I made this over the last couple of days. I am a relatively inexperienced sewer but followed your tutorial and my bag turned out great. You would probably cringe at my stitching in spots but I am happy with the results. Thanks for the great video. I think I found a new hobby.
I'm so pleased to see that you have claimed the "T" Method for Sewspire, Andrea. It's a fantastic way to construct a bag and I've never seen any other tutorials using it. You really are very clever.
I loved yet another wonderful tutorial of yours. You explain everything so well and make it so easy. Thank you so much for sharing your gift of sewing. I've learned so much from you in the short time I've been watching your tutorials and I've been sewing for at least 25 years. I look forward to your next tutorial!
I love this bag! I am a school teacher and need a new school bag and I made one for myself with some red and white stripped canvas. Thanks for the video.
I love this messeger bag , so practical and hard wearing . Tough on the outside and pretty inside x just another one of your brilliant designs x Thank you for sharing xx
I love this style of bag. Men could also use this bag if it's in the right colors. My son used to have a vintage look messenger bag with a red cross on it like the medics used to carry in the army that he loved but the fabric was flimsy and ripped apart. I think I could make this in the green you mentioned or even a tan color and he would like it. He's an Eagle Scout and used his bag on hikes or campouts. This looks very sturdy and I like the vintage look you get with use. Thanks for this tutorial.
You are going to love the waxed canvas Wanda! In the studio parking lot yesterday I backed in to a humming bird feeder and hummingbird food spilled all down the outside of my new waxed canvas bag. No problem at all. It just wiped right off!
You made this pattern look so easy to make. I love the design and thanks for taking us step by step through everything! I will be sporting this bag very soon!
Hi Andrea! What a beautiful bag! Do you remember which weight of waxed Canvas you used? I went on the website and there seems to be quite a few choices and wanted to know which weights of canvas I should be purchasing? Thank you so much!
Your machine must be industrial, even tho it doesn’t look it. That’s some more pressure on a needle to get all those layers, great job with this project, Your method for attaching these bottom panels is wonderful, I’ve always loved waxed cloth.
Very nice bag, Andrea. I want to make a masculine version for my son for college. What do you think of attaching the shoulder strap with D rings and using a metal buckle with a slider bar to make the strap length adjustable?
Wow Andrea! This bag is perfect. I love the color and all the details you added to the bag. The pops of color with the lining is so pretty. I’ve been behind on watching videos. Not enough hours in my days lately. Lol I so want to make myself a bag out of this fabric and it will also be the Nutmeg with the Olive a close second. Those colors are perfect for any season. I think a bag made with both of these colors combined might look great too. Maybe the pockets and strap out of Olive and the rest of the exterior out of Nutmeg would be pretty. I will probably make it all out of the Nutmeg since I love the color so much. Did you use any different type/weight of thread to sew the exterior with? Thanks for sharing. I think this is my favorite bag of all. Happy Week sweet friend. 🌸🦋🌸 🌼🐝🌼 ✂️❌⭕️Pam
I love the idea of combining the nutmeg and olive. I used my standard 50wt cotton thread and having been using the bag for two weeks now without any issues. Let me know how your bag turns out! XO, Andrea
Another beautiful project! Did you choose to use the t-method for this bag so you could add the pockets to the side versus boxing the corners (like you did in the large shopping tote?)
Excellent question Angel and yes, the T Method allows you to add side pockets; whereas the boxed corners would require you to sew a tube for the pocket.
Thank you Toni! That waxed canvas from Big Duck is so amazing to sew with! I have an affiliate link with them over on Sewspire.com if you'd like to place an order in the future and make yourself a similar bag.
I am a beginner. Do you use a special foot with an edge to get a straight line when you stitch? You look like you are effortlessly constructing this bag lol. I use painters tape on my sewing machine to keep my fabric aligned and still mine do not look consistent. Thanks a lot. This was so great to watch.
Hi Katie, When I first started sewing I did have an edging foot. Now it's second nature. Just keep practicing and eventually you become one with the machine. Glad you like the tutorials! Head on over to Sewspire.com for lots more!
Really enjoyed your tutorial! That flap would be a great place to feature some machine embroidery or a monogram. I have never sewed with waxed canvas before - it would be helpful to know what size / type of needle, thread, and foot you used. Thanks!
I used the lighter weight canvas. Can't remember for sure; but, I feel like it was 12 oz. Does that sound right? It moved through my machine no problem.
Hello Dee! Use, 12" x 12" as your body panel measurements and 12" x 5" as your side panel measurements and 12" x 18" as your pocket panels and 10" x 10" as your flap.
Hi Andrea! At first..many greetings from germany ;-) This messenger bag is absolut gorgeous! It will be my next sewing project ;-) Today I´ve finished the Commuter Tote Bag from your last weeks tutorial and it turned out really great :-) I choose faux leather for the exterior and cotton fabric for the lining. I will show you a photo on facebook. I hope you and your family will have a nice weekend :-) Happy sewing - Monika -
@@Sewspire Thanks I cant wait to make it. I love the look of it and already have a bunch of waxed canvas to make gifts for my friends. Wondering if you use a 1/4" seam allowance?
It seems that for BigDuck sales are a secondary process, so _All Hail The Cookies!_ Oh well, maybe their competitors will let us opt out of that nonsense. Let’s find out.
I absolutely positively LOVE this bag too!

