CLIP DESCRIPTION:
During a popular day at the beach, Body (Roy Scheider) spots a large underwater shadow, he believes it's a shark and orders everyone out of the water.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Despite being a less well-regarded virtual remake of the original film, Jaws 2 earned a tidy sum at the box office by combining its predecessor's winning formula with the popular teen horror craze, helping to spawn the era of blockbuster sequels. Roy Scheider returns as Sheriff Martin Brody, whose small resort town of Amity is poised to bounce back from the economic hardship it encountered after becoming widely known as the site of vicious shark attacks. But at the same time that Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) is welcoming a real estate developer to Amity, two divers disappear and a party of waterskiers is consumed by a shark. The incidents are explained away as accidents, but Brody knows better, tipping his bullets with cyanide and forbidding his sons Mike (Mark Gruner) and Sean (Marc Gilpin) to participate in a teen sailing regatta. Everyone foolishly chalks up Brody's fears to trauma-induced paranoia, and the regatta goes forward, with a hungry great white trailing the youthful contestants and hungrily picking them off one by one. Director Jeannot Szwarc would later helm another sequel, Supergirl (1984).

I love how he rings the bell and everyone just stares at him. You'd think everyone has forgotten about the horrific events before. The fact that the mayor seems to have survived the whole ordeal and remains in power tells you the scale of idiots prevailing in that town.

This is such a heartbreaking scene. It's never really stated, but the guilt Brody feels for Alex Kintner's death in the first movie clearly still weighed on him. That loneliness he felt when only his youngest son helped him pick up the empty shells while everyone else either looked at him funny or deserted him just adds to it all.
Jaws 2 is so much better than it had any right to be, and 99% of it had to do with how Brody was written, and the late Roy Schneider acting his ass off.
Jaws 2 is better than it has a right to be? Whatever that means. This movie is complete and utter garbage. It’s fun if and only if one can somehow forget the fact that it’s a sequel to one of the best films in history. It’s a slasher movie with a shark instead of a masked killer. 🤣

@@FreshSpecimens it's a masterwork, like the first (if not as good)...you obviously don't get it, how it is a study of paranoia & anguish in the aftermath of hunting down one shark. And how nothing changes.

I always felt bad for him in this scene. He gets humiliated and everyone gets so mad at him but they should realize he is just taking extra precaution to protect the beach and it’s people that he cares for. After he realizes he was wrong he just wanted everyone to go back and enjoy the water. Poor Brody.

This sequel isnt that bad its much better than the other 2 disasters.
Jaws 2 just needed a couple of rewrites and it would have been a masterpiece like the first.

After the experience he had with the shark in the first movie. You can't blame him for being very protective to the people and the city.
He did fire his gun while people were around though I think that's ultimately what got him fired yes he was trying to be protective but going crazy with his gun cost him big time I did feel bad for his character though.

I most certainly did, loved the relationship he had with his sons, especially Sean. After he got humiliated and look down upon, his youngest son helped him and didn’t care what others thought !! ❤️❤️🥺🥺
Sean is the baby son that most fathers would dream off. There was a similar scene in the first Jaws film when Brody was at the dinner table looking despondent because he knew there was shark out but nobody believed him. And Sean notices his sadness and was there to cheer him by mimicking his actions, causing him to temporarily snap out of is depression.

This scene actually made me so mad. after the previous shark attack, of course you’d be skittish and paranoid. and honestly, even though it wasn’t a shark, it just shows you how alert and aware brody was of his surroundings and was actually doing his job.

Good scene. Brody was clearly psychologically scarred from the events of the previous movie. You feel bad for the guy.
Lone Wolf I think that what was Jaws 2 was supposed to be about. It was to show Brody slowly losing his mind (even though there really was a shark) after that encounter with the shark in the first film. The neglectfulness and ignorance of the whole town committee kind of triggered that motion of Brodys sanity (which i think is why he was killed off between Jaws 3-D and The Revenge because of the "fear").
GTApirate Yeah I agree, he was losing his sanity but at the same time he wasn't wrong about the shark. Horror fans like to call Jaws 2 the "teen slasher" of the series which is true, but that extra layer of psychological stress that Brody has makes this better than the other sequels.

