I love looking at the relationship dynamics between adults and children and the representation of children and childhood in children's books. I found it particularly interesting that in the Northern Lights, children's dæmons can change shape at will, which reflects their unsettled nature and potential. And once children grow up, their dæmons are fixed in a permanent shape and can no longer change-quite a view on childhood 😅 Also, the adults in the story want to separate children from their dæmons to suppress their will and to make them more obedient. I found your insights about the time period interesting, and I agree that it doesn't come across clearly. I also agree with you about the story being a bit preachy and pushing an agenda. Interestingly, once you notice this, you start seeing it in many children's books, which really makes you think. Can't wait to see what you think about the sequels. Thank you for this! Yes! I just finished The Subtle Knife a few days ago. I’m still collecting my thoughts but I think I liked it more than the first

Not as far as I’m aware. Though I’m fairly sure there’s travel to the parallel universes in the subsequent books
