I'm from South Africa. It's 42°C I'm addicted to this channel. I'm 54 years old never get to their. We never ever see such big ships. I love this channel ❤. Bucketlist no1.
Thanks for posting this. Love the different angles of the ship and the winter scenes. I saw her leave Duluth once while visiting the area, and have been interested ever since! She is quite impressive!
i thought it was too iced up to run the lakes, and they layed up for winter. or is that just on superior? I know its supposed to be the biggest on the lakes I heard, but I thought only icebreakers were the only ones to run in the winter for supplys or in front, No? and what is that huge plum that looks like steam I thought the ship was diesel electro, thats a heck of a lot of exaust if its not steam.
@@manga12 Superior’s shipping season runs from late march to early January, this was its last voyage before docking in Duluth for the winter. The other question is a little more complex but I’ll explain. So the Tregurtha is powered by four massive Diesel engines as to generate as much power as needed and after the diesel is burned in the engines, the exhaust then goes through a very impressive system of separators which remove impurities and especially harmful products from entering the air. The reasoning it comes out white is likely the temperature in this video
@@maxboerner3247 ah well its a ton of heat comming out, almost like a giant turbine, I mean its a large ship but I am not sure it has as massive as engines you find in something like the worlds largest engine the warzilla that powers the giant oceangoing container ships, seems this is putting out more emissions and heat then one of those.
WOW beautiful ship, great scene, nice to see a spirit of cooperation. Who has been in an aluminum boat late fall early spring and been chilled 🙋♂ Can not imagine floating around in that ice water?
I used to live on Klenk Island down at the end of Alter Rd in Detroit. I literally could be laying in bed watching the big boys slip silently past. My Dad taught me that the lakers had the wheel house up on the bow but it's not a written rule as the Tregurtha is back astern like a salty. Just something I remember! Stay warm everyone!
If you pause the video in the minute 1:00, you will see an image that looks like Realism Painting, painted by Jules Brenton or any another Realism artists. For me that image is speechless, the lighthouse, the street lamps, the fog, the icy weather, the ship, the sky and many others elements are talking in silence in my mind.
I'm an Indian , not red ..regular brown from India...been to Duluth many time as a cadet right up to Master.....love the Great Lakes and love America ..🙏
This video was a random suggestion a few months ago.It started my now minor obsession with the Great Lakes, the freighters and all their history.I just used Black Friday promos to book 5 nights next May. 2 in Duluth,1 in Grand Marais and 2 in Lutsen.I wonder how many others had 1st time exposure through your channel and have gone down the same Lake Superior rabbit hole I have.
I am really confused. I thought they stopped shipping for winter. Wasn’t the Fitz trying to get in one last run before shutting down for winter, when she went down?
They generally stop at ice up. Remember the weather service is much better than when the sinking of the Fitzgerald happened, not to say it couldn't happen now but I think the odds are much better these days that they ships will avoid the truly bad weather.
Amazing film! What are the whistle signals? 3 short blasts for 'operating astern propulsion' I get, but the subsequent higher pitched musical tones, what do they mean?
All Great Lakes captains are fully qualified as pilots for the harbors, rivers, and canals. These huge ships (1,000 feet long) are maneuvered with the world's best skill in and out of harbors without the assistance of pilots and rarely use tugboats.
rode my bike to work this morning in Minneapolis without checking the temp before I left. Got to the office and saw it was -17°F 🥶 think I might've stayed home and worked remote if I'd known beforehand 😂

Hello Albert!
You might get your wish one day 😉
I hope you make it. Bring a warm coat, it's probably not 42°C there. 😆
EVER
Hope you get to visit us in Minnesota! We'd love to have you!

The crewmen are certainly earning their supper today, it looks frigid out there. Happy new year from Montreal!
Always like to watch the big ships come into Duluth!! A big fan in Pennsylvania!!!😁😁
The Tregurtha is my favorite ship. I always make it a point to watch her arrive or depart when I go to Duluth in the summer.

My favorite Laker is the Arthur M. Anderson

@@bryanphillips6666 me too Bryan, mainly because of its connection to the Fitz but another beautiful ship

Beautiful pictures - every frame is wondrous. Top notch.
I'm watching from Japan.
I saw this kind of bulk carrier for the first time.
Thank you for the wonderful video

It’s actually not a problem. I sailed Gilf of Alaska in February
Happy new year captian and crew of the tregurtha..stay safe and sail in safety

I remember driving down there in my late teens, I thought it was funny that a canal and fences seperated Detroit from the points
wow
Watching from Missouri- was right there last summer.
Love the Lakers....am from the Niagara region and spent time watching ships navigate the Welland ship canal...impressive at night...thanks for this .
What an impressive vessel! Beautiful. That water is slushy. So so cold🥶🥶🥶
That's impressively sharp photography. Thank you.
"... every Mame and Jane and Ruth,
from Weehawken to Duluth..." loves a big, majestic, ship vid. Thanks.

I love how it looks like it's floating on clouds like it's an airship or something.

