BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

In the first numbers round, I saw Ben's solution, and also had these:

1250 / 2 = 625

1875 / 3 = 625
5 - 2 = 3
625 - 3 = 622
In the second numbers round, I did virtually the same thing as Rachel, except I did 75 x 2 / 50 = 3, but I also had these more different solutions:
75 / 25 = 3
100 - 3 = 97
97 x 8 = 776
776 + 50 + 2 = 828
100 x 25 = 2500
2500 / 2 = 1250
1250 - 8 = 1242
1242 x 50 = 62100
62100 / 75 = 828
Since the four large numbers are all multiples of 25, you can use them to make ratios in addition to the more conventional smaller numbers like 2, 3 , or 4 (50 / 25, 75 / 25, and 100 / 25), so this took advantage of the fact that 50 and 75 are in a 2 : 3 ratio. Because of the rule that every step must be a whole number, there was no other option but to multiply across before dividing.
In the third numbers round, I saw both contestants' solutions and also had these:
10 x 6 = 60
60 + 50 = 110
9 - 3 = 6
110 x 6 = 660
50 + 10 = 60
6 / 3 = 2
9 + 2 = 11
60 x 11 = 660
50 x 9 = 450
450 / 6 = 75
75 - 9 = 66
66 x 10 = 660
50 x 9 = 450
450 - 10 = 440
440 x 9 = 3960
3960 / 6 = 660
Like the above second-round solution, these last two are based on the ratio of 3 : 2.
In the final round, I saw Ben's solution, but I also had these. First, the easiest was:
75 + 5 = 80
80 x 8 = 640
640 + 50 = 690
75 - 8 = 67
67 x 50 = 3350
3350 + 100 = 3450
3450 / 5 = 690 (you can also multiply by 5 and divide by 25 at this point, but it's the same thing)
And you can solve 690 even without the other number if one of the two is a 5, as follows:
100 / 25 = 4
50 - 4 = 46
75 x 46 = 3450
3450 / 5 = 690
'But the presence of the 8 means you can showboat with a solution that goes into 6 digits:
100 - 8 = 92
92 x 75 = 6900
6900 x 25 = 172500
172500 / 5 = 34500
34500 / 50 = 690
The idea behind this is the same as the third solution: 75 x 46 / 5 = 690. But 92 is twice 46, so it has to be brought down to 46 by 25 / 50 while the 75 / 5 reduces to 15. Hence why the interim number is 250 (50 x 5) times your target number.

To get 828, I did 100 * 8 = 800. 800 + 25 = 825, and then to make the 3, I did (75 * 2) ÷ 50, which really is just a small rearrangement of Rachel's method. I think people tend not to be used to using the big numbers to make smaller ones!

Another way for 827 is 8 x 100 = 800 + 25 + 2 = 827 + (75 - 50 = 25 divided by 25 = 1)
