I really can’t picture how much skill you gotta have to play it by ear.
id imagine you need a few years of experience, im fairly new to guitar and cant even get close to learning a song by ear
@MapBot for real! if you know your instrument, chances are you can improvise to a song like this that stays in the same key throughout. love his ad-lib guitar shreds. i do this kinda thing with piano- not because im great at music but i know my scales.
i managed to learn the melody by ear as my first guitar piece, tbf tho its not a hard melody
In general yes it takes a lot of skill, and toxic is an amazing player, but for the main riff of a song like this it’s very easy to figure out. The first chord is an open E (used in damn near every rock/metal song), which is the easiest chord to play, and usually the first one everyone learns. From there you just hit two power chords on the next two strings up. Most power chords can be figured out pretty easily by just trying out different positions on the neck while playing along. The real difficulty is being able to keep excessive noise from ringing out, and obviously, building up the endurance to play something uptempo like this.

0:48 I want to learn how to achieve that sorta "sustained ringing" effect that's used here. Any idea what it's called or how I can learn it?
What i'm doing there is playing a chord with my fretting hand but I'm picking each note of the chord one string at a time and making sure to not let go of the chord with my fretting hand so they can ring out into eachother. I do it all the time cause it's so fun and it sounds awesome.
