EarthParts #33 - Metamorphism

Metamorphism is the geologic process by which pre-existing rock, or parent rock, is transformed through exposure to high temperature and high pressure conditions in the Earth's crust.
Rock that is metamorphosed is altered physically into a new form of rock that contains essentially the same chemical composition as its parent rock, overall, but in the forms of entirely different minerals.
This episode focuses on a review of the most common forms of metamorphic rock and how they form. Metamorphism of shale, siltstone or mudstone to progressively higher temperatures and pressures after burial, or during a tectonic mountain-building event, can result in the rock types of slate, phyllite, schist and gneiss.
Metamorphism of sandstone in the crust can result in the formation of quartzite, where original quartz sand grains in the sandstone are forged into a strong mass of interlocking crystals that is highly resistant to erosion. Transformation of limestone during metamorphism results in marble, and low-grade alteration of coal can result in the formation of anthracite coal. Beyond anthracite, higher-grade metamorphism of carbon forms graphite.
