Brompton Continental Urban Long Term Update

- We were reminded this week that we owe an update on the 16 inch Continental Contact Urban tyre which was created by Continmetal specifically for use on the Brompton folding bike - thank you David
We installed a pair of Continental tyres AND inner tubes on the 05 April 2020 so just short of a year. (now it's March 2021)
Since then these Continental Tyres and the Brompton to which they have been fitted have done (according to Strava) 1,400 in or miles / kilometres 869 miles
This is less than would have been done if commuting were allowed!
This has included some long rides around London and the Home Counties - including riding over broken glass (that we didn’t see - just heard the crunch of glass)
The video shows how they look new compared with after almost a year and approaching 1000 miles
They are easy to fit
Weight compared to other Brompton tyres:
Tyre weights
==========
Conti weighs 275 g
Marathon weighs 420 g
Marathon plus weighs 480 g
Marathon racer 300 g
Folding Kojak 185 g
Wired Kojak 175 g
Tyre Pressure range
================
Conti - 65 - 116 psi (4.5 - 8 bar)
Marathon 65 psi - 110 psi (4.5 - 7.5 bar)
Marathon plus - 65 psi - 110 psi (4.5 - 7.5 bar)
Marathon racer - 65 psi - 110 psi (4.5 - 7.5 bar)
Schwalbe one tan wall - 65-110 (4.5 -100)
Folding kojak - 70 -115 psi
Wired kojak - 70 -115 psi (5 -8 bar)
Bought the Continental Urban Contact after your review last spring. Due to Covid-19 only 1500km on them so far. No puncture although really heavy glas load on the roads here. Very comfortable tires when used with medium pressure and decent grip on wet and sandy surfaces. Best all round tire for the brompton in my opinion. Many thanks go to you for introducing them last year 👍🏻🚴🏻♂️🌈😷🇬🇧
Thanks for your comment - and sharing your experience
We agree - they roll nicely and have good protection (for us at least)
I‘ve ordered the Conti Contact Urban in June 2020, for the ridiculous price of 14.95 €. So far, they‘ve been perfect: No puncture and not much wear, and they don’t feel less grippy than the Schwalbe Marathon I used before. But even less kilometers than you had (only used the Brompton for grocery shopping since Covid started).
By the way, ‚Schwalbe‘ is pronounced ‚shwullbeh‘ - like the ‚u’ in ‚skull’ and with a short ‚e‘ at the end. Hope this makes sense. 😉
Could you do a video about different saddles for the Brompton
I love her so much !!! More power to the channel !
Thank you so much the comment and for watching! 😀😃😄
Good vid. Hoping for a Conti to bring out some Gatorskins for the Brompton. Have long given up on Kojaks, and run Marathon racers on my S6L for years (5k miles pa without a puncture in city riding) and they're on my eM6L. I'm not expecting great things from the Ones on my Chpt3 when that starts seeing use when the weather dries/warms.
Small point of order - tread and grip aren't necessarily the same thing; tread is primarily for water dispersion. Grip is largely a function of compound and contact area generating friction. In theory the Conti should be a bit grippier in the dry than the Marathons, but worse in the wet due to less water dispersion due to less tread, assuming equally sticky compound.
In reality, the low centre of gravity and moment of inertia on a Brompton (plus the fact you're rarely riding it hard enough) should mean you'd never notice grip difference like you might on a 700c roadbike.
Thanks for all these informative videos, as a new to Brompton rider, they’ve been dead handy over the last year. Excellent service from your business as well. Thanks from a happy viewer and customer.
Thank you for watching, the feedback and for choosing us. We really do appreciate it.
Switched from marathon plus in the rear -> continental urban yesterday; a great choice. The level of comfort and rolling resistance have significantly improved at identical pressures. Also swapped the inner tube AV4->SV4 as presta valve is preferable. The $80 spent has been a worthwhile move. (Should have done it sooner) thank you to the lady at Brilliant bikes for introducing the upgrade. Planning to make a change at the front end too (marathon -> conti).
Very well presented video, love the humour. I often cycle past your Sunnindale shop, but not on my Brompton.
Nice and fair review. I installed mine about the same time, and fell in love with my Brompton again. Before that, I had heavy Schwalbe Marathon Plus ,which are not only heavy, but also have a lot of rolling resistance. The Contis make the Brompton sooooo faster!