Thank you Janette! You are so kind!
I have been searching and searching for a tutorial for a bag exactly like this for so long! Thank you so much!
Yay! That makes me so happy! I absolutely love the look of the waxed canvas. Let us know how your bag turns out.
Fantastic bag! I’m so gonna make it! I’ve just ordered the material!
Thank you for a wonderful tutorial!
Lesley from the UK
That's awesome Lesley! You are going to love working with this waxed canvas!

This will be perfect for your Eagle Scout! Congrats to you and your son as that is quite an accomplishment!
Sewspire Thanks. They say on the back of every Eagle Scout is a mothers footprint. :-)
Yes it is the nicest bag ever. Great job and tutorial. Thank you again.
Another great tutorial! I have never worked with waxed canvas before. Hopefully sometime in the near future. Thank you for sharing!

Yay! So excited for you. I still use mine all the time.
Thank you again for a brilliant video xx
i love the bag & the canvas!
Me too!
Very pretty!
Great bag!
Glad you like it Teri!
Hi Andrea! What a beautiful bag! Do you remember which weight of waxed Canvas you used? I went on the website and there seems to be quite a few choices and wanted to know which weights of canvas I should be purchasing? Thank you so much!
Great question! I ordered the 15 oz in Nutmeg.
I am in love!again you are amazing!
Thank you Donna! You are pretty fabulous yourself!

The waxed cloth is awesome and I sew on a Janome DC2012 which is a standard home machine. It moves through the layers of waxed canvas with ease.
Very nice bag, Andrea. I want to make a masculine version for my son for college. What do you think of attaching the shoulder strap with D rings and using a metal buckle with a slider bar to make the strap length adjustable?
That will be very nice! The waxed canvas is a fabulous choice for men!
Hey Folks! Big Duck Canvas is out of the color she recommends until late September.
Love the bag and will give it a try. Can you use faux spade fabric
I am not familiar with faux spade...please tell me more.

I love this bag. Great pattern. What size needle are you using? Jean needle? What seam allowance? Can a regular sewing machine sew through the this ?
I use a 90/14 needle and my regular Janome DC2012 cruises right through all the layers no problem.
Love this ❤️

Glad you liked the tutorial! I use a walking foot with a 90/14 needle and Gutermann Cotton Thread.
@@Sewspire good to know this. Also, what weight of waxed canvas... the web site sold more than 1 weight of waxed canvas. many thanks!
Awesome!
Love it!
So glad you like it! I really love my new bag!
Is it possible to use a french seam on a bag like this rather than binding the raw edges or adding a liner?
If you have a heavy duty machine that can handle all of those layers the french seam is an option.
Thank you.
HI Sewspire Do you think this would work with regular canvas?
Absolutely!
@@Sewspire awesome thanks!
What weight canvas did you use for the project and can domestic machines handle heavier canvas than what you used? Thank you.
I used the lighter weight canvas. Can't remember for sure; but, I feel like it was 12 oz. Does that sound right? It moved through my machine no problem.
How would you recommend making this a tad smaller? I just love this bag. Ty so much. I’m so excited to get this very same color. :)
Hello Dee! Use, 12" x 12" as your body panel measurements and 12" x 5" as your side panel measurements and 12" x 18" as your pocket panels and 10" x 10" as your flap.
Sewspire ty, I am so excited to try this. Using it for work. I have a surface, so this should be perfect.

Your commuter tote sounds amazing! I will be on the lookout for the facebook post. Hoping you have a great weekend too!
Awesome
Hi, what size machine needle did you use? Thankyou
Thank you
Did you use a Universal needle? or a titanium? or microtex? Thanks! pat
do you need to overcast the edges of both material first before sewing??
I don't and have had no issues.
@@Sewspire Thanks I cant wait to make it. I love the look of it and already have a bunch of waxed canvas to make gifts for my friends. Wondering if you use a 1/4" seam allowance?
Looks great! What thread and needle did you use?
I use a 90/14 needle and the Gutermann cotton thread.
Sewspire thanks! That’s probably a denim needle?
John Broyles yep!
I loved kisses for Portugal 🇵🇹
