Pinterest' office space looks so inviting and collaborative! Definitely on my list of companies I want to work at. I love that there is art on the wall or featured at places....and not taken down. I built a Pacman art with a colleague at a large tech company before. After 2 months, we relocated to a new building (per company culture - they like to shift teams around), and our hardworking art was removed. It was sooooo pretty, too, and took hours to build. :(
Software development is a primarily individual activity. Working in constant noise and distraction results in shallow thought and shallow work. All of the science suggests that working under constant distraction can destroy your ability to do any kind of deep thinking. Go down that road and you can expect to become a shallow thinker if you are not already and you can expect to produce nothing but low-value work.
This office doesn't even afford employees their most basic fucking needs. It doesn't even have dividers and you have developers working from laptops? Fuck that.
