    Rich in nutrients and oils, avocados became the superfood of dieters, sports stars and trendy eateries in the last decade. Being high in demand has meant the price has skyrocketed and that has spelt quick money for criminals cashing in on increasingly easy access to what some now call “green gold”. With ready markets in towns and cities, it’s in avo farming heartland where large-scale looting originates. Carte Blanche travels to Tzaneen in the Limpopo province where virtually every farmer has been affected and we meet the small but savvy army of private security and their bloodhounds that are taking the fight to the green gold grabbers.

      Absolutely my brother. Including livestock farming. People are increasingly getting discouraged of livestock farming due to theft etc. Thus, this has pushed meat prices high particuly red meat.

    Market stalls are not the problem. If the grocery stores could compete with the markets at a price point there'd be no market for the stall sellers. The resulting spread seems to be compensatory in some ways and beneficial to consumers

    The problem comes down to the ANC, keeping everyone in poverty.

    • @adnel4142
      @adnel4142 3 роки тому +1

      NO, NO NO.
      The ANC cannot keep anyone in poverty if everyone uses initiative and starts providing for themselves. That free stand given to you is a home and business opportunity. The community must stand together and work together. We plant an avo tree in my yard and on the side walk. Under the tree you plant vegetables. The neighbors plant a macadamia tree and other vegetables. The neighbors after them lemon trees and more vegetables. I give you 5 lemons, you give me 5 avos . I give you carrots, you give me cabbage. Everything that we don't eat, dry or swop we sell. We have food, a job and an income.

    As usual Carte Blanche is lazy/biased in its approach and dubious in its intent. Do a proper investigation or leave it. You cast aspersions on micro traders, generalize and tarnish their reputation. Meanwhile the syndicates and ring leaders are given a free pass. Why didn’t you visit the security company that steals bakkie loads? Most large scale crimes are controlled by a hierarchy. The Mexican scenario is a clue. You’d rather bother subsistence traders on the roadside while driving back to Jhb. No real concern for getting to the core of the story. No care what damage you do to the reputation of street vendors. I won’t be surprised if your trip was paid for by the avo association or big retailers who want to keep shoving absurd prices down our throats.
    Unfortunately your approach is not isolated to this story. I’ve seen a pattern. I hope your viewers discern more.

    • @adnel4142
      @adnel4142 3 роки тому

      Please clarify the inequality statement.
      Anyone can own an avo or other tree. They just have to plant it. Everyone can be a businessman by selling veggies or fruit from their home garden. It is time we stop making excuses and start helping ourselves by accepting that what we get out is directly proportional to what we put in.

    So someone must design a hand held Lazer etching tool that is very cheap to manufacture and easy to use. Employ local workers and go etch the farm Name or a code on the skin of the Avo. Caught with those Avos without a receipt, nail them. Just the ones in arms reach. Yes, one day they'll start chopping down branches or trees, but by then the deterrent will have slowed theft down and farmers will have more money for FLIR cameras etc.

      There are two sides to every coin. The farmer has to buy the land, borrow the money, carry any losses and run the business. The workers get paid whether the harvest is a flop or not. They do not physically pay back the loans, or put their money in and run the risks. I am 100% behind the principle that those that work the land must make the income off the land. I also beleive that if the harvest is a flop the must carry the burden too. You cannot just have the good.
