How important would you say transcription is to improve one's improvisations? Would you say that focusing on transcription is more important than other musical exercises? I've transcribed a few solos already but I need to know if it should be a 'full time' job if it is a useful learning tool.
It's the best thing to do I think. Exercises that help you develop phrasing are great as well and I do a lot of stuff like that.. I think that combined with your own ideas will probably only get you so far.. because there's so much phrasing knowledge and rhythmic ideas you can get from transcribing that you probably wouldn't find otherwise. When I learn solos I'll look at phrases I really like in the solo, and maybe it consists of scales or arpeggios I've practiced before, so I understand it, but other elements of the phrase, like rhythmic placement, or just the feel or accents etc.. I know I would not have come up with no matter how well I know the theory behind it. That's when I find it's most helpful
@@jeremyversusjazz thanks dude. It’s always been a tough melody for me . I slightly changed the way I played it many times to make it easier, for me it’s all about how you choose your left hand fingering to make it optimal for the right hand picking. That’s how I approach most of this stuff. Also learned it up an octave which is easier to play I think
@@johnmorrisonguitar im relearning it an octave lower cuz i was playing the first pivot wrong...anyhow, the struggle continues--i admire your beautiful chops and groove bro. also--very cool how much transcibing you do.
Fantastic!
Bird was the best!!! Still loving him! Great playing, excellent transcribing skills!
Bravo !! That was perfect
Thanks very much 🙌
That was wonderful… and your tone was fabulous. I really enjoyed this! I wish I could read well enough to transcribe that solo!
Thank you so much! I think reading this would be so much more difficult than learning it by ear actually haha
@@johnmorrisonguitar were you doing this by ear?
This one I learned by ear and memorized. Usually I write out solos when I transcribe
Killer, great feel!
Lovely work on this John !
Thank you 🙏
well done and wow:.....
Great job! I learned this one recently, but haven’t gotten it up to tempo yet.
Nice! I want to see you do Bird's solo in Koko!
Great playing; I like it a lot. I'm not. a jazz player but i like the vibe... can you tell me what key this is in? Thank you!
Cool thank you! Donna Lee in Ab maj 👍