In Brody’s defense, he did take a second look, he looks through the binoculars once, thinks “Am I seeing this right?” then looks a second time through the binoculars, he didn’t just fly off the handle immediately

People very easily forget things. For the public they just saw the attacks on the beach. None of them saw an actual shark. Brody, however, was up close and personal with the beast. He'll never forget what happened even if the townspeople do.

The kid was the only one who was grateful for Brody's effort.
Poor Brody. The man was clearly traumatised by the events of the first movie, and he already saw Alex Kintner getting eaten by a shark on his watch. Later on, Alex's mother even scolded Brody for letting people into the water while knowing there was a shark nearby. I bet that was exactly what was going through his mind when he started ringing the bell. Brody literally states his motivation for his actions during the scene with the town council. "That's a shark. And you better do something about this one, because I don't intend on going through that hell again." While immedeatly starting to fire his gun may have been a bit excessive, I can definetly understand where he's coming from. You would also think the people of Amity would be more understanding given what Martin's seen and done.
Brody's just doing his job. Trying to keep people safe. That's what made me mad during this scene.

I honestly thought Martin Brody was starting to cry when Sean helped him pick up the bullets. You can see just how guilt ridden he is. Even if Roy Scheider wasn't up for playing Brody in this film, he still managed to give an amazing performance.
Roy Scheider absolutely carries Jaws 2 on his back. You never would have guessed he didn't want to do the movie going by his performance.
I felt so bad for Brody. I know it's just a movie, but his heart was in the right place.
It's sad how under played the role of that kids death in the first movie affected Broady. The slap from the grandmother and the harsh consequences of a lack of activity and delusion of the mayor in closing the beach. Broady paid for mistakes he didn't even commit

I remember watching Jaws 2 in the theater when I was only 15 years old. Chief Brody couldn't tell if that was a shark. Waving his gun and firing it in front of all those people was scary, but he was trying to protect everyone. He just got anxious. Poor Brody. That cost him his job also.
Incredible acting from Roy Scheider here. There's no maybe about it: Brody is clearly suffering from PTSD. Its heartbreaking to see.

Exactly, in my opinion he acted appropriately, what if it really was a shark and had a few people for lunch? Then what would they say?
Because he aimed his service revolver at the people on the beach and also used it lol It has nothing to do with him thinking it was a shark.

The way that his son came over to help him even though everyone was mad at him has always stuck out to me.
martin definitely would’ve been diagnosed with PTSD had the events of jaws and jaws 2 occurred today. i feel so bad for him in this scene, he was trying to keep people safe after failing to do so during the last attacks :(
I was on this movie. The shark broke down so the bluefish scene was made up. We filmed in the summer but because of issues we had to go back in the winter and reshoot the scene. It was freezing. But even though I knew it was fake my reaction was real. I was scared making it. Don’t know how kids make those scary movies. I’m the girl in the yellow shirt and my mom in the purple suit. I also did the flips at the first beach scene.

Ugh, this scene breaks my heart. Brody was just doing his job and making sure people were safe. You think after what he and the town had been through, they'd have been more understanding and grateful for his alertness and not taking ANY chances.

Can really tell this was shot in a different location than the first one. The water is so clear he can stand on a tower looking for a shape but in the first one the North Atlantic water was so murky you couldn’t see the shark till it popped it’s fin or head out of the water.

Not sure if I mentioned this before or not, but the thing that puzzles me is why *NOBODY* went back in the water after Brody reassured them it was a false alarm and that it was okay to go back in.

He was shooting in desperation. Subconsciously he knew fine well it could never work. But he's a guy that knew he was right. Plus it's a wee shame they left out the scene where Mayor Larry finally stood up for him.
When I saw that movie when I was 15 years old, I thought that it was dangerous running with a gun in his hand like that. I also got scared when he fired those shots when people were still in the water.

It was probably just a shadow in the water, or maybe a school of fish, but you can't blame him for his reaction, especially after what he had experienced in the first movie. After all, it was his duty as chief of police to assure the people's safety, and already a grieving mother had blamed him for her child's death in Jaws 1.

As a CJ major, precautions like this are totally justified. If someone is told to show their hands and if they reach for something after being warned several times, you shoot to eliminate the threat.
