4 роки тому +1

@@ManManYaheard Well, I'm still here despite Newark being so "dangerous" in 2002. Yes, Newark isn't and will never be perfect. It has it's bad areas but it also has some albeit tiny good areas. Also, yes it does have it's crime but that crime heavily depends on what part of Newark you live in. The North part of Newark has it's share of crime, but not as much as the South side does. That's the part of Newark to stay out of and avoid at all cost! Even the cops don't like to patrol in that area, but that's where the department puts a lot of them when they first become cops. Yes, it's true Newark is slowly changing but the only thing that has changed so far is the downtown area, and last I knew it's the neighborhoods that make what Newark is, not just downtown.
A lot of newbies that move into Newark think Newark is so super safe just because the downtown area has been improved drastically which is not true. A true Newarker knows which areas to avoid during certain parts of the day, what areas to stay out of at night, and know to be back in their homes by a certain time because at night is when the unsavory people come out to play, and not in a good way. Also, a true Newark always know to be aware of their surroundings no matter where they're at, and to always look behind them from time to time when they walk to make sure no suspicious characters are following them or trying to cause them harm. Newbies don't seem to know or follow these rules. They still think that they're in their former safe areas and tend to jog, walk their dogs, and walk around with their expensive electronics unaware of the potential danger around them. Anyway, there are way worse places to in than Newark that have way more crime in both their past and present.

Where is cory boogers rants against the obama administration for not doing anything to lift up the blacks, to help them in any way ? Why don't the blacks insist that Democrats answer for themselves and explain why they have done little to nothing in black communities. Democrats want votes and that's where it ends.
Blacks need to smarten up and force the people they vote for to actually live up to what they say they're going to do.
All the poor black communities are Democrat communities.
If blacks continue to vote for people who will do nothing for them, then they get what they deserve !!!!

Watching this felt like one of the best arguments for term limits. Maybe Sharpe James started out as a good guy, but once someone is in office for decades the power starts to go to their head. There is too much patronage and corruption that ultimately develops. The fact that the city government was actually harassing people who supported Booker is egregious. That's not only not how elections in this country are supposed to work, it's not how governmental agencies are supposed to work!

I would encourage folks to read The Prize after seeing this documentary. I was inspired by what I saw on film and reading the book right after was a jarring experience. The Prize does not paint Booker in a good light. It shows him as a politician blinded by ambition that let the school system of Newark collapse on his way to elevating himself to higher office.
While I don't think anything in the documentary is wrong persay, I would note that the filmmaker is related to Booker's earliest and most powerful donors. So the idea that this film had neutral intentions, which I felt the filmmaker in multiple scenes suggested, is suspect.
Booker like all politicians is a complex figure and especially when it comes to NJ politics, it is important to remember that there are no heroes. This is still a great political documentary, one of my favorites, but the story it tells is just a story.

populist revolt see, that’s the thing, I did look it up and I haven’t found anything about that. I found an unfounded anonymous online comment from years ago by a purported gay man saying that booker assaulted him. It was never followed up on and even conservative pundits on Fox said it wasn’t true and a good example of character assassination/mudslinging, and called it a smear. Then I found an article written by booker himself in his college newspaper at Stanford, again from years ago (1992), and in it Booker reveals that when was young in high school, he committed what would be today considered sexual assault. He was at a party, consensually making out with a girl, he felt her up, she pushed his hand away, and he tried to continue. But in the article Booker is explaining how he knew soon after what he did was wrong. He now realized that because he went against a woman’s wishes in a romantic/sexual situation, even in a fumbling teenaged exchange such as his, how devastating that could be for a girl, and he therefore had to answer and come to terms with his own actions, and in doing so wanted to help shine a light on how society creates rapists by way of toxic masculinity that’s so ingrained in our culture, and how he wants to raise his future sons in a world where women are respected no matter what. I mean really, he’s using his own experience to explain how we’re all potential victims and perpetrators if we don’t address these issues. It was a call for sexual respect, but during the Kavanau hearings, it was dug up by Fox News in an attempt to smear one of the future Justices most aggressive questioners, Senator Cory Booker.... so what’s the one you’re talking about? What’s the one I’m missing that you know all about?
