- Several retailers, including Loblaw and Walmart, are stepping up security with anti-theft measures, but some tactics such as receipt checks and Loblaw locking wheels on customers' carts have sparked customer backlash.

Hot take: Don't FORCE me to do a cashiers job then stop me on the way out to make sure I did the job properly. If you're not 100% sure that I'm not stealing or cheating the system with bad procedures then PUT CASHIERS BACK ON THE GODDAMN REGISTERS! Stopping "random" customers, (let's face it, this is some of the worst profiling I've seen in my life), to look over my receipt and then go over my entire purchase to verify I played "by the rules", then STOP FORCING US TO BE TEMPORARY EMPLOYEES! Jesus, this isn't rocket science.
Not even close to what they are trying to do. You have no idea the amount of theft going on in these places. They just want proof of payment, not checking every item on the receipt. Take a look at San Fran, stores are closing and moving out because of theft. It might be inconvenient, but if you paid, it’s not a real big deal. Relax, they are trying to prevent/deter the rampant theft in stores.
Well said.
THIS!!
If anyone stops me at this places of which I seldom go, because there not cheaper as they say, after I have paid my groceries , I will sue . If I go through the cashier and pay, why would they want to do such thing and embarrassing people who didn't do anything wrong? Well I won't bother going in there. I did go to no frills for some coffee, and told them that I am aware of what your doing, if this happens to me , I said, I will not put up with that quietly.

"theft and organized retail crime" - you mean what Loblaws is doing to the rest of us?
Have you ever been chased around like a niglet 😢
Could not agree more. Korahn27
Ummm, ya. Who are the criminals here??? 🙄 No wonder we’re incensed! They’re stealing from us and making us out to be the criminals. Disgusting. They’re needs to be laws not allowing big business to do both.
😂
That's chump change ....Talk to a farmer there's a reason they never vote liberal.. because this is what happens .. excessive taxes on families, businesses and farms , carbon taxes and government over printing and over spending ....
Problem solved - get rid of self-checkout. No brainer.
That means they have to hire more workers. They rather make everyone go through these anti theft measures
I have seen several thieves first thing on a Saturday morning walk in and walk out with bags of groceries so...
@@rgen28 yep, and this way they dont pay for the check...YOU provide it.
I used to work at walmart before self checkout was a thing. All the time, people would complain about the checkout wait times, the long lines and lack of cashiers. After self checkout, the complaints stopped- people could leave within minutes of entering the checkout aisle. Personally I like self checkout because it’s easy and fast, boomers still complain about self checkout because it’s different but they were the same ones complaining about wait times before self checkout was implemented. Major chains won’t hire more workers, that’s the real issue. They just want to save every penny.
Agree
The grocers created this problem when they installed self checkout
Stop asking us to self checkout. Problem solved. Have workers on the floor to assist people. Stop being cheap and then you don't loose out
Remember, if you see someone stealing food; you didn't.
Loblaws reported $529 Million of profits in Q4 of 2023. They're doing fine.
Metro has paid out dividends to its shareholders every quarter in 2022.
You know what would stop theft? Paying people a living wage and controlling rent hikes
Some people can't handle working or they don't want to work. How do you stop them from stealing if they don't work?

Also they forgot to make it VERY clear, you are NOT required under law to comply with any receipt checks at anything but membership stores!
You can be sure that I will not comply. The first person I will call, if I am illegally detained is the police.
Then you should be banned from the store.
@@worstknightmayor4439 Oh would that be because they are breaking the law, or because I am not breaking the law? Store are public places that have no legal right to do what they are doing.
@@worstknightmayor4439 Banned me then
You don't have to comply, but you wont be shopping there because of store policy at membership stores.
Buy your $100 of groceries, if you are annoyed by the receipt check take it all straight to the returns counter and get a refund. If everyone did the same they'd change their policy very quickly.
Stealing food, i aint seen anyone stealing food... But i sure as hell have seen companies stealing labour produced profits
I've seen people stealing booze a few times
My friend and I were almost knocked over by a thief leaving a grocery store in Ottawa. He wasn't going to stop for any receipt check. It IS annoying to watch people steal and get away with it.
