I have 2 summit viper sd’s and love them. The sit on bar is great for climbing and a gun rest but shooting anywhere to the right is almost impossible. It’s also a pain when bow hunting. I want to try the open shot but my buddy bought one and sold it right away because he said it was way to hard to climb without the bar and it was terrifying not having something around you while climbing. Idk I think it will take some learning but I want to have it be open in front of me so I can swing my weapon in all directions. Thanks for the vid. This clarified some things.

Thanks! I think with everything there is a learning curve. I’ve not felt unsafe yet not having a bar. Personal preference I guess.

Wrap the straps for the seat around the bar one time and it will raise the seat higher up on the viper and the shooting rail is no longer a problem....I can shoot from a seated position.

I think it's one of the best still in 2024 I have mine stealth striped with a hazmore seat an bow holder hooked it up to an xop carrying backpack and I easily take it miles into the woods for my hunts

I liked it. Trying out a mini viper this season.

@@changingseasonsoutdoors mini viper is gd 18 lbs I think I gave mine away I don't like the bar and you can't keep the seat cranked high enough to shoot over sitting down as I mainly bow hunt and I shoot sitting down with a chest draw it wasn't a practical stand for me

I flip my cushion to the inside to climb so it’s not rubbing the tree. I love mine. Took some time to learn how to climb with but as a bow only hunter I love it. Wished it would fit a little bigger tree though

Good tip! I’m sure I’ll learn a few tricks when I get some hours logged this fall! Good luck this season!

I have a Summit SD Sentry with flip up seat. Pretty much the same as the open shot except the seat style.I took it off and put a Hazmore net seat on it.

See, I actually like the regular straps over the bungie straps because the stand flops around on long walks. But this seems to be one of the lightest climbing stands out there, and saddles are outrageously expensive right now, so I think I’m going with the open shot. Thanks for this review.

I have the same stand. I use the Loan Wolf set strap to convert it to a set and climb stand. It make it way easier to climb with.

Very interesting. Isn’t it basically the Viper without the front rail? Wonder if you could just modify your standard climber and remove the bar?

I’d say it would be more like the viper mini as the inside frame seems a touch smaller. I wouldn’t trust myself to mod my old viper but essentially that is what they did with a smaller base.

I think the stirrups feel not so secure because of how close you have to have it to the tree. I adjusted mine back alittle, but you can only adjust so much to get your boot to fit. I would love to try something different but I'm not sure what. Let me know if you do any mods to them

I’m going to run it as is for a while but I may go to the old viper setup with straps across the boots.

What is the space like? Is there plenty of space to move around in the stand when your climbing or is it pretty tight

@@caseywilson5527 not going to lie, it’s a bit tight/compact but to be expected with lightweight stand

Is there a securement strap for the seat like there is for the viper?

I sold my summit sd and bought a saddle. i like the saddle but now considering the open shot. loved my sd just didnt like the huge footprint.

  • @KTMsoldier1988

There is no reason why this should be sold for more money then the viper SD. You don't get a full seat with backrest and it literally requires less material to produce. I have 2 viper Sd and was considering this but not for the cost.

I agree! They market it as being 15lbs which is probably the make up in cost since everyone wants lighter but in fact it is not. Decent stand though
