  • PVC can cause severe damage to coins, especially copper and silver coins and it is important for any coin collector to be able to test for the presence of PVC. In this video, the Beilstein test is explained and demonstrated on various plastics.
    Never be caught with slime on your coins again!

    Wow, this is a great video and even if it destroys the plastic a little, seems to be a sure fire way to know if something is really PVC free or not. Thank you!

    I have been watching videos on coins for a couple of years now, and have seen several talking about the dangers of PVC - you are the first that I have seen that did this test! Thank you so much for this!

    I have been buying coin storage sleeves, some of them don't say what they are made of, some of them say they have NO PVC - they were lying! I am now in the process of changing over to Polycarbonate Archive Quality. I am wiping each of my coins with Acetone before putting them in individual cardboard sleeves and then into the polycarbonate pages

      That's the way...You're doing it right! I find it rather amusing that some collectors will pay thousands for a solver coin, but scoff at the idea of paying say R10 for safe storage for said coin.

    There are some sets I have from the 1970s where it is unclear. My approach is if there is no sign of deterioration and no green tinge I leave them in there. The dilemma is that when you take them out of the packaging most UNC decimal coins are not worth anything whereas in the set they have some modest value

      That is my dilemma as well. Also, many of the coins in these sets turns out to be proof coins! In the set, the coins are part of the "unc set", out of it it is just another proof coin.

    Are the hobby master flips any good and if not can you recommend the brand that you use?

      They are made of mylar, so they should be fine. I don't have a particular brand - as long as it's mylar, I'm happy.

    Testing an old album - was that a Optima page? - and how old was it? - Cos I was looking at buyin the Optima page system.....they say they are acid and chemical free

      @penniesshillings  2 роки тому +1

      I cannot recall the name and make of the album (no writing on it either). I bought it many years ago and was told it was "safe". Obviously it was not... I cannot comment on the Optima pages, unfortunately. If I were you, I'd buy the album and test it. Not sure what you'd do if you detect PVC though.

      @@penniesshillings Thanks. I guess Ive gotta take the risk. They seem the top brand, so if they have PVC then we are all screwed :(
      Fingers crossed its not 60 quid down the drain

      Of course, only copper and silver coins are really affected. It also do take some time, so just monitor it as well. If you can store it in a drawer with a handful of those "don't eat" moisture absorbing things in there it will reduce the risk further.
