    Low brace height really helps if you have a shorter draw length too.

    Lower bracehight makes a bow more efficient, because the way of acceleration is longer. But it results in a less forgiving behaviour.
    Although the string needs the right amount of twist, that it works properly. More twists result in a stiffer string and less efficiency, less twists result in rolling.
    Handshock and more noise are a sign, that the bow has to absorb more energy and creates more vibrations, which could reduce the lifetime, depending on the bow.
    Personally I choose a quiet and stable setup. I do not like to compensate the noice with fur or something in the strings. And it makes no sense to make the bow less forgiving, just that the arrow is a small amount faster. Speed just help if the target is more than 30-40 meter away, but less accuracy on that distance is worse. Lower bracehight makes only sense on a flight competition.

    I think one point being overlooked is that by changing brace height, you are actually changing string length. This is why draw weight changes in an inverse relationship to brace height, which in turn, changes length of the power stroke.

      There is very little stretch in all bow strings. No matter what you do. Only twist , allows for variations in length. Usually, 1" is the most you can expect.

    well,,, I set mine with a scale. All my bows are basically hunting bows ( small game ) I have 2- 40lb bows and one 43 lb bow. My draw length is 27 and a bit inches. The law here is 40 lbs with in your draw length so I have them set with a scale to 40 lbs in my draw. I also shoot wood arrows for 3d , so I will also adjust brace height in the practice range for arrow flight. Usually just a turn or two one way or the other depending on how the arrows are reacting to the weather.

    Yes I set brace height by feel then measure it for the future. Each bow I have is a little different. between 5.5 and 7" I imagine that compound bows have. Stuff like this too for let off as well But I don't really know much about those. I like the way you educate it works.

    Shorter BH = a longer stroke = longer dwell time = more developed energy = speed = vibration . Yes Sir , you are correct.

    This makes sense . The arrow starts to slow down as soon as the string has imparted all the speed and energy it can into the arrow. We would love to know exactly that is , lol. If a nock was too tight it could slow the arrow down when it released. many questions, lol. I assume that it takes less enery to make the arrows speed to increase after the initial momentum is started, Is the arrow reached its peak speed when the arrow leaves the bow or was it still accelerating as it left. I know it doesnt increase after , lol. but if the power stroke were increased (brace height ) would there still be useful energy to be available, you studies seem to say yes !

      So, many factors influence the arrow speed. Using an arrow rest vs arrow shelf, or shooting of the hand. Everything takes energy to move something, applying Newtons laws of motion here! what you are looking for is optimal energy transfer, which is where bow, string and arrow materials come into play, the less drag on a thing the faster it can go. There is an optimal distance for brace height as it directly affects arrow oscillation, to many oscillation cycles in the release of the arrow and the more energy that takes up. Rotational forces on the string also uses up energy. Even the sound the bow makes is energy being converted and not used to push the arrow.

      Most places have minimum poundage for bows when hunting depending on the game. For example, where I live your bow must shoot 42# to hunt a deer, anything less and you could be charged with being unethical. Just be sure to pay attention to this so you don't run into any trouble with you MNR, DNR or whichever organization that patrols your neck of the woods. But there are calculators you can figure out what momentum your arrows have, if you shoot fixed broadheads you'll want around .40 slug force, if you're shooting mechanicals you'll want at least .50 slug for 1.5" and under any over 1.5" cut you want to hit .60 slug force at least. These numbers are for shots within 50 yards, and further and you'll want to bump up the momentum. Just type "arrow speed calculator" into Google lol

    Obviously, you know your stuff. I understand that shorter string equals higher brace height. I also understand that a longer string means farther travel before the arrow leaves the bow. I just can’t wrap my head around how a lower draw weight equals faster arrow flight. Logically, at least for me, more lbs of force means a faster arrow. Also, doesn’t longer travel on the bow mean more contact on the bow, which could slow the arrow down? Awesome explanation though