Many thanks for watching! So glad they made you fall back in love with the Brompton! We have so far found them great!
Great to hear that! What psi do you have them pumped up to?
I have found these tyres really good. To me, they make the bike feel more solid and you get a lot less vibration on country roads.
We agree we have found they roll really nicely and so far no punctures! Thanks for watching
BRILLIANT as usual and long overdue review, which I guess is a reflection of the times. I didn’t realise one of the consequences of Brexit would be that hills would become easier! Impressed with the apparent resilience of the Continentals and if the performance is comparable to the Schwalbe they’ve got to be worth a punt, perhaps with the tubalito inner tube, in the eternal pursuit of puncture-free riding... The tan walls though... still love those on looks alone. And ahh, Kodak memories: “Who loves ya baby?”! Thanks for another valuable addition to the knowledge pool 👍🌟 Stay Safe
The jury is still out on the tubolito.....
Just love the end of the video, greetings from Portugal :)
Thank you and thank you for watching!
Thank you lovely Ms Brilliant, my biggest brompton bike fears is getting a puncture so will change my pre-fitted tyres soon 😎
Thanks for watching and the comment! It was my biggest fear too, then I leant it’s really not that hard to change a puncture. We have videos on changing and it made my commute much less stressful!
"I take them to places that they probably shouldn't go" - don't we all? I was following my Garmin sat-nav a couple of weeks ago and the road became a track, then a bridle path, then 2" deep churned mud LOL. I had to carry my Brommie about a mile before the trail improved again.
Many thanks for you comment and thanks for watching!
Nice review. Just a small thing, but the conti doesn’t have less “grip” than the marathon plus. The grip is achieved from the rubber part of the tyre in contact with the road. In dry conditions a completely slick tyre will have more grip than a tyre with tread. What you are referring to is the amount of tread on the tyre, not grip. In wet conditions or a bit off road, a tyre with zero tread like the Kokak might be likely to slip as there is no water or dirt channelling. So some tread is needed. The Conti looks to have an ideal amount of tread, - giving plenty of smooth slick rubber for great grip and low rolling resistance in the dry and also enough tread pattern for wet conditions to channel water for road use. The scwalbe tyres have a bit too much tread for my liking for road conditions - compromising rolling resistance a bit in the dry, although they are good in the wet and off road.
I was recently on the Schwalbe website looking for information on a particular tyre. There was a "FAQ" about tread grip and other tyre related stuff. From the horse's ( Shwalbe's) mouth:
What does the tire tread do?
On a normal, smooth road, the tread has only limited influence on the riding properties. The grip generated by the tire on the road is almost exclusively the result of the rubber compound.
Unlike a car, a bicycle will not aquaplane. The contact area is much smaller and the contact pressure is much higher. The floating effect of aquaplaning could only theoretically be achieved on a bicycle ridden at speeds over 200 km/h.
Off road though, the tread is very important. In this situation the tread establishes an interlocking cog-like connection with the ground and enables the transmission of all driving, braking and steering forces. On rough or dirty roads, the tread can also contribute to better control.
Why ride a slick tire?
On a normal, smooth road, even in wet conditions, a slick tire actually provides better grip than a tire with a tread, because the contact area is larger.
The situation is much different on a rough road and even worse on a dirt trail. In these cases the degree of control provided by a slick tire is extremely limited.
Why are so many treads direction dependant?
In the case of a road tire the rolling direction is mainly important for aesthetic considerations. Tires marked with arrows simply look more dynamic..
Off road, the rolling direction is far more important, as the tread ensures optimumconnection between the tire and the ground. The rear wheel transmits the driving force and the front wheel transmits the braking and steering forces. Driving and braking forces operate in different directions. That is why certain tires are fitted in opposite rotating directions when used as front and rear tires.
There are also treads without a specified rotating direction.
Interesting. I’ve only just learnt that lots of tread doesn’t necessarily mean more grip. Are the marathon plus tyres better in the wet or is there not much difference?
I've always used Continental City Ride on my bike. 26x1.75. Much easier on the body than road racer tires. Very satisfied customer.
Thanks really helpful video. I’m about to install a pair of these tyres on both mine and my wife’s Brompton 🤞
Thanks for watching! Glad it helped we do really like them!
Great to know we have one more option for Brompton Tires.
