Wow! That some impressive machinery. I just bought a Phillips reel to reel, my first in 40 years since mine died when I was 17. I had it when I was 8 so I sought of grew up with it. At first I argued with myself over being nostalgic and how I couldnt justify buying another one. You know what? Im glad I didnt listen to myself. It was like having an old friend back and after I played about recording stuff I realized.....there is nothing like listening to music off a reel to reel. Looking at some of those machines I bet they sound fantastic. I would be locked in that room for weeks trying them all out. Many thanks for posting. An impressive collection.
Recapturing elements of my youth, collecting vinyl/LP’s again, rebuilt a 50 year old Thorens TD125 MkII turntable, found a “deal” on a broken Revox A77 Mk3 I rebuilt, recapped, and, in a curious twist, recorded an original issue LP of Fripp and Eno’s “No Pussyfooting” onto modern high-density 2-track audio near-perfection. One of my long-time favorites, the LP was recorded in their studio (as was much of KC’s and Fripp’s and other performers’ music) onto what may have been this exact same model deck. What amazes me is the depth, overall tone, presence “sound stage” of the tape vs LP, especially when compared with digital recordings (which I’ve relied on since my first CD player in 1985). Even with the tinnitus, there’s just no comparison. I now have another A77 (4-track), and am reworking two B77 RtR’s, a 2-track HS and a 4-track NS. Will likely sell the A77 models, buy more tape medium to transfer more of my LP’s. I have to say I am thoroughly impressed with your collection, and the music selection was perfect for the video. Thanks for sharing.
Totally incredible. I have six reel to reels, Akai, Phillips, Grundig. Also a couple of radio sized battery models. The phillips can be prone to belt rot over the years. I have always adored this format, and got my hands on my first at the tender age of 11. As I grew up I never liked cassette, and I stuck with these as my recording format right up to the minidisc era of the late 90s, where i believed the recording quality finally superseeded it. I never parted with any of mine, and the y all still work. Awesome.
WUNDERBAR !!!! That is really .... SOMETHING amazing !!!! From all of them, my eyes were focused on the model *SANSUI SD-5K* & on the *Philips N7150* !!
What a fantastic setup you have. I'm green with envy of course! I've owned a 1964 mini reel for a bicycle, 1972 Sony 630, a mid 50's Phillips mono player and a 40's wire recorder that actually worked with dozens of old commercials from a radio station. Mine was for more practical reasons, but you are one serious collector!
Cool collection!!! I was hoping to see a Crown. I used to work in the Crown International factory, after they discontinued the reel to reels... I used 2 of them when I worked at World harvest radio, South Bend, In. Over 20 years ago... ah memories!!
Wow! Couldn't ever imagine such a large collection of reel to reel tape recorders in brand new condition. That's so cool! A big 👍, congratulations and best wishes from an ardent admirer of tape recorders and tum tables from India! "Old is gold" 👌🌹👌🙏
OMG I'm still trying to buy my first one at 51 years of age. I just want to load my crazy huge old school collection onto some reels and let it play! Nice collection dude!
So, you have the collection but lack the equipment? The primary reason I haven't pursued beginning a collection of these gems is the seemingly prohibitive cost of the media relative to the vinyl counterparts.
@@mechantics hey nicholas, don't let that stop you, the media costs nearly nothing. Most of the times i get my tapes for free with a tape deck I buy. Only the very good 10" metal maxell-reels you can find for 20 euros ( 198 min ), which isn't all that expensive too.
Nice!!!! I have 6 decks, 3 are pro units I bought for my studio in the 80’s and I still use them in my studio today. It’s a great marriage with my digital workstations and it gives me the edge over other studios that don’t have them. My clients can hear the sweetness they bring!!!!!
Tolle Zusammenstellung, die Träume meiner Jugend! Habe es nur zum Besitz einer Grundig TK23 geschafft! Great compilation, the dreams of my youth! I only managed to own a Grundig TK23!
A very nice collection I have just dug my 1970's Philips N4418 out of the attic & fitted new belts now up and running again I had forgotten how great a machine it was, great sound from the built in speakers.
My collection of just two, but neither in your collection: Akai 1721L and Ferrograph Super Seven (fitted with both half and quarter track playback heads). I used to have a Tascam 52 but alas that died, I do miss it.
