How do you tell if the tomatoes are packed in purée vs water? Does it typically say on the can?

Yes. It will say tomato puree if it's tomato puree. If it says tomato juice instead, it will be watery.

You can also shake the can and hear a difference! Watery mixtures feel very easy to shake and make a sloshing noise versus a puree which is thicker, harder to shake, and makes more "glop" noise!
