Very rarely I seen a production car 4cyl utilizing a water-to-air intercooler; note the M235i 3.0 I6 twin turbo & RS3 2.5 I5 turbo still retains a air-to-air unit. Goes to show the crazy steps AMG had to take to make this level of power in a 2.0 liter motor.
Ronald van de Kant The 3S-GTE was born & bred to be a racing unit. The Celica GT4 used it not because it was necessary but for homologation purposes to be used in racing. Heck, even the hottest GT4 ST205 had less power than the comparable Lancer Evo & Impreza STI! This AMG unit is never destined for racetracks, but for road use.
+Trades46 very true, plenty of these on the racetrack tho. Was just mentioning it to illustrate water to air intercoolers have been around for a very long time, and are not a revolutionary new thing on production cars and definitely not in the aftermarket. It was bound to happen in today's small displacement turbo era.
Trades46 they used a water to air intercooler to keep the boost pipes short which improves response and allows for efficient heat exchange without heat soaking into the intake air.
At these compression ratios it is very tricky whether the fuel-air mixture will not detonate. Also these high combustion and exhaust valve temperatures it is very likely to burn the valves or wear off easily the turbocharger bearings resulting in much lower horsepower A Marine engineer
Short air ducts are very important for quick response and power. I pity the guy that has to service that motor. But then again you have to consider their legendary quality and durability.

As the turbocharger uses sliding bearings i wonder whether this car has turbo timer. As a car switches off the engine cooling oil is not supplied to the T/C.This will literaly cook bearings resulting in an unbalanced T/C. I have seen videos this car doesnt have turbo lag. Turbo lag is the response time from the engine when you hit the pedal. However turbo lag protects the T/C from rapid changes in exhaust gas pressures. I suggest you after some km to check the spaces in turbine side on CLA
Yes, it does have a timer built in. I had a gla45 amg, and when I first got it, I kept wondering why the car and fan was still running after I parked it and went inside my house
I would also have laughed at the diesel question...had I not driven an Audi SQ5 twin turbo 3L v6 diesel with over 650Nm or torque (from memory)...It even sounds fantastic! Anyway, impressive small capacity engine...sure you can tune an engine, but i'd like to see it come with the same warrante... Now please please please stop serving us up automatic 'sports cars'...give me a manual any day...I want to be involved.
I doubt this engine will get much more hp with such a small twinscroll turbo at 26psi stock. I don't think 400hp will come easily or reliably. But if u could get a nice 400-415 hp out of it on stock turbo it'd probably be able to run 4 sec flat 0-60mph. 450 hp probably get it to 60 in 3.5 sec.
German cars are not tuner cars, they don`t like when people tune their cars, and they make it hard, while most people tune their sti`s or evo`s to above 400 hp, this car will be a stock car for people who don`t like tuning the car.
Lucas Schaaf I got 100 whp from my evo x with boltons and tune, no turbo upgrade, no cams, no intake manifold no exhaust headers, and it is reliable for 3 years now only with oil change, and most people can confirm this, now no german car I know of can do this without major modifications.
I have a friend, who owns an Audi A4 1.8T from 2002, he had an ECU remap and got 70 bhp out of it. A 1.8 sir. VW gets 90bhp more out of some of their engines, just by a slight turbo tune (and of course pressure increase). But you are right, they dont like it, but its very doable! However im sure an EVO is a lot more fun to work with and own!
couldn't be further from the truth. The CLA45 engine can be bumped from 360hp to 400+ hp with just a tune. Add a downpipe and a bigger intercooler and you are talking 430+ . People are already doing it, with ease.
Its not built any cheaper, build quality of the R32 is supreme, you obviously have not driven one. It is so much different than a four banger with alot of hp. Cheaper in price yes but not in quality. Put a supercharger in the r32 and this Benz would get left.
2016 version of this engine has 381 HP and 475 NM. Great but i would like if they take it to the magic 400 HP. So Mercedes come in the game and all ready now show how it is done and beat Volvo and WV ass whit a 500 HP 2 liter egine i dare you guys. maybe whit twin turbo and a supercharger.
500HP on a 2.0L? I don't think that's necessary yet and would likely affect response times. Adding a supercharger means more weight and friction, that would throw the cars balance off and increase emmissions with worse fuel mileage. Its fine how it is for now, no need to chase for numbers and ruin refinement
Whit the modern teknologi there in engines today, i dont think it would ruin rifinement. The supercharger is also thats why they shut ad it. More boost at low RPM and that will give higher pressurer on the exshaust to spool op turbo´s faster or they cut use one those ned elektric supercharger manufactors are beginning to use and even it that is not enoufh to get rid of turbolag they cut use a hybrid setup where the electric motor can boost and help the petrol engine until the turbo´s ae spooled up. There are solutions to that problem bigger turbo can cause like turbolag. I am a huge fan of small power engines. Because that is low weight and lots of power. A 500 HP v8 would deffently be much heavy than a small 2L 4 banger. Only downside i se with a small engine compare to a big lump of a v8 is the engine sound, but even can be deal with by using a croosplane crankshaft insted of a flatplane crank. The sound would much different and much better.