I've just change to Marathon Plus on the rear tire and Marathons in the front tires. Love them, but they are much heavier.
Great editing and sound quality(I'm still having problems with my video sound).
Congrats, and thank you for the video.
It's good to see you have thought about the different needs of the front and rear tyres, everyone should.
@@rogerhudson2814 Hi Roger, I also use diferent PSI.
90 to 100psi on the rear tire and 80psi on front tire to ride in the city in sunny days 👍🏻🌞
I had the Marathon Plus on the rear as well for the ultimate in puncture protection. I rode over pretty much everything without much worry at all.
@@bboystretch7788 It's very good to ride without worries.
Love my Marathons, but I have Continentals GatorSkin in my road Bike, and they are very good also 😊
Add a Tanus Armur to a brompton and make a review about it or what is the best combination of tire and inner tube with Tanus Armur for best protection and best speed ! We need that extra peace of mind!
Consider making that video ❤
thank you..on the last of my stash of bromptons old yellow flash so I needed a vid like this 🤗
I gave you a thump up because i think you make good points and u are funny but I would like to see that bike Brompton washed.
Thanks for watching and the comment - she also wants a wash! Next in the list!
Good review on the Urbans 👍👍👍👍👍
Many thanks, we really like them!
Nice video...i love your helmet and Brompton colors match....very nice and fashionable.
Thank you for the comment and for watching 😀😀
I always liked Continental tyres when I rode 70c - but never really compared tgem to anything. I'll definitely fit contis to the Brompton as soon as the original Marathons wear out.
I must say though that any decent road tyre ought to perform perfectly well on an unmade track (I don't mean 'off road' or mud when I say that, BTW).
We have been kind on impressed with them and they ride nicely!
Thanks for watching!
Just ordered a set of tan wall continental from brilliant bikes 👍
Thank you and thank you for watching!
You should show tread wear on the REAR tire as thats the one that takes most of the weight and therefore wear and tear.
Thanks. I tried them They rolled well but I found the side walls were too flimsy and I ended up with punctures. I’ve therefore returned to Marathons. Thanks as always for your films. Always excellent.
Hello. You mean compared to marathon plus or to marathon?
@@Alex-tv3qo marathons. I was really disappointed as they roll well.
Thank You. Your review helped me decide. Just to add on, you have the E25 version which there is a stronger version E50.
We have not tried the E50 yet, so can’t comment on the difference, sorry.
So informative! Thank you!
Thank you for watching and commenting 😊
Nice review, thanks.
Is that reflective strip on the side? Looks like there no such thing on the brown wall version.
I had a pair of these of the early batches (not the earliest ones distributed in the official events, but the ones that are purchasble from retailers). Unfortunately one of them seemed to be defective, the sidewall worn out within a few hundred kms. However, the other one remained fine.
That’s a shame! We have found them great!
Ah, You are able to get some holders fitting the bolt on top of the stem, for many equipment items! I can see that Yours are on both sides of the stem.
That is a really girlie saddle you have there!!
Thanks! It’s very comfortable and it matches my grips 😀
@@brilliantbikes what saddle do you have? Thanks!
And here's me thinking you would have had your compact attached to your handle bars ! Keep Safe!!
I am74 years old 6ft 6ins tall & weigh 17 stone, so no lightweight. I recently bought a Brompton E-bike h6l black. I really like it but I am having difficulty getting really comfortable with the seat. You have asked if we would like some more vids. Well a brompton E bike is not like a road bike & the usual saddle & post height & set up vids are not quite the same. So I would like some suggestions on the best way to set up my Brompton for comfort please. As it is, I have a job getting off it because the rear end is usually rather sore after 19 miles. Even if you can direct me to the best video for set up would help. Thanks
Thanks for watching and for the suggestion. Let’s see what we can do
I think I must be unlucky.
Been using Conti's for about 7 months and have had 3 punctures so far.
The 4th was actually an innertube failure at the base of the Schwalbe innertube valve.
Oh no! That’s a pain! Was it the wired or folding version?
@@brilliantbikes They're the wired type (part number 0150356)
there is a new Continental contact urban Tan Wall Folding tyre. 349
Yes there is! We will do a comparison soon!
Thanks for watching!
Enjoy your informative videos! I would like to know what mount you using for your phone. I heard you briefly mention it but didn't get a name....thanks!
