- Canadian consumers fed up with the high cost of groceries are gearing up to send a message with their wallets.
A planned boycott of Loblaw and its affiliated stores is gaining traction, while a petition calling for an investigation into the company for alleged profiteering is nearing 100,000 signatures.
Global’s Abigail Bimman reports on the frustration and the planned action.

Remember the bread price fixing. Loblaws was involved.
Remember PP has Loblaw lobbyist on his team they pay her and we the taxpayer pay her remember that when you Vote
@@momtur4875 Who is her?
@momtur4875.....wore blackface? Remember Trudeau committed a federal offense and tried influencing the attorney General then fired her? Remember the emergency act? Free Aga Khan gifts. Admires China and allowed election interference. I could go on and on...far worse criminal activities. Remember that when you vote.......2025 common sense will crush the authoritarian Trudeau/Singh deal with the devil
Well that was Westons and Canada Bread. I think Westons was still owned by Loblaws at the time. Westons struck a deal that if they admitted to price fixing first they would be able to keep their government bread contracts. Canada Bread is banned from competing for government Bread contracts for 10 years.
"Through George Weston Limited and various holding companies, the Canadian branch of the Weston family currently owns or controls over 200 companies, including the Loblaws supermarket chain and the Shoppers Drug Mart."
Food prices have risen 30% to 50% in two years. That's significantly more than the rate of inflation.
I'm sure those high fuel costs and carbon tax help a lot. . . . .
Carbon tax plus GST on that tax, on the producers, delivery drivers transferred on to the consumers than your carbon tax, then inflation so ya 30-50% increase sounds about right … how’s that vote for Trudeau treating you??
When butter was 3$ lb and now at 8$ , that is no where near 30-50%

This Not The United States 🇺🇸 The Word Corruption Is Banned In Canada 🇨🇦 And Australia 🇦🇺
Not be racist but our country is corrupt from some certain foreign peoples
They need to start using the word Capitalism! That's the root problem. Corruption comes from a capitalist structure, as does profiteering, as does inequality and so many other problems. But I know corporate media will not call out capitalism, but that doesn't mean the public can't get more informed.

I don't shop at any loblaws or affiliated stores for years. I have chosen not to shop at any of these stores since the bread price fixing scandal years ago. It's not difficult to maneuver around this group of retail stores. There are plenty of other choices.
What are some other options for shoppers?
During the pandemic prices of groceries did rise. I acquired out of necessity, a well stocked pantry, that we use on a regular basis. I shop loss leaders regularly to keep my pantry stocked. This keeps costs down. I shop independently owned grocery stores as well as Metro,Sobeys, FreshCo, Food basics, Giant tiger. In the summer months I shop at farmers markets. There is a list online, (Farmers' Markets Ontario). There are many in the city limits. I have a vegetable garden in the summer. We have cut down our meat consumption considerably. We eat vegetarian meals 3 to 4 days per week. I bake my own bread regularly. I have managed to whittle my grocery cost to usually less than one hundred dollars per week.
@yuwuf3722 local shops, and ethnic varieties store's. They usually even have lower prices
I don't like the gouging but you can't find prices lower than Superstore. I tried everywhere. Who cares about bread, it is so cheap it hardly matters. I always buy bread at 30% off because they always have some. Walmart has no sales and they give no points. I save about $200 per month just on optimum points. I have $250 in points now and next week I will have about $300 and get a free shopping of $300. Costco is good for nothing. You have to pay for a membership and then get 1 % back with a credit card they have for you. Canadian Tire gives 3% back in points when you buy groceries, but not at Walmart or Costco, only Superstore and other grocery stores. You get 10cents back per litre of gas at superstore. That is cheaper than Costco gas and Costco always has lineups for gas and the store is always jam packed with people.

