Hard to say. They each have their own challenges. Mandolin is probably a little easier to get started on than banjo cause some of the simple chords are fairly easy to learn. But playing at higher speeds on mandolin can be very challenging because you're using a pick and have to be very accurate while banjo you get to use three fingers which makes playing at higher speeds easier. - Mike

maybe use a metronome going at a pace like the speed of a song like shuckin the corn and show how they chop to it like in a jam session
