Today, we’re in Washington, D.C., on the hunt for some of the city's most delicious eats! Two of my amazing subscribers recommended that I check out Ben’s Chili Bowl, a legendary spot with deep roots in D.C.'s history. Let me tell you about the fascinating story behind this iconic restaurant.
In 1958, newlyweds Ben and Virginia Ali began renovating a historic building at 1213 U Street in Northwest Washington. With just $5,000, they transformed the space into what would become one of the city's most beloved eateries. The building itself dates back to 1910, originally home to the Minnehaha Theater, a silent movie house. Later on, it was converted into a pool hall by Harry Beckley, one of D.C.'s first Black police detectives.

Ben’s is a legendary establishment and they are good “smokes” but those half smokes on those downtown DC hotdog carts are the best. Chili, cooked onions, raw onions and mustard was my favorite. My sister use to bring me those as my yearly birthday present.

Back in the day (80s & 90s) U street was sketchy but there is and was multiple music venues that made my life better growing up. If yal'll viewers never had a half smoke from Ben's you better ask somebody!

Yes Matt DV, you're in my hometown that I love!!! Shipmate I have to admit I've never eaten there but it looks good. However, I did recommend two other of my favorite places. Another Black Owned Business, Horace and Dickies they were in DC but gentrification they moved to Maryland. And the other place is Jiffys across from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland also. I'm glad to hear you like DC because I Love It!!! I will be in DC this weekend I hate we missed each other. Keep doing what you're doing your Shipmates in SC are watching!!!

Man o man, this place is the best. Been down to the U Street corridor and it's on the money! Went to Ben's Next Door too which is owned by the son. They actually lets you order the hotdogs from the original and they serve it right at the bar.

How come I never heard about Ben's? Used ta hit DC a few times, specially when my son was younger, and never knew about this. Woulda been better than McDonald's for breakfast when u got a whole day of walking all over. Thanks for this, might try for a visit soon, dunno if before or after the election.
