When you said this was a technical piece you weren't kidding.
Unconventional time signatures, rhythms, harmonies, harmonics and oh god the double-stops.
Huge props to Dover Quartet for performing it brilliantly.

Came for the meme, stayed for the music. You said it was complicated, but holy moses. The only string quartet I think I've ever sat through, enamored at every moment!

That was really good. Like, big names good. And the musicians were just incredible. I was a bit afraid that it would be more joke and less composition, but this was a very clearly a proper development of a theme and not a meme-grab. Great, great stuff.

@@TheGlassgubben Anyone who has picked up a 'cello, well, there's all this whistful messing around in the upper reaches of the fingerboard, and then there is the grinding in the lower registers that says "I am 'cello. Fear me". I guess that's why we love the Bach Suites - because you can dig in and be unsophisticated.

Dammit, David! I'm not even into classical music, but this gave me chills all throughout the performance! The resolutions (most notably the N section of Antonin's Lick), the rhythmic passages making good use of the cello range (Leos's Lick comes to mind), I think you accomplished your mission of introducing the concept of themes with memes and creatd a beautiful piece of music to go along with it!

This quartet should be mandatory listening in all middle school music classes, showing kids classical music is alive and kicking! Alive and licking, actually! I already loved your videos guiding viewers through the richness and complexity and joy of all kinds of music, but This!... This is living art at its best! And a million kudos to the Dover Quartet, who is crazy enough to nail all the licks so beautifully 🤩

I really love all of your videos and the pieces of yours I’ve heard. Fantastically pedagogical and always engaging from start to finish. One of the very few artists I patron. But somehow, this was the first time I realized that it’s not just a fluke. It’s not just that you’re a great composer (though of course that’s true, too, and I’m old enough to still be shocked that UA-cam can be a forum for actual quality) but that I really like your style. I was actually afraid to listen to this for fear I’d find it boring. But nope-fantastic.
I’ve only listened a couple of times so far. Loved the end of 2 (R to the end). Loved the way the instruments spoke to each other and finished each other’s sentences throughout. Loved that the viola got to shine. Loved the entire last movement. But I keep finding new things to love, so...
I usually don’t leave comments since I figure no one has time to read my stupid opinion, but I read that the platform counts stuff like that and I want more people to hear this. Here’s to hoping. Congratulations on another fine piece of work. And thank you!

Sometimes I watch these videos and get the impression that I am learning something, that I understand a bit but listening to this is welcome reminder of just how accomplished, creative and sophisticated a musician David is. As others have mentioned it is almost dizzying seeing how brilliant are the performers but to my naive eyes I cannot for the life of me understand how they also seem to be genuinely enjoying themselves! The whole piece is a wonderful achievement.

  • @janTasita

I love how the theme is changed around in so many ways that you've made me almost forget that it's lick-derived by the end of the third movement, just in time for (as far as I can hear) the clearest full lick... and yet instead of (or maybe as well as) being perfect comic timing it comes across as a legitimate melody. I expected the music to be great, but I thought the contrast between the "memey-ness" of the obvious licks and the "classicalness" of the surroundings might take away from it a bit, but in the execution I think the two different aspects of it add depth in a really interesting way.

This is my favorite work I have heard by this composer. While past pieces seemed to me to be dominated by rhythmic qualities, with less emphasis on melody than I hear in this work, and thus less interesting to me, this piece puts melody much more strongly at its center, and therefore I like it more. I also heard most strongly in this piece something I heard hints of in other pieces, which is an identifiable style, which I would characterize as "Demented English Squire," which of course I mean humorously, but also with serious intent. The serious side of that is that the composer brings forth what sounds to me like traditional English folk music and adds all the bustling-ness of a good modern sound with many new and hip things that pin it in our times.

I think that pieces like these, which are both innovative and very new, but also understandable to a lot of people thanks to more "popular" influences, are the ones that are the most remembered through history. Just look at Tchaikovski's pieces, which are constructed with quite radical orchestral ideas, but on popular and very catchy themes. They made Tchaikovski a favorite for a lot of music listeners.
