I'm pretty sure if Southgate stopped picking him for England he would push for a move out. So Maguire knows he doesn't have to play first team club football, can relax with the high salary he's on at United and gets called up for the national team. So it's a win-win situation for Maguire and in this way Southgate is indirectly contributing to the circus at United as well.

The problem with Southgate is that getting us to a final made him bulletproof despite that final being the best example of why he's not good enough. Yes, getting to a final is more than most of his predecessors have done, having got us there he completely failed to manage the game. He wasn't able to convert a half of dominance into more than a single goal lead, and he was painfully slow to react when Italy took control of the game in the second half.

Southgate is responsible for Maguire becoming the most reviled player in English history, Southgate is the bully in putting this player into the lion's den (pardon the pun) when the odds of calamity seem to shorten by his mere presence on the pitch alone. This situation now seems to smack of some psychological turmoil related to Southgate's own public humiliation and history as a player. Like he's using Maguire as some kind of healing factor in his own psyche whereby he imagines Maguire somehow at some point taking a winning penalty in a final and healing Southgate's personal soon to be 28 years of hurt from Euro 96.

Southgate's never had tactical nous or in-game management, but he was always good at positivity and sensible comments to the media - even this is slipping now. Maguire should not be close to the England team, and for him to defend him when his reward was an own goal kinda proves that his "haters" were right

I'm starting to agree with you after standing by Southgate for so long because of how he is favouring players like Maguire. His player selection is very questionable at times and if he is willing to fall on his sword for a player like Maguire so be it, let the FA get rid of him and bring in a manager whose loyalty is to the fans first. It's his job to protect his players but sentimentality shouldn't cloud his judgement and interfere with his decision making. If he can't see that Maguire is not good for England then perhaps we do need a new manager, unfortunately who do we get? We don't have anyone decent available, maybe a foreign manager again?

It is a major missed opportunity and the coach should have been fired after the Euro's. If you go back to the game against France...he just did not know what to do when France was ahead and he just watched the game slipping away. Abosultely no imagination and creativity. Contrast that to how the French Manager took off Giroud in the Finals when that line up was clearly not working. What happened? France came alive and from thereon could have won the game against Argentina. Southgate lack the vision on how to use his squad when things abd not rolling. He is afraid to think out the box, takes risk and perhaps create greater opportunities. If he is not sack England will miss this opportunity to win a major trophy. For the records....I am not British. I am Jamaican...using cheering for Brazil...but I can clearly see that England has the deepest and most talented squad than all the other Nations...and even much better than any other English team for decades.

He read the game well, great on the ball, good interceptions, good tackling, great heading and excellent passing. Today he seem a little slower than he used to be and is less comfortable when playing in formations other than a low block. He is not the same player. He was fantastic but is now past his best and limited to the low block. Not suitable for Man Utd or England. Ironically West Ham would have suited him and he probably would have played well in that team. Must not play for England.