Brompton pub reviews with Bromptons.
Do you use any tire sealant? Such as "Slime" brand etc? I was using Marathon Plus but I just learned that their rolling resistance is very high compared to the tire that you are reviewing here, so I would like to use a tire here that offers the 1/3 lower rolling resistance, and slime to stop getting punctures.
Thank you for the good information in the video. I think, I change the tyre type if it is necessary. In your video I have seen that you doesn't use the original pedals. We called that "bear paw" in Germany, I use the Japanese MKS Ezy Sylvan Touring changeable pedals on my Brompton and on my Moulton AM. Maybe you can compare the other options than Brompton pedals in a video? Or is there a video in your archive? Thank you.
That’s a great idea! Let us knowing there are any you’d really like to see.
Thanks for watching!
Great video!
Does it feel like there is less rolling resistance on the Contacts than the Standard Marathon tires?
Many thanks for the question. Yes we were thinking of trying to add this to the video - maybe the next one. They roll really nicely, we have been impressed. We also want to do a breaking text as they seem to grip well.
@@brilliantbikes could that be a ‘braking test’ ? 😂
Thank you so much for the video as well as the name check :-) It looks like another outing for my wallet.
BTW who on earth could possibly give this video a thumbs down ??
I've think that I've managed to solve the mystery of the "solitary thumbs" down vote.
Apparently it was a Herr Schwable from Germany :-)
@@davidburgess5419
HaHa - excellent 👍
Have you seen the black folding version of the tyre that Brompton are now listing? Looks like it is lighter again.
Yes they are just arrived 😀. Video coming soon.
Thank you for watching and for the question.
Great video,.i like your helmet. May i ask, where can i buy this orange helmet? thank you.
Thanks so much for watching. It’s a POC helmet.
Love the accent. 🚴♂️
Thanks for watching!
Hello, yesterday cleaned and regreased the front and rear wheel bearings as they both had slight play on them, the problem I had was pumping the pressure up to 80 + psi I have a track pump (which does leak slightly )Iam just weak lol any help appreciated ,neil
We also find it hard to get that pressure without using a track pump
I’d like to know why you use what look like crank brothers pedals and what it means for transporting your Brompton.
Thanks for watching and paying such close attention
They are crank brothers double shot pedals
one side is a flat pedal with pins designed to take chunks out of your shins - after all "How to be a mountain biker" states that "there should be more scars on your shins than stars in the sky" - so perfect for wearing with 5:10 flat MTB shoes which also work for casual
the other side use a crank brothers cleat - so you can be clipped in - and for cold weather these work well with boots to help keep those toes toasty!
Regarding transporting - they are quite small pedals - it doesn't make too much difference (when flying though the left hand pedal has to be removed to fit the bike in a box)
890 miles in a year, not very much. Flippin eck i need to get my act in gear.
I like your saddle.
Brand name?
Many thanks for the question, they are Ergon saddles, this one is a ladies in Berry
Tremendous videos with great instructions to follow etc but does sound, like a robot talking !!
looks like your wheel bearings need maint. they did not spin freely when you spun the tire with your hand.
Does it matter what type inner tube are used with the continental urban? i.e Must I get a continental inner tube? - thanks 🙏🏾
Thanks for watching - and a great question
Originally we fitted them with the Continental Compact 16 - the tube designed to go with the tyre
Positive of the Conti tube:
they have a slightly shorter valve - so slightly easier to attach a pump
they have the same nice orange packaging ;-)
Negative:
they are fatter than our favourite Schwalbe AV4 inner tubes / the current Brompton Impac inner tube
Your current / favourite tube will work basically
I got Continental tires fitted with standard Brompton tubes so I suppose they don't require any special one.
@@brilliantbikes thank you * for going through the trouble of making all these great videos, definitely helpful, and thanks for the prompt reply !
Crazy that you can accidentally run over glass where you live...where I live you are forced to cycle over glass everywhere!
Over here you are constantly cycling around paper clips, bolts, screws, nails, truck tire steel cords, whole pieces of cars, bricks and every kind of construction material you can think of, potholes the size of a whole bike and as deep as a water well.
Drunk scumbag breaking glass bottles on the cycling paths on purpose is just a everyday thing. I think only some place where people planted landmines would be worse for cycling lmao
