Titus Pullo, and Lucias Verinus are mentioned in Ceasars "Commentarii de Bello Gallico" (his autobiography of his Gallic campaign), and mentions them during the siege of Alesia, but I believe that is the only mention of these 2 people in history. however, from his description of them it is totaly understandable and admirable the focus this show took on them to portray the events and time of this Epoch!
it was a BRILLIENT move.
by using bystanders perspective the show could show the historical events without ruining them.
The thing that’s unique about Caesar mentioning Pullo and Vorenus is that they were just two common soldiers in his army. Caesar wrote about other powerful figures of the time but I believe Pullo and Vorenus were the only ones in the lower classes that he ever mentioned personally by name.
@@matthewj7814 yes and he seemed overjoyed with their personal competition and the outcome that raised the soldiers spirits more than anything.
Thank you for taking the time to edit and the risk of suffering for the copyright, it's a great series, great material for reacting and you surely will do it justice. Keep an eye on that town crier, he's a recurring minor character and an excelent comic relief!
Verinus and Pullo were real people. Not their journeys in this show but they were 2 soldiers who Caesar mentioned.
Will you react to every episode? This show is a masterpiece
Yeah, I plan to react to the entire show.
@@historystudentreacts ok cool , do you have some kind of schedule or is it random ?
@@historystudentreacts thank you there is a sore lack of informed reaction on this brilliant series.
Did you not notice Caesar playing him for a fool to begin with? More fool both of them and Caesar is on top just as ever
One of the things that broke this show, and caused it's early cancelation was the costuming, if you see a garment that would have been made of silk in the era, it was made of silk in the show, many of the garments worn were actually made of hand woven fabrics as well, making the costuming and set design THE most expensive part of the show. Until Game of Thrones, Rome was the most expensive show ever produced by HBO
this is such a underrated series! so many characters to enjoy. But Pullo and Vorenus are so good! have to love em!
Why do people keep misusing the word "underrated?" This was a HUGE hit. There's nothing underrated about the show.
@@crconway7926 people say it's underrated because it got canceled not knowing it was because of leadership changes at hbo. and also while yes it was popular not as many people know about it as say something like firefly GOT or black sails.
Thank you for watching this series! Marc Anthony is a great character
Rome, Deadwood era HBO was so good.
This is a suprise! A welcome suprise to be sure.
I love how everytime you hear an important person's name, you just blurt out "oh!" everytime, I love it.
I LOVE HOW YOU KNOW YOUR HISTORY!
I loved Rome. The DVD set including watching the episodes with "historical notes" by the creators - explaining why did what they did. Vorenus and Pulo were mentioned by name by Julius in letters home. The filming was actually in Rome - with Roman extras! Plenty of literary licence to cram it all in - pretty unavoidable I guess - but I do think it did a very creditable job of telling this incredible story.
Fuck I love Mark Antony in this series. He's such a lad.
For me, James Purefoy is Marc Anthony😂😂😂😂
This was the best series HBO ever made
The magic of HBO Rome is that the main characters arent the great men of the time (Caesar, Octavian, Cicero or Pompey).
The main characters and focus are the comon people (represented on Vorenus and Pullo) that sufer, fight and interact in the wars of the elite.
A really good representation of the life in Ancient Rome.
Posca!
These videos are great, man! I love this show, even though there are a good deal of historical inaccuracies. I think they capture much of the spirit of the time. That senate segment is probably one of my favorite scenes in television.
Yes a whistle was used in battle
At this point I'm not sure if you continued this series, yet I wanted to say I was very impressed with Max Pirkis' performance as a young Octavian. He holds his own in every scene and steals a few IMO.
I enjoyed your succinct and on point notices of details which weren't 'made up' and actually happened or existed. As you probably figured out, Octavian's trip was a device to connect the common men Vorenus and Pullo to the Patrician side of the story or vice versa.
7:11 Is sooooo loved the newsreader!
Almost makes me want to go out to hug representatives of the Baker's Guild and buy true roman bread baked for true romans!
