I used to be in Zone 8a but we're now 8b on the updated hardiness zone map. So, I can keep my Cannas and Irises in the ground during the winter, thank goodness! haha! But I did have to divide them and transplant a lot of them into other parts of the yard this year. They get overcrowded so fast! They're like bunnies when it comes to making babies! I now have a few paper bags with lots of Canna and Iris rhizomes that I just don't have any room for. I also like to give them away. I have a plant lady neighbor and we trade bulbs, rhizomes and other plants a lot...it's fun! She gave me a Crinum Lily that I have to keep away from animals because it's so toxic to dogs and cats. It's beautiful though! I call it my Murder Lily because even the pollen is very toxic. That's why I prefer Cannas. They won't poison dogs or cats. I'm sorry- I'm a babbler...haha! Your channel just popped up into my feed and I really enjoyed this video. New subscriber here :)
Enjoyed watching you getting all those tubers out. You’re a strong girl! I live in Nw Fl., don’t have to dig any up but I have them planted in pots. Just cut them down & if we have some frost just cover them up. Hope you’re feeling better! 0:06
Yes, I live in northern NJ, my canna lilies Were taken out end of October 2024, potted ones became bound in pot, the ones in ground took out a little early, but they were hard to get out. I couldn’t rip them out as you did, I had to use a serrated knife, everything is now separated and have rhizomes in brown paper bag in basement with peat moss. Some of mine are with green foliage and others with bronze foliage. When they dry out a little more I will take more soil off rhizomes. Next year they will only go in big pots above the ground. I also have some beautiful big spikes that I try to overwinter inside in my living room. I found you can only save for two years, then they split into two plants and very hard to overwinter in Northern NJ.
Great job at dividing/ cleaning and storing your cannas! They are super healthy... I am dreading the entire process of digging/ dividing and storing but it has to be done.
Have you tried growing elephant ears and canna in those cloth/canvas grow bags? I tried it this year, and my bulbs did better than ever before. I live in Maryland and I'm thinking I may leave them in the bags over the winter, but cover them with straw. What is your advice? Am I risking losing them?
I haven't done that before but I bet they'd grow really well as long as you keep them well watered. I'm not sure of your garden zone but if you experience hard freezes I'm not sure it will survive
Hi Iam from uk, just doing what your doing. Was trying to be really careful digging them up without damaging them, came to the conclusion impossible 😂, used a spade to break up main clump, then my hands. Thought about planting them up in pots till I saw that your just drying them, might copy you and hope they survive. Mine have grown like yours, from I bulb I've got loads, must be all the manure and plenty of water. Happy gardening !
WOWZAS!!! Those clumps are some serious business! I am getting ready to do some major cleaning today, just enjoying my coffee and catching up with my gardener friends on YT, I "might" try to save some cannas from today... When you check on them during the winter months, Do you spray them with a bit of water if needed?
Hi Roxana! Yes they are biggest and toughest cannas I've ever had haha! So I don't like to add in moisture during the winter. I've found that cannas aren't as sensitive as dahlia tubers over winter. If you find that yours are shriveling over winter it might be a good idea to add some moisture but I usually don't add anything
I live in zone 8 killeen texas. We had a hard freeze two years ago and lost some of my cannas. Will I have to cut my down and bring them in. Would love to have some of yours. please help.
This was a very lengthy video basically showing the same thing over and over. I would like to see how are you store them? Do you do anything other than put them in a brown paper bag?? 🤷🏼♀️
Do you have to dig up your Cannas where you live?
Nope. I'm on the Texas coast. We can dig up, divide, and replant cannas in the ground in fall.
No, I’ve never heard of it. I’m in Oklahoma. Very interesting, I might learn something.

That clump was a beautiful sight to behold ! 🍁🍂🍁💚🙃

I want a wagon/ cart like that. 🍁🍂🍁💚🙃
They are nice and pretty affordable
How do you store them over the winter--just loose in a paper bag, or do you add sawdust or peat moss or anything?
Hi! I store them loose in a paper bag like you said or I will have them out in a tray in my basement. Same results storing those two ways for me
@@TheThriftedPlanter Awesome, thank you! If they start to dry out part way thru the winter, do you mist them with water at all?
Great job at dividing/ cleaning and storing your cannas! They are super healthy... I am dreading the entire process of digging/ dividing and storing but it has to be done.
Thank you! It's a lot of work but it has to be done

Hi there! It’s so hard to not damage them when digging them up 🤣. Ooo I bet they are so happy with the manure!
Happy Gardening!
The struggle is real! 🍁🍂🍁💚🙃
Thanks Cutie. 🍁🍂🍁💚🙃

Do I need to cut back my cannas that are in pots?
I’m not sure if your aware of this or not but bushel baskets aren’t really made to plant it. There more for dry storage. 🍁🍂🍁💚🙃
Yes, but plants look so pretty in them
Sometimes those pots get brittle with age. 🍁🍂🍁💚🙃
Yes but can you separate these clumps and how to ?
Yes you can but you will have to break them apart
How long do u let the canna rhizines dry out for. 24 hours or 48 hours
I like for mine to dry out for at least three days or longer. I want to make sure they are dry enough that they won't rot over winter.
Did my Canna Lillies put you up to this? 😂😂 I really need to get it done
Yes and they said it's time to get them ready for winter hahaha!
🤣♥️
Why did you plant the cannas in pots instead of in the ground?
Hello, I thought they would be really pretty in pots and at the time I didn't want to make room for them in ground.
I store mine in a foam ice chest, will that help?
I've never tried that but In my mind those are holding in moisture. I don't have any experience with them.
Oh my goodness, I have never seen canna lilies that large. Did you buy a different variety or is it the fertilizer?
They are Canna Muscifolia and are supposed to be big. I do fertilize them really good too
I had to smash my canna pots with a hammer to get them out. ☺️
OMG!!!
Hello, what state do you live in? Your plants are beautiful
Thank you! Ohio
❤❤
I have 4 varieties and lots of them if anyone wants a clump

Good Morning, I store them in a cool dry area. That is typically in my basement. Closets also work well. Have a great day!
💚
