All of these comments are CRACKING ME UP!!!! "Thorn Bushes", "Processed Hair", Vampires "eating breakfast at Denny's", etc. Laughter is truly the best medicine and it's nice to see the lack of "haters" in these posts too. Thanks everyone-Cheers!!!
I like their diplomatic answers to the "Why did you leave a successful band" question. Steve Howe didn't leave Yes, it crumbled around him after the Drama tour, then he got kicked out of Asia (because John Wetton had made up his mind that "I can't work with Steve anymore"). I like Hackett's comment about Genesis being a "so-called successful band", which they really weren't yet in 1977, at least not in terms of record sales.
First a bubble gum interview with two geniuses and then...Ralph Macchio, Joe Piscopo, Jello and Ball Park Franks! That little groan of delight when the woman bit into the hotdog should have been censored! She enjoyed that a little too much! Mmmmm! Beef, pork and VEEEAAALLLLL!!!!!! Come on Steve and Steve! Step right up and dig in! We prepared these especially for you two! And just for being on our show, as a way of saying thanks and good luck, a year's supply of Jello and Ball Park Franks!!!
Steve Howe before his post-nineties mad professor look. I met Steve Hackett after a gig in 2005, and he was very patient when my camera started to play up.
steve hackett also one of most underrated guitarists all time..EVH got his tapping thing from Hackett,he said it...and would Howe play w/anyone who wasn't up to his caliber...and for anyone who is wowed by Howes ability to play every stringed instrument and well, check out Phil Keaggy, maybe most underrated guitarist all time
@guitarreilly Steve Howe always lived very healthy so that's kinda the irony! saw him play live 2 months ago. looking like a corps almost but very very energetic! he's the best! :)
Hackett and Howe! They should have stayed together after GTR and played as a duelling duet style, such as acoustic and folk rock with some blistering, trailblazing solos for good measure! But then again, that was the mid to late eighties when the general public perceived top 40 hits only as good music! If the radio stations didn't play it forty times a day, it wasn't good, mentality wise!
it was a temporary association based on exploration of new midi guitar technology and write a hit on radio so hackett could make some money and pursue his solo carreer, period. and i'm glad it stayed that way, the two of them are not that much compatible, two completely different mentallity musically. in fact howe is not exactly a team player
Thanks for posting this...I am asking for anyone if they have Hackett and Howe on MTV when they were Guest VJs on video??? I can't seem to find it on the Web.
@guitarreilly your dad is absolutely right he is like me i want to remember those guys as angry young men out to prove they can play and not see an old guy trying to do what he used to do rock pensioners are horrible...move on and do something different tell your dad i know how he feels...please no more reunions
@butcherbird52 You have to agree. Although the BEST music from Genesis WAS when Hackett was in the band...like him, I believe that once Peter left the band, Phil was fine on vocals, but his Pop ethics made the consecutive albums musically worse, but commercially better. Steve left after the album Wind & Wuthering, and the music left with Hackett. Too bad the success of Genesis was based on the "units moved".So, in closing it wasn't "successful" until he left the band!
@guitarreilly oh haha I'm even older! didn't expect that. At the Yes concert people asked me if my father forced me to come. lol! but that indeed is strange of him.. good thing ur still a fan though! Saw Hackett a week after i saw Yes, he seemed much more relaxed. He was quit funny! and awesome haha. :)
@TheMusicalBox22 haha yeah i went to a yes concert a year ago with my dad loads of old guys desperately hangin on to their last bit of head hair it was great they sounded so tight but my dad got kinda depressed as he first saw them in 1971 when they pllayed the yes album and now he was watching a bunch of old guys bangin out their back catalogue not even all the mebers were their only steve howe, chris squire and alan white
@guitarreilly ooh you met him! woa so jealous!! i always thought of him to be a silent man, tried to live out of the spotlights, just loves to perform :) but I'm not sure either. I'm only 19 so haven't been around for that long haha!
@JonWRowe yeah, steve is a great guitarist and cool as hell, but the last 25 years look like they've been physically rough on him. still a living legend!!!!
i feel really sorry for steve howe this is only in 86 and you can already see how badly hes aging he probably didnt take that much drugs in the 70s although im not sure. i think it must be hard cus when he was younger he was a decent lookin dude can somebody tell me if he had some sort of illness im not makin fun i just wanna know
@TheMusicalBox22 yeah im only 18 met him when i was 16 told him he was an amazing guitarist and my idol and tried to shake his hand and hes slapped it instead i learnt later that he doesnt like to shake fans hands incase his hands get damaged i mean cmon that is bloody weird and ridiculous he hasnt lost me as a fan i still love his music and that
@matic3060 yes and if you think about it,it seems that was a nice time for guitar "crossovers",a few years before we had andy summers and robert fripp playing together, those are the kind of thigs that make you shit your pants
@TheMusicalBox22 yeah i didnt think he was into drugs i think his aging has made him quite bitter i met once on holiday randomly and we were praising him and al that and he was quite rude and seemed to want to get away from us like we were herassing him or something
I think GTR could have been amazing, it just fell into so many 1980's cliches: the production, the cheesy singer, the crappy, flat drum sound- ech. They are both so great as writers and players, I have to believe they could have come up with a more remarkable album full of music than they did.
I love the first three songs and Reach Out (Never Say No), which I suppose go for the commercial jugular of the time. The others may be more adventurous, but they're not that memorable. I agree about the production, way too much reverb on nearly everything. It's like it was recorded in a huge bathroom.
@xeractus Dude, the guitars were driving the synths. And hey, after the 70's both of them were trying to distance themselves from prog rock--it became the foot fetish of the music world, you could say. So building a 20-minute epic in 11/8 wasn't exactly what worked for the time. :P
Oh GTR, the biggest dissapointment ever. Yes they made pop music that wasn't that bad really, but when you put Hackett & Howe together in one band you expect sooo much more. A shame it all fell apart so quickly. And odd that the production of the album generally buried the guitars in the mix, heh.
actually the guitar were very high in the mix: the midi keyboards triggered by the guitar that is. and this is 1986, the keyboards were the main instrument in the days, and new musical toys were so attractive . and hackett never was ashamed to admit afterwards that was a necessary step to get some precious money so he can continue a solo carreer with total artistic freedom
My God she just can't take her eyes out of Hackett. She barely looks at Howe even while addressing him. What a let down GTR was. Just an outlet for Hackett to get MTV airplay and be introduced to a new generation.
Steve Howe; master guitarist. Only Page and Hendrix rank higher. But, I am sure that Steve could have done anything he needed to do. I wonder if he has a solo album.
Howe ... The best option -> John Wetton ! Hackett ... The best option -> John Wetton/Tokyo Tapes - 1996 Max Bacon ... A nice guy, just a nice guy ! GTR ... With Trevor Rabin ... Who knows ?
This band was a great idea on paper, but they chose a bad singer to be in the band, Max Bacon, he sounded too pop and cheesy, otherwise the band itself was solid.
Well "sketches in the sun" Is intended to be played at.my funeral....specially this GTR version
Two of my favorite guitarists from two of my favorite groups.
You gotta love how Steve Howe looks like he has just recently been dragged through a thorn bush by his ankles in this interview. Love both guitarists.
Steve Hackett looks like he just got back from Miami Vice fantasy camp
Seeing rock musicians in morning shows is like seeing vampires at Denny's having breakfast
Calling Steve Howe being called a "rock guitar" player is almost an insult. These guys are 2 talented guitar players...
She did say virtuoso