I see people stealing anything everyday
if I ever get receipt checked at a retail store, the product goes back and I want my money back. I'll find another way.
Now there's a first rate just response.
As a retired lost prevention officer who was active for over 20 years in retail loss prevention I can tell you now that there will be lawsuits. As stated in the criminal code of Canada , if a store owner or staff member physically detains a suspected shoplifter, they could potentially face charges related to assault, false imprisonment, or other offenses depending on the specific circumstances. Some Provinces may also have even more strict laws that apply to false imprisonment.
So why are bouncers allowed to physically remove you from the establishment.
I would not and never have stolen from a store, so if I am ever held as a suspected thief there will be hell to pay, and pay they will. The law is not on their side as far as that disrespect for their customers is concerned.
Okay then stores will close, like they have done in many locations because of the significant levels of shoplifting. You can't talk about what happened in the past. Some cities are legalizing shoplifting because of some progressive thoughts by some governments. Either that or you will have to order and pick up without being allowed to enter stores, that will be measures to prevent shoplifting. As the article says it's not a simple theft anymore it's organized criminal thefts.
@@fridayfriday3948 I agree with you. I have never stolen anything either. Would be so very embarrassing to to be checked. Would feel like we are under suspicion
FYI - I was at the Carlton St. Loblaw on Friday. There were separate 'lanes' in the vestibule for ENTRY and EXIT. No personnel checking your receipts and a Toronto Police personal closeby.
Walmart now has cameras in your face at the checkout machines
And can we have pictures of the store owner and managers too?
🤦 Living minimum wage, tied to inflation. So our aristocratic overlords can't price gouge us right back down into poverty.

Lower prices, than maybe the thefts will lower too!
In Canada merchant privledge does not apply. A receipt check is not legal without just cause. Because the merchant is under no obligation to provide a receipt they are not permitted to ask for a receipt. If you are clearly visible purchasing items at a point of sale, then by law theft could not have occoured. This is true in the US. Refuse to show a receipt unless they provide a reason for the request. When you are stopped for a receipt, you are being detained with out cause. Govern your self as such. Why am I being detained, am I free to go, and I want my lawyer are all perfect ways of engaging with security or police, especially when you have done nothing wrong.
Hire some cashiers, shut down self checkouts.
Problem solved.
This wasn't a problem until most customers were forced to check themselves out, or wait in lines for hours, because the company doesn't want to hire cashier's.
If you look at it, the companies are actually stealing free labor from their customers, or hours of their time.
Sad but I'm guessing there's a few min wage cashiers that don't scan for their family and friends too.
Since they don’t have to provide plastic bags and cashiers I bet they are saving some money there.
what was wrong with having cashiers? Teres still about 10 employees standing there watching u scan ur items anyway??? how are they saving money?
literally
Walmart has no authority to detain me.
Simple solution, hire more cashiers and remove self checkouts.
There is no legal obligation to show receipt other then membership organizations. They can not detain you without physical proof your stole. This will open lawsuits and rightfully should!
Edward Snowden talked about digital intrusion years ago. He is right but how do we escape every camera, every type of internet intrusion?
Just like the shopping bags pretty soon it will be bring your own cart.
Facial recognition to get into the store is coming to a store near you.
Don't believe me they're already taking your picture at the self checkout.
if a person is using a self checkout i can understand wanting to monitor to make sure people are not forgetting an item. when a person is going through a cashier, it is the cashiers responsibility to ring in the items and there is no need for a reciept inspection. walmart and loblaws should stick to the cahsier method as that was a better way of preventing accidental theft and theft in general. the same with the dollaramma stores as i prefer to stick to the ones with a cashier.
Here’s an idea, have a human process the purchases, at a cash register. We’ll call them “cashiers”.
The decline of society
We are experieincing the greatest welath disparity since the Great Depression. My mom made 21X more than me-there is a great generational wealth gap and unlike her, I have never and will never work 40 yrs for the same employer. Ièm Gen-X, weève been robbed.