AFAIK, literacy was very high in Rome, at least to some degree. Best indication to me are the grafitti found in Pompeji, which are often very juvenile and rude. And of course the price lists of street prostitutes. They wouldn't make any sense if commoners wouldn't be able to read.
Caesar tried to buy his enemies, far too merciful. Octavian saw this and saw how that ended up. So Octavian
Learned from that
Kato was afraid (and rightly so) of Caesar being another Sulla, and of him doing the same thing Lucius Cornelius Sulla did to those who opposed him once he took control of Rome .(which he did) the question is , if Sulla never happened, what kind of history would Rome have had in comparison.
caesar did not enact the "proscriptions" like sulla did
augustus on the other hand had no such constraints
You're gonna have a great time my man. This show is a treat for fans of Roman history. I just hope the gods of copyright are merciful.
I gave you a sub not only for risking an inevitable strike for this video, but also for acknowledging the proper Classical Latin pronunciation of Caesar. Though, one little semi-pedantic correction: When you say Caesar in the Classical Latin fashion, the ae diphthong should be held for an extra vowel length. The length a vowel is held changes the meaning of the word from a simple noun to a formal title. That being said, great reaction.
Spartacus is also a good series entertainment wise for this era if you ever want to make this kind of reaction a regular thing, though I'd recommend Kings and Generals Serville Wars compilation video before that 😁
A quick history note, Pompey and Caesar were never co consuls, Caesar was a consul but his co consul was Bibulus and it was before he was ever sent to Gaul.
In an interview with the writers of the show, it was said they wanted to show the authenticity of Roman politics even if it meant to show historically inaccurate events so that it would be easier for people who aren't familiar with the era to understand, so I give them a pass on that account
Rome is probably one of my favorite shows of all time
after this, if you haven't seen the "Deadwood" HBO series... Very comparable to the "Rome" series. True events, western. first thing you will notice is the dirt/ not like old westerns where everything was clean. and real characters from history with their stories there. Wild Bill was killed there. (aces and eights)
Given that Vercingetorix surrendered at the beginning I wonder if that first battle was Alesia.
I am obsessed with this show. I watched it at least ten times.
From what I know, Caesar did pressure Octavia to divorce Marcellus in order to marry Pompei bt Octavia didn t give in. she stayed married with Marcellus untill his death in 40 b Ch. Being pregnant in six months, she married Anthony at Octavian s request.
Whistle is used to rotate lines to prevents the front line from tiring out too quick.this is why Roman armies were usually victorious even when heavily outnumbered
I absolutely love this series and wish Game of Thrones hadn't canceled it since it was too expensive to make. My only complaint about the show would be the over use of hyper sexual content that HBO is notorious for, I watched the first episode with my sister years after watching it originally and forgot how much was in it lol. Made it just a little awkward.
Rome's elite were having a lot of sex, so hypersexual is probably accurate in this case.
subbed the moment you said you did Historia Civilis reactions. Reacting to my favourite show ever was a good start, not being annoying (I am easily annoyed by things like pitch, volume, pace, and poor enunciation) is a huge plus, and saying you've done reactions to that channel sealed it. Anyway, really enjoyed your reaction. Love that you did mention that the Caesar is pronounced correctly w/ a hard C, your view on Octavian, and you do understand a lot of the references to other parts of the history and culture in the dialogue. One thing I wish could've been done is I do wish that there was a feature on the DVD's where the voices were dubbed into Latin w/ English subtitles, or even if they just offered Latin subtitles. My hope is that one day when deepfakes are good enough some nerd or wealthy person will just translate the whole series, and have the whole thing done so the actors actual voices are used and their mouth movements match the language.
Loved the reaction! This show is a true gem!
I think they used Octavian as Caesars kidnapping.
Octavian was 20 years younger than Anthony.
Awesome. Great and very knowledgeable reaction!
Glad you enjoyed it!
It's good you're reacting to this. It's the best thing for it in pop culture. Real history is pretty weird on this. Gibbon mostly.
I was impressed by the accuracy of this serie. Often forgotten, that Rome was literally built on the blood and suffering of countless other people. Very nice insightful reaction! Keep on the good work!
