    It was not a waste of your time. You are teaching your children how to preserve food. These are memories they will keep forever even if you only get a few bags for the freezer. I will never forget preparing garden foods for canning with my great grandmother. The joy was in sitting around the table and talking while prepping the veggies and fruit.

    Any amount you can get from your garden is worth the work. Its one less chemical laiden food for your familys meal.
    The kids seemed to have fun harvesting & helping process the bounty.
    Truely and Royale seem to like the banana chips. Freeze dried is only 2nd best from fresh. So its great for them.

    Bri, you bring so much joy to my heart when I watch your videos. It is too bad more parents can’t be More relaxed like you are with your children and not only involving them in so much of what you were doing whether it’s cooking or cleaning or gardening, but stopping what you’re doing and just sit down and love on them or hold them because they want to be healed or shearing a little banana, freeze dry snack because they want to share it with you… You are truly a great example of what parenthood should look like. I was what I thought was a good spirit, but when I watch your videos, I realize I was way too uptight trying to do what I thought. My mother thought I should do in society thought I should do. The closest thing I did do for my children that I got judge for was some days I just pulled him out of school and we had what was our fun day or a picnic day and we just distressed and decomposed because we were going through a divorce and we pack a picnic lunch and we go to the zoo or we drive to someplace we want to go see and we just spend time together and maybe we would go wash the combine to cut the wheat harvest or is it a local tourist place but the zoo was a Favorite for sure. We also grew a garden, and each of the children has their own row of beans, potatoes, and then we all work together to have Sweet corn & tomatoes both big ones and little grape size did they could just picked off the vine and eat whenever they wanted. I also taught them about the importance of pulling weeds and using a hole and they all had their own tools. The part that was really hard for me was when my children wanted to bring a snake to me or an earthworm because I hated both of them lol,
    I admire you also Bri because you allowed younger children to help cut things up with a knife and I don’t know that I did that with my children, but I definitely did that with my two grandchildren that I help my son raise when the mother moved out of the home! To this day, they like to come to see me and cook together or do art projects together. It has been very hard this last year when they moved out of the state to try to find them selves and now they are both back and your grandma and I can’t wait to do things with them!! I also like it that you were thinking about freeze drying complete meals and that it’s safe if you have fat or lard in the meal… there has to be a way because I know you can buy them online.
    I love how you have taught your children to sing Grace together before you eat and the twins we’re definitely taking it all and trying to know what they should say and do…. Just adorable❣️🌈♥️❣️🌈♥️❤️🌈♥️❣️🌈❣️

    Maybe you can source more corn from a local farmer? I love sweet farm/home grown corn during the middle of winter!!! I make chicken pot pie and it adds a level of yummyness when I put fresh freezer corn I preserved in the summer into the pot pie!!! We also add it to Potato soup, corn chowder..etc... it's just so worth it and so good!! I love shucking the corn as well!! I'm in awe when I see all the layers that are on the ears as well as the beautiful silk hair that is on there. I just learned yesterday (Im 58) that each strand of silk hair on the cob comes from each individual piece of corn!! How amazing is that!!! Lol. 😊❤✌️. I hope u don't feel that it was a waste of time to grow and preserve the corn from your garden!! I think u did great & any little bit of food you grow and feed to your children is such an accomplishment!!! I think your an amazing mom and gardener!! ❤❤❤ Thank you so much for sharing your video's, they've helped me A LOT!!!! 😊❤

    You might want to look at getting one or two of those kitchen stools for kids (they are more like a step stool with fall protection). They are really helpful for kids that are trying to cook or be at the level of the counter, and need a step up. Those tall stools are really not the best because they tip easily. Great tip about the vegetable broth, I never thought about making it with leftovers.

    Put some mineral oil on the base of hair of the corn with syringe 1 to 2 times before they are ready to harvest. It should help to keep the worms off the corn. Just FYI.

    Oh what a glorious harvest of a variety of foods and wonderful time spent together! The supper, as well as what went into the freeze-dryer AND the food you've picked throughout the season really does add up. I have seen where one family kept a chalk board (or wipe-off board) with a list of each kind of produce that came out of the garden, and they would tally the weight of the harvest each time they brought something in. So, potatoes, corn, peppers, beans, melons, squashes - all of it is lovely (even if you sometimes have to deal with those icky little bugs).

    Hack from Nebraska - corn country. What I do when I am preparing it for a meal: Corn is so easy to accidently overcook, and it is so disappointing when it is tough and chewy, so I turn the pan off once it starts to boil and then throw the corn in. It heats through, and you can usually leave it in the water to stay warm until people are ready for seconds.

    I have only tried corn a couple of times before we moved. I tried it again year & was successful…in general haha i knew you had to add something to the silks to keep worms out, but I prefer organic. So I researched & saw that you could use mineral oil. But all I had was olive oil. Figured I would give it a try. Filled an old medicine dropper with oil & kept it in garden. I’ve harvested 2 of my 3 rows so far & no worms. Something to consider for next year 😊

    Bri, Nice harvest! The worms on the corn is gross looking. I had to deal with them myself on all the ears we processed. To make life easier for myself, I just slathered the ears of corn in butter, salt, and pepper, and placed them in food saver bags. I didn't boil them before bagging, and freezing. Rhis way, I just boil the water, and throw the food saver bag of seasoned corn in the boiling water for 7 minutes, and serve.

    Puny corn harvest because you used row crop spacing instead of planting corn in a 10×10 block. It's also why pollination wasn't 100%. Start this Fall to prepare your 10×10 block for next Spring... you want a ton of nutrients & fertility in that corn block, and now you have months to prepare (don't wait for Spring to work on soil).

    • @Brifromscratch
      @Brifromscratch  Рік тому +2

      First time ever it was puny and always did it this way. The problem was the soil. I am sure what you are saying is a legitimate method, I just don’t think that it is the only legitimate method. The 1 ear that didn’t pollinate was on the very end if the very first row.

    Diced peppers go in Denver omelets with ham and onions. They go in chili. They go in Shrimp Creole. They go in salads. They go in anything Cajun as the sofrito and in most things Mexican. I have bags of them alone, bags of diced frozen onions and peppers, diced celery and onions too, even though the celery looks funny frozen It tastes good in soups and other dishes like stews. Some diced carrots frozen too for soups and stews. Also peas and carrots for the same.

    Regarding the home schooling, I have a question you might be able to answer. Do you think that could be true?

    I don't see anything there that is a waste of your time. Even from the POV that your children are constantly learning what home grown tastes like compared to store bought. Also. like you said, it prevents that disconnect that dinner takes whatever amount of time to get it on the table. It takes the time it took from seed to plate, and it's an appreciation that needs to be kept.

    Like you always say, all food is a blessing. So even though you're disappointed, at least you got SOMETHING. Maybe consider putting out predator bugs next year. Have you ever seen a praying mantis nest hatch?! It's amazing!

    How do you freeze dry?

    • @cynthiafisher9907
      @cynthiafisher9907 Рік тому +1

      There is a machine called a freeze dryer. You put food on a tray and put it in the freeze dryer and turn it on. The machine freezes the food and then dehydrates it. The freeze dried food will last years if stored correctly.

    Add a teaspoon or two of salt to the water…this helps it to come to a boil faster. 💧 🧂 🌽

    so great to see young ones actually in nature and seeing where their food comes from. There are actually adults who have no idea what a vegetable looks like in nature.
