  • For the twenty years of her widowhood, Gowri has wondered: what really happened on the last day of her husband's life.
The facts of his death are simple. But the sudden financial crisis that drove him to suicide remains mysterious.
"There were two officers. And I think the police also came. And I asked them, 'where is he? Where is my husband?' And they said he is under audit. Under investigation."
Jayakanthan ran a string of convenience stores. And he'd recently taken on a Post Office branch in west London. Suddenly, there was money missing from its accounts.

Sadly corporate crime is very rarely prosecuted in the UK. Nobody was ever prosecuted over Grenfell. News International was not prosecuted over phone hacking, despite the wealth of evidence. The UK has not prosecuted any corporation, or it's senior management, in 10 years. I doubt anybody involved in this scandal will be charged. They got away with it. Which is why the Fujitsu and post office management appear so smug at the enquiry. They know nothing will happen to them. Their income, savings and capital are safe.

The human cost of this scandal has been truly heartbreaking. Yes, you can financially compensate people (and even that isn't happening in many cases!) but how can you compensate people for time spent wrongfully imprisoned, or worse still, for lives lost....? We are a long, long way from true justice in this country!

If all these post masters stole money, e.g 180K, what did they do with the money. Does 180K show up in their bank accounts or have they made purchases that exceed their income? Surely this would have been part of the investigation? They are accused of stealing large amounts but there is no sign of it in their banks or lifestyles? What sort of investigation was conducted. A faulty one.

Yes, in many cases the falsely accused and convicted became penniless and homeless, some living in caravans. Were the phantom cash discrepancies shown in POL's annual accounts and claimed as tax deductions?

£180,000 shortfall! What was he running a branch of Harrod's? If I was doing an audit I would be questioning the Post Office (and Fujitsu) how much business does this small size post office conduct on an average day and how come could such a sizable deficit arise, the auditors are clearly guilty of failling to diligently check all of the figures. By signing off the accounts the auditors are grossly negligent in their duties.

It’s senior management, it’s culture, it’s lack of ethics, morality and humanity in dealing with the scandal by trying to hide and persecute and prosecute the innocent. Serious thought needs to be given to what Bates said in passing about selling it for a nominal fee into private hands so we don’t fund them and systematic review of the organisation can take place.

These people at the top of the post office are still dishing out punishment and still denying their abhorrant attack on the postal workers. This man didn't take his life until he was confronted with this unproven loss. This adds up to another victim of the post office. The post office should not be the one to decide on this case after the hounding and imprisonment of innocent workers. This case of a man taking his own life was caused by 25years of the post office, horizon, fijitsu, and the government covering up the truth.
