  • EUROPEAN RAILWAYS of the 1990s
Poznań Główny, (Poland PKP) on 17th March 1997
On a tour to see steam in action around Eastern Europe I planned a visit to Wolsztyn in Poland. A popular destination and a bit of a mecca for the steam enthusiast. With a selection and handful of steam locomotives operated by PKP (Polish State railways or Polskie Koleje Państwowe) on a couple of routes out of Wolsztyn. One to Poznań in particular and also to Leszno to the SE. After a lengthy overnight journey on the train from Brussels to Moscow we alighted at Poznań Główny (Station) While there we witnessed trains being hauled by the variant of BR's Class 83 the EU06 Class. Other classes of traction were EU07 (more common) EP08, EN57 and diesel classes SM42 and SU45. Of course we captured on film the departure to Wolsztyn hauled by Steam Locomotive Class OL49. It was like stepping back into the 1960s with a certain lack of this Health and Safety that we are subjected to today. ( I agree to most of it but it has gone well overboard nowadays). The sight and smell of the station was magnificent and general atmosphere. I really hope you relish in this time capsule that we were so fortunate to have observed while in this beautiful and friendly country.
I hope this series will appeal to the European enthusiast as well as the BR enthusiasts and again feel free to comment on any material or subscribe to the channel to help support it's growing popularity. It may not always be possible to answer every comment or question, especially if it is not in English, but every comment is read and greatly appreciated.

Very interesting video! Unfortunately in Poland we are experiencing the last years of „classic” rail. The EN57 EMU-s, SM42 loco and EU/EP07 loco will all be gone in the next few years, as well as passenger trains of the „TLK” category which consist of carriages that still have opening windows. Videos like yours are very precious. Greetings from Gdańsk :)

You are so welcome and so many thanks for watching and commenting...sad to see that PKP are going the same way as so many railways have gone....Best wishes to you...Mark

Now Poznań Main Station is horrible to film trains because the station building is located up to the railway tracks and is so dark here.

That is a big shame as Poznań is such an interesting location.....Many thanks and my best wishes to you......Mark

What an amazing capture of 'modern' steam working and with those dark double deck coaches, it could only be Eastern Europe. So good to see the rail enthusiast being able to sensibly find their pitch and get the best shots without being corralled by H&S zealots! I much prefer the European attitude to railways, both in stations and out in rural areas - It's a railway, if you trespass or muck about you'll get hurt - your fault!