THIS is journalism that defends & supports ordinary Canadians!
We're tired of being gouged for the basic food we need to survive.
I'm boycotting Loblaws this month--I've already switched pharmacies to a smaller independent pharmacist near me, & I'm spending every penny of my grocery bill in May somewhere other than Loblaws.
When we Canadians stick together, we are POWERFUL! Do everything you can to send a message to Galen Weston that we're sick of paying for his luxuries!
Global is literally why we are here.
This isn't news its social media
Youre literally partaking in the destruction of this country. . . .
Do you know the real root problem that Global did not mention? It's capitalism. Yes market capitalism is the disease that spawns the many symptoms like profiteering, inflation, inequality and food insecurity. That's the root problem we need to be united against and to build a better system.
With Jason Hickel and Less is More, there are options.
With Peter Joseph and "A Viable Society" or Zeitgeist films there are options.
With Michael Tellinger and Ubuntu Contributionism and the One Small Town initiative, there are even more real, working options.
Which do you prefer? Because just yelling at the wind and trying to boycott is not going to solve the root problem, I'm sorry.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Global News has the blood of journalists on their hands.

I haven't shopped at Loblaws since they boosted about their 'HUGE PROFITS'. That was last year. Consumers have more power than they realize. Use it

Just visited No Frills Supermarket in my area a couple of weeks ago,boy was I in for a shock. They have increased prices on everything not by a few pennies but by a few quarters.I just could not believe.Even their slogan on their weekly flyers "Canada's most trusted grocery store for slow prices" has disappeared. WOW
I've also noticed the Flashfoods fridge is loaded with food, and with alot of meat. We ain't buying the hyped up costs, so it goes for 50% off before BBD. Nothing wrong with getting meat at half price, but u gotta jump on it, blink and it's gone. Alot of times my grocery shopping list consist of what's available via Flashfoods. It's pretty sickening the sticker shock of food now. There's alot of FFS out loud when I'm walking the aisles..
I used to buy old fruits and veggies that used to be 50% off so i can save a few pennies, today the fruits are in worse condition and only 30% off, SHAME on Loblaws and Management, i seldom visit Loblaws nowadays. Oh, in the good old days those old fruits were dumped in the garbage!😮
Story lacks some basic research
1 - Same-store profit growth
2 - Cost of goods sold growth
3 - Interest expense growth (retailer and suppliers)
4 - SG&A expenses growth (retailer and suppliers)
5 - Tax rate growth (retailer and suppliers)
6 - Survey measuring consumer's efforts to actually shop at competitors
Without this data the report is not objective journalism, it is simply an amplifier of the "blame the last visible mile" pamphlet.
I'm not in any way defending Loblaws, consumers as a group are better off comparing prices between competitors. I'm just asking for objective data-driven journalism
And you'll never get it because true journalists no longer exist.
Every grocery store in Canada the prices are up, this is crazy.
Yeah. . It's almost like everything is being ruined by government policy. . . . Who would have thought

They raised the carbon taxes and taxed the doctors from 50 percent to 66 percent.
What is wrong with that statement?
It's not wrong.
And when PP gets in with a Majority and gets rid of the tax, we will see who did their research.
I’m seeing increases in everything: rent, utilities, GAS, groceries, eating out, dental expenses, child care expenses, and so on.
It’s not just a Loblaws issue, the government screwed up our purchasing power and cost of living.
The Government doesn't control your landlord or private companies. This has all just been price gouging to see how much money they can steal from Canadians before we break.
! As a community everyone has to pull together!!! Shop at local farmers markets, buy in bulk and split it with your neighbours or grow your own and split it with your friends and neighbours. One way to protest is to do your shopping and ask for a discount, if they don’t give you a reasonable discount then leave the cart there groceries and all. If enough people do it they will listen.
I remember about 15 years ago, $100 on groceries for one person was splurging! Now it gets a couple days worth of food. This is the end result of no competition and it’s happening in all markets! Hardware stores are even worse.
This is the result of Late Stage Capitalism. Capitalism creates the incentive for profiteering, mega-corporations, inequality that favours the rich while capitalism fails on its own merit by busting and booming every few years, leaving the lower classes with bags of debt.
The system is the sickness. It is about time we get serious about change. Wouldn't you say? Or you want more of the status quo?