Great interview. What's an example of an item someone may steal to resell on line? I mean, what items that are small enough to steal that are worth posting online to resell? It certainly wouldn't be a can of beans. If it's makeup items, I certainly wouldn't buy anything on kijiji. Anyhow, most of us are not thieves and these security measures are horrendous.
I’ve seen a guy stole tote bags full of beer. Not sure if he’s planning to sell or just enjoy himself. Probably $400+ worth of beer and liquor
@@Jayl__ Thanks. I wonder why security cameras plus human security never saw a big back pack being filled with beer. Maybe a store employee in on it so turned a blind eye?
Wal-Mart has face recognition at the self-serve. Wouldn't it be fair for us to have photos of the store managers too?
@@spicybeak69 Next time I go to a Wal-Mart I will check that out. They have about 20 self-serve stations and about 4 regular cashiers. How greedy can they get? It's not enough that millions of people shop there. They pay employees minimum wage. Now they want us to be "loyal" to them by throwing out a few reward points like we are stray dogs in order to keep us coming back. And now they want our faces. Edward Snowden is right.
Pictures of managers at the customer service desk
Actually, there is a picture of every store manager at the courtesy desk, with their name.
Just put a piece a paper over them. They have no right to film you. Your not employed there
Get rid of self checkout and put cashiers back in the stores, but bottom line is greed
People need to stop using self checkouts, if they ring your items in then there is no need to check mt receipt!
We are just dollar signs
I wonder if these security gates meet fire/evacuation codes. Some stores have blocked off the entire front end of the store eliminating many options for people to get out in an emergency situation.
My thoughts exactly!
Maybe if the cost of living wasn't so high people wouldn't feel the need to steal to feed themselves and their families
Dealing with a problem caused by their own decision to price gouge the public.
I don't believe they should check your groceries bills!! It's makes you feel like you are a theive, it's ridiculous and shameful 😒
People on drugs who shoplift really don't care about consequences. Everyone else has to face hassle
Last time I went to Walmart(about a year ago) they had implemented the receipt check.
I haven't been back since.
They can pound sound.
If I am using self checkouts don’t try to look at my receipts I am doing YOUR job if you don’t trust me you don’t trust yourself
Their reasoning a bull! If high cost items were the reason, why did I see >$100 face shavers on the discount shelf easy for the picking.
The reason why they are doing it is because groceries have become so expensive and large grocers are making record profits. They are clearly not hurting if even with “increased theft”, record profits continue to occur.
How much extra money is spent on extra security because of all the increased pricing ?
Feelings! Who cares, I just want them to keep prices down! But I’m sure any savings due to drop in theft won’t be passed on to consumers.
The receipt is your personal property, it is your proof of purchase. In the USA even a cop at Christmas tried to make me show my receipt at Wal Mart, I asked him am I being detained ,he said again I need your receipt I said do you suspect me of a crime again he said I need your receipt I said I do not consent to unlawful searches or demands.
I then left as he followed me and he said I will get your license tag and if I look at the footage and see you stole I will come arrest you. I made no reply and simply went home. Folks just like cops can't just stop you and go through your wallet or purse the same applies to your receipt. If a cop has no power then certainly a Wal Mart employee can't demand crap from you unless you are a member like at Sam's club or Cosco for instance.
I'll never show my receipt. You think I stole something, feel free to call the cops. Hire cashiers. Problem solved.
I must admit..grocery theft increases ...times are hard.
Time for disruption in grocery retail. A Zero Waste grocer organized as a worker cooperative.
If you're in Québec, private security laws offers you some protection. Not everyone are entitled to look into your stuff or worse, detain you. Anyway, cashiers are not certified security agents and should not put themselves in danger.
People don't have to take it personally. Unfortunately it's always the bad apples in bunch who spoil it everyone and it's not different here.
Walmart has had a lot of thefts especially in the States side. These changes already happened there so it's no surprise that's now here.
Things are tougher for people and if you haven't noticed more and more people are going homeless. Doug Ford already knows that the higher the poverty, the higher the crime rates. So this is a sign of the times unfortunately
People DO take it personally.
The majority pay for their groceries.
Turning the stores into prisons will only mean more and more people will shop online.
