In Hartbeespoort, Gauteng millions of tiny insects are hard at work, eradicating the water hyacinth suffocating the dam. It’s an invasive South American weed that, when left to bloom, depletes the oxygen in the water, killing fish and preventing boats from using the dam. For years, the Madibeng Local Municipality has tried unsuccessfully to eliminate the weed, but it always grows back. Now, scientists have introduced water hyacinth planthoppers: host-specific natural enemies of water hyacinth. But this new attempt to kill off the weed hasn’t been without controversy.

double its size every 2 weeks? exponential? Hmm... DOUBT.
You likely mean every two weeks it grows back to the same levels it was before they removed half of it. Exponential doubling every two weeks would have long had that hyacinth reach the moon and back!
Another question, what happens when there is no more hyacinth? The insects will just die off?

Why is mechanical removal controversial? Physical removal is the only way of removing the nitrogen. The bugs don't remove the nitrogen. Huge scale compost plants could be feasible? They can mix the compost with other sources to lower the heavy metal content.

The hyacinths are an excellent animal and ostrich food. Animals in drought areas are dying of hunger and thirst. Carotenoids in flowers. Herbicides killed the plants...then the toxic mix sank to the bottom...fish died by the millions, the clear water was no longer filtered by the roots...
WE LIVED AT HARTEBEESPOORT DAM AT THAT TIME..changed from fishing paradise to a large developement around a sewerage system.
NB..what will the hoppers eat when the hyacinths are gone?
Pelindaba Uranium plant also contributed to massive multiplication of algae..witnesses reports...plus Jukskei river pollution from surrounding settlements.

Early yesterday morning I watched a Carte Blanche video showing how the anc collapsed the Knysna municipality.
This morning I learned that the anc is a MAJOR contributor to the destruction of the Haarties dam.
Seems like, wherever the anc goes, in some shape or form destruction follows down its path.

Megamelus was introduced to South Africa in 2013. Other insects have been around since the 70s and they contribute to the reduction of the water hyacinth as well. Because of how heavily the plants were sprayed historically the insects could not survive in high enough numbers to damage the plants. Now, between mass rearing and the cessation of spraying the insects are having an impact. The records do exist.

The hopper is not the only insect that feeds on hyacinth. I have tried a weevil and a moth as biocontrol agents. Both unsuccessful. Maybe with the breeding programme in place, the hopper will be more successful.

The problem starts with the law. The law should state that no house should be built less than 100 m from rivers. I believe there was a rule like that many years back. Now they built houses and estates on islands in rivers below flood levels etc. although environmental impact studies had been done obviously with money under the table. Things done wrong will never get right. The pollution of the Rhine river was such an example. Maybe we should learn what they have done.

@Carteblance, can this solution also be viable for the Vaal River system as this is also now becoming an issue in the Vaal River system.

Before pointing fingers, we must first start at the root of the problem and first address the real cause of this is because someone liked an exotic plant, they’re to blame for this

I did research with hyacinth and Pekin ducks. The ducks refuse to eat anything else. I had to protect the hyacinth from the ducks, but I couldn't. The ducks find a way around, through, under, over, every barrier. They completely finished the hyacinth. Here's the solution: floating Pekin duck farms.

Dredging that soil like the Aztecs, maya and inca did wil give you thee best fertilised soil for growing. Build a little island in the middle with that to farm food for all the houses. Do that and you help the environment.

Turn the hyacinth into a crop. I hope that those bugs don't eat other plants when hyacinth is gone.

The plant that is the focus of this video is the common water hyacinth (pontederia crassipes), native to South America. The hyacinth that you can buy in shops and nurseries is hyacinthus orientalis, which is native to the eastern Mediterranean, and is a different plant altogether. It does not grow on top of water and is not invasive

We can make Natural Gas,Biofuel,Charcoal but all of the above will definitely annoy the Oil Barons. We can also use it as Animal feed and Fertilizer if it's not contaminated but again that could be competing with established markets.

You can have purified water, or a dead ecosystem, but you cant have both, not in Harties case anyway.