Simple solution. Buy your groceries elsewhere..
maybe they can pay back the 12 million TAX PAYERS MONEY their buddy Justin gave Loblaws to buy new freezers in 2019

We need to have more grocery store options - outside of the big 3 and outside of the urban south. I would love to see more independent grocery owners or cooperative grocers. But the pathway into grocery retail, from what I read is not easy. That would be where provincial and federal government support could be effective.
Pretty hard the competition is to great because they run the wholesale market as well unless you want to get by with small profit margins. These big chains have bought up the small competitors years ago
Open up the competition. We need new grocery companies in Canada NOW !!
the competition is wide open, no other grocers want to open in Canada because the market is so small. New companies will charge the same for food either way.
Nothing is stopping anybody from opening a grocery store.. 😂 If you can sell groceries for lower than Loblaws, go for it- you'll make a fortune. 🤷♂️
The Pandemic gave Loblaws cover to jack up prices far above what supply chain issues caused. All the grocery chains did it, but Loblaws too it to the extreme.
FINALLY someone gets it!
thank you!
all of this 'sudden inflation' is DIRECTLY traced back to the China-based Coronavirus.
ALL of the current economic uncertainty in prices, commodities and real estate is just the AFTERMATH of the Chinese Pandemic. Interest rates are where they are now BECAUSE of inflation. Inflation happened BECAUSE of the drop in supply of goods / services. The supply dropped BECAUSE widespread production in facilities and industries was halted during the course of the Chinese Pandemic with millions of workers everywhere refusing to get vaccinated. Throw in some politics at the hand of the already incompetent Trudeau government, and what you have is a recipe for total financial disaster that we are all literally (and figuratively) paying for NOW.
none of the above can be refuted - they are all proven facts.
The media try to divert attention from real reason for price increases - high inflation caused by out of control government spending, money printing, out of control population growth. Not that many people know that prices for most of agricultural products are controlled by government agencies. Government also keeps import duties hight to keep prices for Canadian product artificially high.
I'm comparing the prices of the items I usually get between Loblaws, Metro, Longos, and Walmart. They're pretty much the same, so what's the point in boycotting Loblaws per se?
Groceries, Gas, mortgage/rent. Just ridiculous.

Let's see people actually do it. This is how you curb corporate greed 🖕
Back in Victorian era canadian housewives boycotted dairy products to demand they lower prices the result was that they won and milk prices fell.

As these big corporations pay more in taxes aswell as the farmers and truckers the prices will skyrocket, Thank Trudeau for that, It's not because of just greed and not because of lack of competition, if there was more grocery chains in the nation it will still be the same result, In the past these grocery chains prices weren't so high as there are now because of the carbon tax, boycotting grocery chains is yes going to hurt them but then you will suffer for it because there isn't many small grocery stores to go too.

Another problem with the big stores is that they don’t want people using cash to purchase products. The quick checkouts do not have any options for cash and they don’t want to open more regular checkouts.
Buy local and summer farmers markets will soon be open.
Demand a cashier. Self checkout is supposed to be a conveince. The store pays employees to scan/bag your goods. If they aren't giving you money off for doing their job, insist they provide the cashier.
@@kyleellis1825 this is only happening at my local superstore, they said there was no options for cash at self checkouts, having said that all the other types of stores I have visited have cash options at self checkouts.

Okay. That was the answer when I asked at Joeseph Howe in Halifax when the lineup was halfway down the store.
Seriously, there's a window to the office above the cash. Whomever is running the store should use that window every now and a again and RUN the store.
Making people wait for 2 cashiers for longer than it took to shop, ESPECIALLY the elderly is pretty bad behavior for a flagship store.
Cutting back on staff anticipating less customers is the antithesis of what you should be doing.

Perfectly nice young lady, and no problem with her, BUT if you think a 20 year old can explain to a 50 year old the complexities of economics, they wouldn't be a cashier at Loblaws.