Wow!
Very really nice view.
Very beautiful scene.
Thanks for sharing.
Have a nice day today.
Anchors = eyes
vertical bow ice = nose
and an ice frown
Niiicccccccce!
That initial shot would make a very nice painting. Lovely backdrop.
Just mind boggling how something this large can float
Thank you so much
I’ve rebuilt cylinder heads for this ship. MAK43 engine.
The opening shot of the Paul R Tregurtha is beautiful.

Incredible footage! Greetings from TEXAS! 😎🇨🇱
Prior Park Point Resident, hearing the ship call and the bridge call back brings warm fuzzys. (Even in the overnite hours)
Outstanding. Impressive ship.

There many things to see and do between Duluth and Grand Portage, you’re gonna wish you had more than 5 days, beautiful country, you’re gonna love it.

I would like to know as well.

The Tregurtha looks so strong & mighty!
I was lucky enough to see that ship depart Duluth when I visited there in 2002. It's huge. 👍😊🇨🇮
Beautiful footage!!! Loved it!!!
Dad was in the Merchant Marine after the war and was a wheelman on these.
Fans of the Big Paul here in New Jersey!
What a ship😳 wow!!!! That’s awesome to watch👍👍
Me father was second mate for a couple of runs back in the 80s on her. What a marvelous ship
Absolutely breathtaking
Thought these guys were suppose to shut down for winter from December to February.
Anybody know.?
Beautiful photography,
We saw that boat coming in the harbor when we were up in Duluth
What a gorgeous ship
Looks a bit cooler there than here in Alabama 😀
Amazing video love it
Quite a sight ,never gets old
The queen of the Great Lakes!
Nice to see the supply chain still moving!
May I ask why this ship is held in such high regard?
That is ship and a half man! Wgt must be160K ton?
Fabulous photography.
absolutely beautiful. Love ships
Looks cold we are in Massachusetts digging out new snow fall
Brrrrr. Safe sailing. The ice cycle attests to the frigid sailing conditions. A Florida fan.
What is the point of this? Not sure?
Misericórdia! Que trem enorme!! Translate, please! Saludos desde mi querido Brasil 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Todo vídeo tem um brasileiro! 😂
Temperature was below zero upon her arrival
I didn't see a single safety vest on the ship. Still rolin old school up yonder I suppose ey.
Looks like the season's not over until the fattest boat is in.
Watching from Winnipeg. Looks toasty warm there compared to here. . .🥶
Cold.. Cold..cold that's Minnesota for you...
Amazing film! What are the whistle signals? 3 short blasts for 'operating astern propulsion' I get, but the subsequent higher pitched musical tones, what do they mean?
The only horn signals in the video was a captain's salute from ship to bridge them the bridges response.

That a steam ship?? Run on coal?
Wow I was just there this past July 😱😍
Nice video. Do pilots board the these ship to assist in entering the Great Lakes Harbors or are the ship's Captains allowed to bring them in?
I don’t think they need harbor pilots.

@@barbcorbett784 Thanks, I live on the East Coast where all large ships ae required to have a pilot on board when entering the ports.
Same on the west coast perhaps it's foreign captains even with pilots they manage to crash into things
The salties get Harbor pilots as they are unfamiliar with the Great Lakes
so, when does it get cold there?😁
Loaded with ice! 😄 Yes indeed!
That is so beautiful!
Front of the ship looks a little sad though. LOL
True listen to the horn lol
@@arnoldflowers8686 😄
@ 5 minutes I wonder what the heck all the pounding was
That looks cold 🥶
What I like about this is it cost only 50 cents to park your ship here, and they have a hot cup of tea when you step onto the dock.
That beautiful, sunny sky is deceiving. Temperature is 4 below zero and crew is reacts as "business as usual."

YIKES!
Looks like a painting coming to life
Why does it look like it's steam-powered?
From where?
Now that's a mighty ship!
This is really cool.
So what’s that banging noise?
Hello from Kansas!:)
What does that carry ?
Looks so cold over there
It sure do look cold!
What does it haul?
That's awesome it looks CGI
Captain had to ound the horn to wake bridge man!just in case!🙄😄
Fascinante
How many lifeboats?
It looked like there were two other boats out on the lake there. Any idea who they are?
The one on the left I’m not 100% sure about, either American Mariner or Joseph L Block. The one on the right is definitely the American Spirit
Where I this port?
A brisk day by the looks of things.
Coal ? Should put the video in black and white . Would make more sense then.
Needed another 5 minutes on that video.
Looks like the Tregurtha isn’t too happy about all the ice on her bow, but nonetheless knows she’s got a job to do.
Con tàu Khổng lồ bạn oi Lộc cả chúc bạn mạnh khỏe
Looks like admiral byrd coming from the poles 🥶
When does the Soo shut down?
These ships freak me out. Wouldn't get anywhere near them if I was on another boat.
What else normally gets shipped in or out of this port?
Stuff.
Taconite pellets
Hi from Aussie get video
Looks cold I am from Massachusetts digging out of 10inches of snow
Its too cold in Minnesota to snow.
Do ships like this have bow thrusters?
I do not know.
Yes they do. There is a painted symbol on the bow denoting its bow thruster equipped
