Hong Konger here. Wanna point out a few things:
    1. The "new tuna" is actually a plant-based tuna. They had plant-based spam before, not sure if they still got it now.
    2. McDonald's in HK has never positioned itself as "fancy". In fact it is anything but. Locals go there for literally cheap "fast" food. Your video was taken during lunch hour and that area (Admiralty) is a dense commercial area. They are in a hurry and on a budget. They don't have many choices in that area.
    3. This branch is more like a showpiece. It was never meant to be expanded. If you ask the locals whether they think McD can be fancy, I guess 99% of us would just burst out.
    4. You should have try their limited time offer of "Taiwanese" fried chicken and pick the Sichuan peppercorn powder for your fries! They taste really great and you can see McD's effort to localize and suit Asian taste buds!
    5. McD's boba tea is alright, but I don't think they stand a chance competing with other boba tea brands. This is Asia for Christ sake and how can McD beat us at our own game lol? I think they know this so it is more like showing effort that McD wants to cater Asian taste buds, they ain't planning on going big on this I think.

      1. Yes we still serve plant based luncheon meat.
      2. The Bubble Series is an effort from McCafe to compete with other beverage shops, as it offers relatively cheap ($23 HKD for a boba milk tea) and accessible (any McCafe will serve boba), plus its just $12 HKD to trade-up your coke for a Bubble Matcha Latte.
sidenote: the matcha powder used is actually very expensive

Another thing I'll add is that the fries in the can thing and burger on the wood plate weren't only unique to this Mcdonalds. It was served in many Mcdonalds across Hong Kong when the Make your own burger promotion came out. I explicitly remember the Mcdonalds in Festival walking looking serving similar items and looking similar before changing locations. Finally, a lot of things in this Mcdonalds are quite common across Hong Kong like the wireless charging, slim designed kiosks and just a general minimalist modern design.

Hong Konger living abroad, but I was back home a month ago for a vacation so let me comment some of my observations
    1. Hong Kong is still in pandemic mode due to government policies. As of 2023, all rules have been lifted (except mandatory mask wearing) but it's not uncommon to hear that some people are reluctant to go out and dine in at restaurants. Many have gotten used to a takeaway style.
    2. While it's still fast food, McDonald's has a different role/standard in Asian culture. They are often THE first glimpse of US-American food. Pizza is a rarity (due to long wait time, HK McDonald's we expect the food to be served in less than 60 seconds) but very common to see pasta (btw macaroni is common pasta choice HK but we put in soups instead with cheese).
    3. The food - Customized salad is the only new concept I see here. I ordered the same drinks at regular HK McDonald's before. The special seasoning for fries are usually a seasonal promotion thing, but they do comeback once every few years for a few months. Taro pie is common menu item . Angus beef burger is common menu item.
    4. The location of this McDonald's is at the heart of the business district in HK. It makes sense for McDonald's to try out a fancy version there. Although, competition is great. If I want burger and fries in fancy plating I'm 5 minute walk from a Shake Shack.
    5. USD $37 for that amount of food is fair in Hong Kong. It's not cheap but I wouldn't say expensive either. (I'm thinking of suburban prices though, I don't go to that part of the city just to experience how expensive things can be lmao)

      @xninax3 Рік тому +1

As someone living in Hong Kong I agree with most things mentioned. just want to add a few things:
      - They recently removed the mandatory masks, but a lot of people especially those working in the service industry (as can be seen in the video) still wear them.
      - Since the opening in 2018 both Shake Shack and Five Guys have grown quickly in Hong Kong especially in the business areas along with a lot of small independent burger joints. Hence McDonald's is facing a lot more competition and if you want fancy burger & fries most people would go elsewhere. So this McDonald's is now mostly acting like a regular McDonald's in Hong Kong. As mentioned above most products including all the drinks can be found in other stores across Hong Kong along with customization of burgers & other dishes.

It’s fast food not fancy food. If they want a fancy option, what Uptin described how it was 5 years ago is the only way to make it work. The current way displayed in the video is too much in the middle and just feels like regular McDonald but more expensive.

Go to any McDonald’s branch in Quezon City, Philippines, and you’ll be surprised that the food , including the fries, are served on plates while drinks are on washable glasses. That’s because of a city ordinance in effect. Even Starbucks, too, comply with that law.
