- Hermeus has begun testing our proprietary precooler technology with the Pratt & Whitney F100 engine. This video highlights some of our favorite camera angles from testing.
What's a precooler and why are we testing it? The Hermeus precooler increases the max speed of the turbine engine by lowering the temperature of incoming air. This is the first major propulsion milestone for our next aircraft, Quarterhorse Mk 2, which will utilize this engine configuration and fly at supersonic speeds.
The precooler is part of our larger turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) engine. Our TBCC engine, named Chimera, is a full-range, air-breathing hypersonic engine combining a turbine with a ramjet. At low speeds Chimera operates in turbine mode with the F100 engine, while at higher speeds the engine transitions to ramjet mode. The precooler helps bridge the gap between these two modes of operations by increasing the performance of the turbine.

@@dlifedt You're right that hermeus is a moonshot project. Though I'd like to compare it to boeing's attempt or lack of attempt to innovate. Hermeus is one product away from being succesful and they have already gotten some defence contracts for hypersonic flights.
@@-yttrium-1187 I mean whether youre doing a moonshot or a small iteration, you have to have some accomplishments / credibility before you tout them. Just saying "I plan to revolutionize/save the world" doesn't inspire confidence in me, makes me wanna run.

Are there any similarities between this precooler tech and the british Skylon/SABRE precooler tech? (That Darpa tested several years ago)

Which F100 variant is this, -229 / -220? As a former Eagle Keeper, the sweet satisfaction knowing the beating heart of the airborne beast is breaking new ground is a truly beautiful thing.

The F100 is the same engine that powers the Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcons used by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds. It also powered the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle and F-15E Strike Eagle. A proven engine in every sense.

I thought Hermeus was using a newer version of the J85? Perhaps that was MK.1 and Mk.2 is switching to the F100? Either way, I am excited to see progress! Lets get a test-flight livestream in the books! ;)

Is the F100 just a test mule for your precooler, or will your final engine be a variant of the F100?
Both - they said that they started with the J85 because it's compact and much of the mechanical concepts are the same. They only stepped up to the F100 once they mastered the J85 because it has so many more electronic and mechatronic control systems to consider. This is what will be going in their Darkhorse demonstrator. I don't think they've determined what engine will go into their Halcyon passenger plane just yet.

What will the passenger experience be when this thing pitches or yaws in flight? If Hermeus must slow down before maneuvering to save passenger lives, how long will a comfortable deceleration take, and therefore what part of its flight profile will actually be hypersonic? Why will Hermeus be economically viable with fewer passengers and payload when Concord, when Concord could carry more passengers and payload ?

It would be great to have a narrative explaining why this test is important; otherwise it looks like a vanilla maintenance run of an F-100.

Hermeus have said nothing about aiming for space. There are dozens of companies working on that already (SpaceX, RocketLab, Blue Origin, Relativity, and Stoke to name a few).
Hermeus are all about fast flight strictly inside the atmosphere.

You do know that that engine is a 40 year old GE engine right? They made a precooler for it. Impressive but not nearly what you are suggesting.

Getting an "old" engine to do THIS reliably is not easy. And, how many other businesses, countries are succeeding even with even "old" tech? None. HOOAH. 🥂
@@mizake01 The F100 is still beyond most countries including Russia and China. It might be old for the US but nobody else has an engine like that except EuroJet and Snecma (France). Again, I'm not suggesting what they have done is not impressive, it just wasn't ground up.
