Thank you for the video, much appreciated. This explains a dilemma i had last year when i found a shell less egg on my balcony (minus a nest) I assume that a pigeon dropped it. After pondering what to do with it i ended up throwing it away.
This June 2 pigeons decided to build their nest and successfully hatch 2 eggs. The squabs are now just over a week old & doing well. The parents are doing a great job & i leave extra seeds out for them.
It makes me wonder whether the same bird left that shell less egg last year but i guess I'll never know.

My opinion is that "less shell eggs" are not necessarily an indicator of calcium deficiency. The primary cause is the overly rapid calcium encapsulation of the yolk. This could be due to the yolk detaching too quickly, which could be a result of excessive lighting exposure to the retina. At the same time, the pressure of the egg, gravity, and other factors may force the hen to expel the eggs
Premature yolk detachment: This can happen if the yolk is not properly attached to the follicle wall.
Excessive lighting exposure to the retina: This can disrupt the hen's natural circadian rhythm, which can interfere with egg production.

I know this is an older video, but I just found your channel and am bing watching your videos lol.
The one reason you didn't cover is parasites.
If your chicken has worms it can cause them to lay Shelless or soft shell eggs.
I have had this happen when I was a new chicken owner years ago.
I was getting soft shell eggs from 1 duck and 1 hen every time they laid.
I changed feed. I gave them Oyster shells free choice.
I added nutra drench to their water.
    Nothing helped.
Then I seen a worm in the ducks poop.
I dewormed both flocks. Ducks and chickens.
Never got another soft shell egg.
Worm will deplete your chickens of nutrients. So if they have worms ot doesn't matter how much extra calcium you give them the worm will deplete them of it or keep them from absorbing the nutrients.
    Hope this is helpful.

Absolutely! Anything acting as a stressor that weakens their immune system could cause shell less eggs! Glad you found a solution for your flock! 😁

Hi! I have 2 6 month old black australorps. One started laying 2 weeks ago and has been a rockstar ever since! The other just started laying yesterday. The first egg was normal, small, but just like the other girls first eggs super hard shell and all and in the right spot in the nesting boxes! Today, I found a soft shelled egg out in their run no where near the nesting box which sort of concerned me. I then noticed her keep trying to nest where she let the soft shell egg out and actually got on video her letting out an egg with no shell at all! My other girl has been laying perfect with not one soft egg shell and an egg every day. They are the same breed, same age, and from the same place! Idk whether to be concerned or if it’s just her body getting used to laying? She is laying 2 weeks later than her sister I just hope it’s not a buildup or an egg bound situation? If she’s letting eggs go that wouldn’t mean egg bound right? She’s still eating, drinking, and everything normal. I don’t notice any penguin walking or lethargic-ness

Hi! That all sounds normal to me! Some hens go right to laying normally - no funny shaped eggs, shell-less eggs, etc. while others take a little more time to make normal eggs. And you are correct, if she’s passing eggs, she’s not egg bound. 🙂
I’d keep watching her and if it doesn’t correct soon, start supplementing with calcium. But all of that is totally normal for a new layer. 🙂

Poor girl! Since it only happened once with one hen, I wouldn't worry about it but if the problem persists definitely start them on crushed eggshells or oyster shells if you can get them. :) And if you ever have any questions feel free to send me an email at cedarshadefarmnj@gmail.com :)