James Purefoy's Anthony is the best
Caesar used Brutus as a pawn in his political game he’s genius
While you don't need to do a reaction of it because it is so short, the channel Romaboo Ramblings did a video on the Newsreader in Rome. It is a short and informative one, so I recommend watching it in your spare time. The two main characters Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo are both mentioned in Caesar's Commentarii de Bello Gallico, Book 5, Chapter 44. Sometimes stated as being in Legion XI Claudia. The Legion itself is not specified, so they could be hailed from Legion XIIII Hispana, which was at that time under command of Quintus Cicero, the famous Cicero's younger brother. Historically they were both Centurions and were bitter rivals. In the series they are part of Legion XIII Gemina.
Great reaction and comentary!
It is delusion to think you're actions have had any consequence
1 minute in... I love the energy already...this is gonna be a good channel!
After studying ancient Roman History, under the late Professor George Stagakis, at UWM, I would say it was a highly enjoyable show. Well worth watching . The worst mistake of this show was their casting of OCTAVIAN. They didn't only get it wrong once, but twice, casting w actors as young Octavian. and the older Octavian. The younger was the better of the 2, but they brillianly casted the show, but STRUCK OUT, casting OCTAVIAN. Nevertheless, a good show, that could been legendary, had the OCTAVIAN character been cast, properly. Otherwise a great show.
Jocasta is awesome!
I just started watching this series. I liked the first episode. Good to have someone react to it.
Good. Info ty
This is gonna be a fun ride to see you watch this show.
I wouldnt say no match for Roman soldiers, but those two
Mabe hang a pitcher on the wall.
I kinda love (however it's made up) the arguably most consequential man in western history, Octavian, pulling a bloody cart and being whipped. 🙂
Have you seen the show before?
Nope, I'm watching it for the first time in these videos.
@historystudentreacts will you do season 2? I don't wanna start if you're not gonna finish lol. Season 2 is much better Than the 1st season too.
Looks like this is gonna be a fun one. The one negative I've heard about the show is that (according to reviews) they apparently just straight up didn't include Labienus :( that's a shame, he was the person I was most interested in seeing portrayed, his dynamic with ceasar and the civil war and all that.
For the rest what ive heard is mainly positive though, so this should be an interesting watch regardless. just a bit of a shame that apparently the second in command turned final boss of the civil war was not included. To make Antony more important early on would be my guess.
guessing this comment is fine, as it just covers an apparent exclusion from the show and it's not like I'll spoil the real history for you at this point 😂
As good as this show is, it follows the "shakespearean" portrayal of events. There's no Labienus nor Decimus Brutus. Even THE Brutus' demise in the show follows the same poetic tone.
Rome's a great show, probably the best one based in Ancient Rome, but there were many events (specially in S2) that should be taken with a grain of salt.
@@luc.espargita a shame indeed, but still very cool. Just imo would've been cooler if all the key players were included. But alas. I do like the visuals and such a lot.
I'm not a content creator but I think your efforts to stay out of copyright infringement are a bit much. I watched another channel's Rome reaction and he's done fine without such major graphical disruption.
I'm assuming you want to grow your channel so I'm just giving some constructive criticism. I'm sure I'd enjoy your perspective on the show but the side AND the bottom banner AND the "COPYRIGHT PROTECTION" are just too distracting.
Define "Populist" 2,000 years ago - also, pronunciation is pronounced " Pronunciation" not "Pronounciation" - blydi hell.
For your information, the representation of Vercingetorix is totally false! the Gauls were as clean (or even cleaner, according to the Romans) as the Romans, the helmet is bogus! (for info the Roman helmet of the Empire is a copy of the Gaulish helmet with cheek guard) more Gauls had almost the same weaponry as the Romans (except the Pilum, the Gauls used the spear) ... In short is not because the Romans called all other peoples "Barbarian" that it is true ^^
The Gauls invented the barrel and were great traders, paved roads (taken over by the Romans) and flourishing cities (Lutece (Paris), Lugdunum (Lyon)...) from France.