Very Nice collection friend. I understand your passion for these. I too have a nice collection of around 20 machines ranging from Sony, Akai, National and more.. I also have a couple of Dokorder 1120s too. Love analogue sound and these reel to reel machines have the best playback quality of any magnetic tape system.
Nice, I’ve just been given a Phillips n4450 in great cosmetic condition with the user manual and bifold plastic cover complete and intact. I haven’t plugged it in yet, it’s been sat for a decade in a garage so it’s going to be a big restoration project. At minimum the belts will need replacing but I suspect there’ll be a fair few components that will need replacing. Anybody know of any good restorers in the southern half of of England? I might have a go at it myself if I can find enough info online.
It is just amazing just how many different manufacturers and models of open reel tape decks were on the market for 50 + years. I remember the old Roberts tape reorders/decks/ Knight Kit tape deck, never had one but remember one in a used stereo store in the early 70's.
Probably the only thing better looking than then all those different design reels--especially the aluminum ones--is seeing them spinning on those lovely vintage machines. ;)
I used to dream of owning an Akai 4000D or 1721L In the 70s but never could afford it but did eventually get a Vortexian CBL6 Stereo high speed that still works fine at 55 or so years old . Impressive selection here on this video.
Vortexion, Brenell, Ferrograph were built to last ~ made in the UK, and of course REVOX made in Switzerland . I have a Revox F36 from the early '60s, a Revox G36 from the mid '60s a Revox A77 from the mid '70s and a Revox B77 from the late '70s all fully working and sounding great ~ These were the days when these manufacturers made thing to last!
yes I gotta hand it to u mate,, we love Oldskool Analogue!!!! I am especially drawn to have love affairs with valve amplifiers too.. some dont understand Audiophiles!! sometimes bankruptcy has never sounded so good.. some dont understand sound quality isnt played at full blast.. or sub is just to underpin the sound not over it... good to see.... next is the wall of speakers!!
@marcopolo333333 youtube333 It sounds the best in that era because it wasn't nearly as about throwing layer upon layer and more layers of processing on it... They understood then that the less you play with the signal, the more pure it is.
Very nice... my reel-to-reel collection includes several Grundigs, Sony, Tandberg, Stella, Ferrograph, Elizabethan... over the years I've also had Telefunken, Akai, and Philips. /
Great collection Thanks When I was in Vietnam 66/67 and 68/69The blokes were buying Akai, sanyo Sansui National, Sony all Japanese brands the PX were getting them from Japan
Akai GX 280D SS and Teac A2340R fan my self. Have had Pioneer 707, Akai 4000, Pioneer RT-1011L for 10" reels and few others. My 1st reel to reel was an Akai GX 280D SS which I bought at the Augsburg PX back in 1974. Down to 4 Working GX 280D SS and 1 Teac A2340R now. Have 2 GX 280D SS still trying to restore in my workshop. I'm an Analog man! :) Just like Joe Walsh says. ;)
I once had a big Philips N4506 as shown at 0:23, and an Akai GX-270D. The N4506 was great for its many recording options including adding smooth fade-out on existing recordings. The GX-270D with autoreverse could fill the room for 3 hours on end without interruption using carefully selected music on a tape. I've gone all-digital now, but the former tapes live on as playlists for a collection of flac files.
I have had reel to reels since the early 70’s. Great! Since digital came out I don’t find the need to fool with it anymore.- Happily Digital Audiophile. ( same way with my hundreds of mint vinyls from the 60’s). 💿💿🎧🎧👍👍👍
I bought two TEAC 80-8's to build one for my coffeehouse but decided it was beyond me. They are 2 really cool paper weights. I have a number of others as well.
I still have some old tapes from my father I was about to buy a Philips N4504 but I don't know if it will be reliable and if it will have good sound quality. i have seen for sale some japanese stuff but even the low end ones are expensive here in portugal.
@Arnoud Besseling wonder if i am going to have just one philips for simple replay my recording from my sony TC377, which Philips you may recommend ? cheers

@@bones007able That was a different Crown.

They are all beautiful, I was hoping to see multi-track machines though. thanks for sharing ! love to watch them, seems all in mint condition.
Very smooth and professional video production. Kudos!

A very nice collection I have just dug my 1970's Philips N4418 out of the attic & fitted new belts now up and running again I had forgotten how great a machine it was, great sound from the built in speakers.