@@joemadden4160majority of people still want to see and touch what they buy especially produce and clothing

A few weeks ago I was walking out of my local Fortino's after shopping and being checked through by a cashier, and was walking through the first set of exit doors when my cart's wheels suddenly locked and an alarm started to sound. I didn't understand what was happening and tried pushing my cart out of the way of the door, worrying it would close on me. A young employee came over and I explained the wheels seemed to have locked up and he smiled and said yes, it was their new security system. He asked for my receipt which was in one of my bags somewhere. He noticed the orange 'thank you' sticker on the cake I'd bought and said not to worry about the receipt and he clicked off the alarm and the lock on my cart. I am a 66 year old lady who has shopped at this grocery store for the twenty-five years I've lived in my town. I was so embarrassed and wondered what about me made them stop me. I'll never shop at a Weston owned grocery store again. NEVER.
I don't feel any guilt. I'd rather be checked than have grocery prices go even higher.
Unfortunately Grocery food prices will continue to go much higher regardless of this measure because of continued billion dollar spending and printing money by the government.
Just say "no". I do not steal, nor do I have the time to dink around with this extra step. If they saw me steal then fine, ask me to see if I stole and do whatever, but since I never do steal, they should never ask me to show proof of purchase. If they want to deny me access by banned me, I am fine with that too.
They don't mind stealing from us but don't you dare rip us off
still cannot legally stop you at the door and force you to show a reciept. Canadian laws are specific about detention. Costco is the exception as it is agreed to in the membership contract
The cost of all these security measures just bring back the cashier. And further more if you want me to ring through my GROCERIES THEN STOP TREATING ME LIKE A "CROOK"
Theft has to be stopped not only at groceries, but also in every other corner of Canada.
"Let's push self check outs, but let's also make you feel like you're accused of stealing because we've made it easier"
All those people who once said "If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about" when others spoke about the rise of surveillance years ago are now bitter about the effects of what they felt so complacent about.
I don't care about freedom of speech because I have nothing to say...
Costco is a choice, so i get the receipt thing...kinda. but groceries are a necessity, and to be made to feel like a thief after we've been gouged by retailers is so sad and wrong. What a horrible world were trying to exist in.
They will soon wonder why people stopped shopping there
How much does food / fuel theft contribute to inflation - 😮
Not much because these large corporations write off their theft losses on their corporate taxes. If they don’t pay any tax then they will maneuver a cash refund.
Just show them the receipt. It's a minimum wage worker just trying to do their job. Be respectful and if the staff is rude than file a complaint with the manager.
Let's talk about how metro shareholders have been collecting dividends on grocery profits while regular people go further into debt.
Just so you are aware.
Loblaws monitors its customers on CCTV.
So, the receipt checks is just an excuse to treat YOU like a prisoner.
Shareholder profits must be down. After all, they're the really important parties.
Loblaws missed their first quarter sales targets for 2023 and so if you held any loblwas stock, youd have lost money. Just did a finance course and had tp look at and follow stocks and i happened to choose loblaws and RBC. Loblaws is in the mud
IMO there are TWO (2) possible solutions to this. 1st, make everything ONLINE ONLY. 2nd, they can create shopping carts where once you put a product in the shopping cart, it then automatically scans the product, everything gets added up, and when you are done shopping you can then pay. Therefore, there would be no need for receipt checks or even self-checkouts/cashiers.
I have stopped shopping at Walmart they have been raising food prices much higher than it should be ? Refuse have them call the cops and waste everyones time each time they ask!
I've dealt with this for years. It's everyone's turn now!
😁
Costco has been doing this for years, what's the big deal?
They tell you in the video that Costco can do it because they are a paid member club and it is mentioned in the terms and conditions of your membership that they check receipts.😂
It's ridiculous 😒 it will make people feels like they are thieves.
I get robbed before I even hit the register. I'll refuse to be dehumanized. Then leave. They'll have no legal right to detain me. I don't shoplift. You touch me? I'll charge you with assault. I know my rights.
If you're not stealing, what's the big deal. Costco always asks to see your receipt.
