My grandfather on my mother's side died when she was 13. One of the stories I have heard about him is that he would spend his last nickle if he had to, to go listen to opera. This kind of music has brought men stronger than you or I to a mass of tears.

Enrico Caruso made grown men Cry after every Opera! He started this type of singing & was the first blockbuster from the Golden Age! His voice was even more powerful than Pavarotti who knows he's the best! The song " Caruso " is a dedication to him Caruso was also the greatest actor w8 his singing

The greatest vocal performance I have ever heard is Pavarotti singing "Una Furtiva Lacrima". it is here on UA-cam. Look for a pic of him in a brown vest. Brings me to tears ever time i watch it. Thank You for reacting to Pavarotti!

My father would play this song when I was growing up. He recently survived the Covid Virus, and is 82 years old. He can barely breath but he is still here. I thank God he is still here and getting better. You, young man, are lovely...from the daughter of immigrant Italians.

@Marie Whitbread it was supposed to say 'about' Caruso lol.... uhhggg talk-to-text!😫
Before he died Lucio Dalla came to Capri and sang Caruso for us during one of our big festivals...
I always prefer Lucio Dalla's version.
An interesting side note - in addition to his performance in Capri, I bumped into him once in Rome in the late 80s. I was walking around the corner going one way and he was running around the corner coming the other way... running away from paparazzi chasing him with their cameras! I didn't even know who it was until after the fact... It was like a hit and run! I said to by fiance Massimo "what a jerk, he didn't even stop to apologize" and Massimo replied "Tesura, that was Lucio Dalla and I think he's got bigger problems right now"😂 I said, oh.... I thought he looked familiar Lol 😂😂😂

The writer of this song, Lucio Dalla (from Bologna, northern Italy), wrote this while staying in one of the rooms where Enrico Caruso, former famous tenor (From Neaples, southern Italy), spent the final days of his life. Caruso was 48-years-old when he died, and a few years before Caruso died, he married Dorothy Park Benjamin who was 20 years younger. They had a baby girl they named Gloria. Lucio Dalla wrote this song while imagining how Caruso, who knew he was dying, would have said goodbye to his young wife - the love of his life.
curiosity: in sicilian dialect the word caruso means (ragazzo) boy.

James, you finally listened to Caruso! I was waiting for you to do that since I discovered your channel, where you listened to him singing Nessum Dorma, and I watch that video soooo many times! Also, this song is so beautiful, that when Pavarotti songs it, it almost hurts, so please don't fight your tears.
    Keep plugging baway, friend.

He was the best modern tenor, period. I love the fact that you react to more of him, because most people only do "Nessun Dorma". If you really love his voice, go and check any od these: Vesti la giuba, Miserere, La donna e mobile, Una Furtiva lacrima, Volare. He was also know for singing with other genres, check this same song with him and Lucio Dalla, or his song Miss Sarajevo with Bono from U2. He made a lot a lot of music.

I absolutely love your genuine reactions. I was brought up listening to lots of musical genres, including opera, and so it was something that I knew from an early age. That doesn't diminish the way I feel every time I hear Pavarotti sing. He had a magical way of imparting the emotion behind the lyrics, even for people who don't understand the language he is singing. If a man sang to me the way Pavarotti did, good lord, I'd be his for life. lol

this song actually depicts the last days of Enrico Caruso, one of the greatest tenors, very much acclaimed in the US (here the reference of the nights in America, where his career was booming). It was written by Lucio Dalla, another cornerstone of the italian music, 65 years after Caruso's death in the very hotel where the tenor died, an hotel with a wonderful view on the gulf of Naples. The woman in this song should be Dorothy Park Benjamin, a former student of the tenor and the last of his many lovers, with which he had a daughter, Gloria. The tenor, quite sick at that time, probably knew he would not last long (and that's why the reference to the death in this song) although young, he was only 48.

If you liked this you should try Jussi Björling, Pavarotti has said that he was a huge inspiration for him and that he himself is a mere mortal in comparison to Jussi and that whenever he would sing a song for the first time he'd picture himself how Jussi would sing it and then try to do it as close to that as possible.

Pavarotti is playing a professional clown who has just learned that his wife Clementine is cheating on him. But he must go on and perform for his audience, despite his broken heart. I like to think that when an artist moves you that intensely, he or she is in tune with your soul, and you with theirs. These life "particles" are floating around us. They are the voices of our ancestors and all of creation. They never die. Pavarotti found you James, and you found him. It was meant to be. Reach out for all the particles you can, for as long as you can. There's wisdom in them. 🌻

Your soul brother is so very very old
Older than you may ever know
If you are touched by this...
God knows where WE are from?...

There is a very beautiful version of this song by Lara Fabian, a fantastic singer. You’ll love her.

There are a number of fabulous tenors from the 20th century, each with a slightly different tonal quality, which would make them suited to different roles. But none has quite the "ping" in his voice that Pavarotti did. No one I'd rather hear singing traditional Italian songs like this!

I love your reactions. This is how I feel too. Please react to Pavarotti singing Vesti La Giubba. That’s an incredible one too.
