  • Disassembly, inspection and cleaning (ultrasonic cleaning in Part 2) of the two Hitachi HSC40 carburettors on my 1984 Yamaha Virago 1000.
Time has come that my bike just wouldn't run properly. I've found so many small problems with the ignition (spark plugs, coils/wires and caps), fuel filter and so much more I'm surprised it ran at all. Lately, it's been running so rich it would foul the plugs but mostly the rear (#1) cylinder, backfire and quit. The carbs needed to be rebuilt and the process is similar to all Viragos whether they are Hitachi or Mikuni carbs. I'll be installing the K&L carb rebuild kits in Part 2.
Any comments, questions, tips or other pointers would be much appreciated.

Amazing video, I just recently bought an xv1000 1984 and this has cleared up a lot of my questions. You are clear and have experience in this department.
Forget the other b.s. comments, A+ for the time and effort on describing how to attack this professionally

Hey Kevin - thanks for the kind words. This was one of my first attempts at making a YT video. I still have no idea what I’m doing when it comes to content creation but at least I put it out there to share with people. I just hoped that someone like yourself would find it helpful. I’ll be making another restoration series soon and I’ve learned a lot about content creation so I’ll make them a bit more easy on the eyes and ears. Got the bike running again so as soon as I”m back home from work I’ll post the final segments. Cheers. Ken

I just bought a 1982 XV920 and the carb is the Hitachi's. I had a ton of fun getting everything working the tank and oil were drained but the carb bowl was full of neon green colored fuel. The butterflies were so gunked up they wouldn't budge a mm. I still have not opened the plungers screws won't budge at all.

Hey I have a 1984 virago xv1000 too and I was wondering if you had the same problem or just an advice to resolve it .
The fuel punp keeps priming fuel into the carb when the bike is on. It started after I changed the relay for the turn signal.
I was thinking it was a failing fuel pump. What do you think ?
    Thanks !

That’s a tough one to diagnose without actually being there and seeing everything. The fuel pump will always be cycling on and off when the bike is running. The relay unit also controls the fuel pump relay so maybe your new relay unit is defective or something has gone awry between the two. If the fuel pump remains on constantly, then it’s not the fuel pump. I’d say have a second look at that relay unit you replaced and see if the fault follows it. Also, try the basic stuff - make sure all the connections are clean and have good contact. The system works as a closed circuit - when the pressure drops, the relay in the fuel pump relay sends a signal to the relay unit to turn the fuel pump on. When the pressure reaches about 3-5psi (it’s pretty low) the relay unit signals the fuel pump relay to turn the fuel pump off. If you have a multi-meter you might be able to see who’s the culprit.

I did but the segment was deleted...I'm making a few new maintenance videos that will be the "low fat" versions of this one along with the valve adjustment, oil change and stuff like that. Short, sweet and to the point with just the important stuff. I'll be posting them shortly.

Helpful Video have an 84 xv1000 myself. What was the dilution ratio you used to soak the carbs and did you put all the parts into it?

For just standard degreasing I use about 1 part Purple Simple Green (HD) and 4 parts water. That's for the light stuff. Spray Nine is by far the best degreaser there is out there...and I use that about 1 part to about 10 parts water.
