I had one soft egg last year about a week after I got my first egg from my hens. I chalked it up to the girls being new to the whole egg laying business and it hasn't happened since. Same thing for double yolkers, just a few at the start but none since.
Been around chickens all my life and cannot remember ever seeing one like that! Goes to show no matter how much you know you can always learn something new...
Great tutorial! BTW, I love your cat! I have a big girl too but, she could not care less about snuggles. Merry Christmas Patara and family! May all your eggs have double yolks and all your critters do what they're supposed to do well in 2018. Peace and Love
Thanks for the info Patera. Especially for bringing up how stress can be a factor and to be observant of situations that may negatively affect our feathered friends. Merry Christmas.
Mr Peaches tapped you on the shoulder! One of my kitties does that to get my attention and it's such a sweet, polite, human thing to do, that it always makes me smile. Please give Mr P some love from me. ~ Lisa
I have an ISO Brown and she has consistently layed soft shell eggs for several weeks but what's more surprising is she lays 2 or 3 a day. I have them on a good quality layer feed. She is young. An old farmer said her egg stem could be changing. She has also given us some white eggs too. This went on for several weeks. Now everything is back to normal.
WOW, great timing, Patera! I just got 2 soft shelled eggs over the weekend. My first thought was, of course, calcium. I feed very little commercial grain so it is something I always keep in mind. I have had a feral cat hanging out and about and have wondered if it was getting into the run or coup. Now I really wonder if the soft shelled eggs were from stress over the cat. Thank you for posting this JUST when I needed it. :)
Patara this was great! I'm going to be a first time chicken owner this Spring. I'm soaking up your advice as fast as you put it out there! Lol! Thank you for all of the invaluable information you share!
Thanks a lot! I was thinking I had not seen a soft shell in a long time. I went to gather eggs and had 2 of them! My hens are not beat up, but the stress of the cold moving in might be a factor. They burn more feed off trying to stay warm, So lacking in Nutrients is the factor.
As always love your videos especially those pertaining to your chickens :) . How do you determine, each year, how many more chickens you will add to your flock in order to keep up with your demand for eggs??
That's interesting. I've never seen a soft shell egg before. Thanks for the info! On another note. My son has 14 chickens, 2 of them being roosters. He has been having issues with the girls laying their eggs everywhere...except in the coop! He keeps the coop clean and tidy for them, and still finds their eggs everywhere. What do you suggest for this dilemma? Thanks in advance. God bless y'all 💕🙏
We haven't seen Mr. Peaches in a while... We've missed him as you can tell from the comments. Hey, if he brings in the views, why fight it? xoxo from sunny Arizona... 76F today.
Great post, great information. Mr Peaches looks like a cool kitty:)...just as a distraction, if you get a chance, check out a small you tube site from Pam Aus. Her cat Suitcase, shares the porch with Mrs Eagle, in Unalaska. She has a few posts with the Bald Eagles in Unalaska..her last post was "Mrs Eagle Wants That Corner Spot Still"...If you haven't seen Bald Eagles up close, its worth a spy. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to ya'all.
We got one cat that way paws at you till you give her attention but that is the first time I have seen an egg like that my step brothers and sister had chickens learnend how to butcher them from my step mom but I spent the summer out there and weekends during school
hey Patara. Here's a question for you. I have my favorite turkey with a feather problem on her breast, and it's cold up here in Canada now. She has lost all her feathers on her breast and is bare to the world. What could have caused this? Molt? And what can I do to help her out? She hangs with the chickens and I can't get her to go in her separate pen because she likes being with them. She's fine in health but for the feathers. When I try to separate her from them she freaks out from separation anxiety. I keep all the birds in one barn to share heat but they have the option to go out in the day for fresh air of course. I'm worried she will get too cold with no feathers on her belly.
I have 3 little Bantam hens. One of mine just minutes ago laid one feet from me on the grass in my back yard. That makes 8 in the last month, maybe 6 weeks. My wife swears it's one of the others, Lula Belle. Might be 2 of them laying the soft eggs or even all 3. We've always put oyster shells out for them and sometimes even egg shells. We give them a small handful of mealworms usually everyday, laying mash and the occasional leftover lettuce from salads. Other than that, they are in the back yard all day eating bugs and grass. In the evening they go to their coop with the door latched until morning. We live in town, privacy fence, no animals stressing them that I know of so I'm getting concerned. All of the advice I'm getting says calcium deficiency. I just feel it's something else.

I had a chicken lay an egg this summer and it had what looked like an umbilical cord still attached to the egg shell.
I've never heard if this.
Our duck had two soft shelled eggs due to stress. But she hasn't had a soft shelled one since then.
Weird! What do you do with them? Feed them back to the chickens, compost them, or just discard them?

I've heard of it but never saw one. Wow how odd! is there a feather from a formed chick there?
Are these eggs able to be hatched if fertilized?
I had a chicken lay an egg like that after she got attacked by a dog
O my gosh,I had a egg like that when i first saw it i thought maybe it was a alian chicken egg lol

I have all brown egg laying chickens, so why is one of them laying a white egg? And why does she lay it everywhere but the nests!
