I'm 59 and sometimes I feel like crying when I think about how beautiful and interesting hifi used to be I haven't had a turntable for 30+ years and I will be getting a good one when I get a flat
This is very cool - had the same AKAI system since the early 80s' minus the equalizer and with different speakers. Still using the amp and tuner in my workshop area. My tape player stopped working several years ago and gave away my turntable about 8-10 years ago to a co-worker. I remember it was offered in either a Black or Silver finish - I went with Silver finish and so many fond-memories - capturing the 80's Billboard year-end top 100 songs with its tuner and tape player. Today, I own primarily Denon and Polk hardware.
Beautiful system! Akai never got the respect it deserved. Fools always assumed that anything put out by Pioneer and Kenwood was automatically the best.
small midi Akai is equal to small Mitsubishi midi gear and was not made in Japan but in Taiwan....let's say that your Akai gear and top of the line Akai hifi from the 80ies and beginning of 90ies was great. I must admit that my midi Akai and Mitsubishi are crap, costed 700 USD in 1988 but sound too bright, quite dynamic, but nothing compared to a Kenwood A-83. sad but true.
One of the best music system I had about 25 years back during cassette days and it was dream and status to have this complete tower when these were imported in India . Still using its equalizer to enhance the music of my CDs .as per taste .... Really those were the golden days of the music and our generation ......
Great set! Nice to see my first turntable. Broken down now after 35 years of hard labour. Never replaced the belt, kept working fine. At the moment I'm using a Akai AA 1020, over 40 yrars olf and still going steady. Paid €10 for it and €6 for new lights. Great stuff!!
I'm sure if the manufacturers of these sets could re-engage the production of Mini-Disk, DCC, Cd-Recorders, Equalizers and even tape decks, little by little the manufacturers would sell again. There are a lot of people worldwide that missing these audio hi-fi sets and would buy them again. Why? Because just look at this astonishing AKAI modular sound system. It's much better than any smartphone connected to a bluetooth box. And could be even better, just add to all this and do a built-in connection to bluetooth, wi-fi and so on. This will allow any smartphone be connected to modular set. We don't need to drop out the nowadays technologies (of course not!), but there's nothing as listen to the music on a modular set like this one. Please manufactures, action now! I pray everyday for this day!
Emerson Schmidt - Flight Deck Builder There ARE a lot of up to date analogue components! Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo, NAD for example in the affordable price range. And a lot of others above.
i agree my sound system is still firmly based on my arcam receiver it can connect almost anything and its output sound is astonishing with my rogers speakers i spent a lot of time research and hard work to afford these things and they have never let me down a tiny box and some plastic speakers or sound bar cant compete with real HIFI
I LOVE these old hi-fi stack systems. Never had Akai, but my first amp/receiver was a JVC RX-3, with a bunch of other mismatched components; currently I'm trying to build another, but with all JVC components using CompuLink synchro. One remote for the whole stack!
Nothing but the best sound came from these units, and i recon they still sound better then the crap they sell today.....wish i still had mine dammmmmmmmmmmmmmm !
Speaking from experience - Akai's vintage units from this era are an absolute *PAIN* to work on (I'm struggling replacing the belts on my cassette deck just because it's impossible to replace them all without physically moving the power supply!), but I'll admit - their design aesthetic knocks it out of the park, time and time again. Just some beautiful components in that system.
Hola amigo. Es una verdadera joya de audio análogo, gózalo y disfrútalo porque ya no hay y cuídalo porque ya no hay más. Ahora necesitamos convertidores para poder escuchar él sonido más realista. Saludos gracias por compartir
The tweeters look exactly like the Realistic "Supertweeters" from Radio Shack years ago. Used them on a few different custom builds. One set had 2 x 12" poly woofers, 2 x 4" mids & the supertweeter in each box. Had to use heavy bracing to hold them together, individual enclosures for the mids (inside of the baffle boards) to keep the woofers from blowing them out. Crossovers obviously & level controls on the mids & tweets. Powered by a Kenwood 125wpc power amp. They hit hard! Redoing a Kenwood Spectrum 88 rack system right now. The KM-208 power amp is merciless on speakers. 155wpc. Ouch! Thanks for letting me ramble.✌
Love these systems...they sounded near perfect with any given track..and do miss those styled 3 Way speaker system with duct, wish such similar systems with newer connectivity options comes again in the market place.
had the same components except for the equalizer and those monster speakers. Was a bullet proof stereo and considered hi fi for it's time in the early eighties. Wish I still had this system...
and still is,(considered high- fidelity) no new components have the quality in high-fidelity that akai had in the early 80´s and for the price today you can buy a very cheap system with almost flat sound ,at the time a system like this could cost around 1000 dollars ,today with this quality you have to spend around 4000 or more dollars, try to buy the same components from other brand ,and you´ll see, i personally have an hi-fi system from pioneer bought in 74 ,today what i have would cost around a 1.000 dollars and that´s high-fidelity ,i bought in the mid 80´s a akai deck just because i was amazed by it´s quality
If I could have one of this hifi system...I would have new lease of life. My dream come through.80's and 90's we not going to come again...the best years of my especially 90's!
I remember back then in the 1980s that that kind of stereo system was prohibitively expensive for most of us here in the Philippines and was considered a status symbol.
Had this system with analog tuner. Used it for a decade+ in the 80s and later sold it in good working condition. Very Good System ! Did not have the equaliser.

Believe it or not, I have a pair of those SW-187 speakers in my living room right now. I have them on a vintage Sherwood tube amp, and they're quite good. The build quality of those speakers is insane, it's super high-grade plywood, internally braced, they even used the cutout from the woofer hole to stiffen the back panel. The drivers have nice aluminum baskets, the super-tweeter is a tad dated. The crossovers have very high quality components, nice big coils, quality pad pots, and what appear to be polypropylene caps. No electrolytics if I remember correctly. Nice tight bass, can be squaky in the mids, but if you carefully tweak the pads to your room they're awesome. Anyway, thanks for uploading this video it's really cool to see what the rest of the system looked like.
just seems that with hole system with speekers would go for so much more' It's a beautiful piece in beautiful shape' thank you for the reply I love your channel.
Man adjust that EQ. It's flat and doing nothing. Very nice system !! I once owned an Akai reel to reel that was awesome. I could put on a reel in the morning and it would play hours of tunes. I miss those days !!
Akai used to make some quite decent kit back in the day. But they started to go downhill from the early 90's on, producing generic plastic box midi systems, not many of which survive today. But from the late 70's to the second half of the 80's, they brought out some really decent separates, such as what we see here.

Old school music sounded great on these. In Africa, only a few from the elite community owned these. Some of us stuck to our dads gramaphone!
