Nice video. Two great pedals. I’ve used the Jan Ray since they first came out. What I noticed is that the range of tone control settings on the Jan Ray in this demo are those I’ve never used. Listening to the differences in tone, the Jan Ray can get the Shanks tone with the bass control at about 10 o clock and the treble control at about 1-2 o clock. I love the increased versatility of two tone controls.
Jan Ray is more like a blackface-style pedal with scooped mids while ods-1 is a variant of Nobels odr pedals with more flat EQ. So a simplified answer is that the ods-1 has a bit more mids.
I love and use the Shanks but the Jan Ray is one of my least favorites I’ve ever owned. The EQ is just boring and useless. To be fair, I love jangly 60’s tones and the Jan Ray feels stiff and extremely modern. The Shanks is crispy and ringy and more vintage like. It still has this distinctive high fidelity that’s very Vemuram. I really wanted to love the Jan Ray and I know some people will. Oh yeah, cut all the bass right off the bat on the Shanks.
Not of the Vemuram Shanks ODS-1, but since it was at least “inspired” by the Nobels ODR-1, you might look into some of the clones of that overdrive pedal.
je pense que les japs nous vendent deux fois la même pédale. bon personnellement depuis que j’ai la jan ray j’ai plus besoin d’autres pédale. alors c’est cher mais je fait des économies.
Love the Shanks!!!

Hitting the Shanks with a Jan Ray is where it’s at!
That's a tough call, slightly different flavors but equally as good.
Shanks sounds awesome
Anyone know the difference is? Sounds the same?

XTS Imperial Overdrive
Nordland ODR-C
J Rockett GTO
Like the shanks more. Less brittle and bright.
That might have to do with how the saturation is set on the Shanks.
Jan Ray all day

I Prüfer the Jan ray
Jan Ray is doesn’t sound good with Vox, too much midrange. would with Fender Blackface amps