Love this! Personally I'm tired of paying and watching people just walk out without paying and not being stopped, I'm guessing they probably know the people working there too.
Well, 2 stores I’m not shopping at again. I signed up for this at Costco, where I am able to get most of my groceries cheaper and a better quality. Plus Costco is good to their employees, from what I have been told. I didn’t sign up to have my receipts checked at Walmart or Zehrs. Not going to happen. Plus, if they are only randomly checking receipts, there is definitely potential for lawsuits..
Somehow this will be used to justify higher prices. While making it easier to steal, I heard that self checkouts still more than make up for losses from theft by saving money not employing humans. This is not a justification for theft.
I shop at my local farmers market
Fantastic. Hire the cashier's back
You're absolutely right hire more cashiers and at the same time you have to ask yourself because they're turning away customers they're probably losing more money because customers don't want to shop there then they are trying to prevent from being stolen
All of us should start going to a person to cash us out. If they can’t trust us to cash ourselves out while saving money by not hiring cashiers why not go back to the way things were? I’m done cashing myself out. They over charge us for food, and are becoming billionaires while they take more from us they save even more by having us cash our selves out!
People should see it as a good thing..several stores have closed in certain areas ( especially in the us) due to high theft.
Yes!
Costco checking receipts is really a joke. They barely even look at the receipt, are usually talking to another employee, and certainly dont look in reusable bags. I honestly don't know why they even bother.
I just refuse to show receipt
As a retail worker let me say this. Nobody likes the new measures. Having to do things like lock stuff up makes our job harder and it makes stuff suck for you. But at this point there's really no choice. We're not talking about a little bit of stuff we're talking about Millions out of the store I year. My store went with full 130,000 loss a year 2.3 million. Adding people won't even help because now people steal in front of us with no remorse. I hate the security, but I get it. If our houses where robbed once for a few thousand bucks we'd take measures They are losing billions.
I had some ideas on theft deturant
They spend so much money on all these new security features, then under pay staff and over pay customers.. why do people still shop there?
To save money and to put people out of jobs...they cteated this monster called Self Checkout which they cant control now😂😂😂...so bring back the Live Person, close the self checkout, and problem solved!
Why not lowered the prices! For groceries so people can afford to buy groceries.
Time the laws favour the business and employees working at the business and not the thieves. And yes a business has every right to check your purchase ticket. And get rid of self checkouts everywhere.
Suck it up people. I work in retail. Thieves have more rights than anyone. Thief is very high. As a employee , they check our bags every shift as we leave the stock . Suck it up people😂
I don't work in retail....
would you like to see my receipt?
up it suck.
Nothing wrong with added security measures. If they don’t implement consumers will eventually end up picking up tab
Is your life worth it to check my receipt?
gonna waste a lot of cop time following up on illegal searches at groceries.
It’s amazing how every part of this country wants to make folks feel like criminals . This is not the Canada I grew up in.
So grocery stores raise their price by 10%, ask us to do cashier's job but instead of someone thanking me on the way out for giving them more money and working for free, they pretty much treat me like a thief. Is it just me or it doesn't seem right?
Haha
Maple garden loblaws looks like fort knox.
You failed as a reporter not asking these two to comment on the self-checkout developments and their impacts in the last few years. A complete failure to reach the true reason for the advent of these "checks" at the exit. You failed!! Do a better job next time, will you please!!
People are complaining about EVERYTHING, now! I have set off alarms because I have a Metal Bar in my leg after fracturing it. I respect a person checking my cart, and I get the respect BACK. One teller had an amazing sense of humour, and, told me I must have a Magnetic Personality. When it happened a second time, at a different store, we laughed when I told him I was turning into The Terminator.
That's really interesting. I have a huge metal rod in my collar bone because I broke it. I have never ever set off any alarms or decetors anywhere; not metal decetors or store alarms.
Don't have to show u my receipt at Walmart
If you don't like what those groceries store are doing then quit shopping at them. Only thieves don't like these security check.
There is no need to be angry if you are not stealing at grocery stores. Those who are annoyed are actually stealing from these stores.
Walmart should have vending machines instead.
Shop your local Co-op!
Don’t shop in cashierless stores