The trolls are afraid of the Prog fans' intelligence.
I cherish any old footage like this of Howe or the other bands I love. big thanks for uploading
She rattles off "Yes", and "Asia" so quickly on the intro I thought she was saying Steve Howe played for a band called "Euthanasia".
GTR my favorite group from the '80s
Funny to see them at that time. Steve Hacketts hair was better than today..haha.

I just ate 4 Ball Park franks due to this video . Yummy 😊
@guitarreilly Steve Howe always lived very healthy so that's kinda the irony! saw him play live 2 months ago. looking like a corps almost but very very energetic! he's the best! :)
Both these guys are legends. Saw GTR back in 1986. Great show...
Though out of her depth topic wise, Joan Lunden was then and still is majorly hot !
my two major influences!
There's something always inherently funny about watching a total square interview an artist.
Brilliant observation then and now.
The 80's were so cheesy!
I knew I was gonna laugh my ass off before one word was uttered..
JL was a foxy li'l babe 'tho

Pleasant, articulate gentlemen.
A far cry from those vice-presidential wannabees last night.
Hudge shoulder pads for those massive guitars!
Steve, you forgot to brush the old hair this morning, eh?
he did not want to loose the hair ;)
Thanks for posting this...I am asking for anyone if they have Hackett and Howe on MTV when they were Guest VJs on video??? I can't seem to find it on the Web.
Virtuoso ROCK guitarists! Master ROCK guitarists! LOL!
@guitarreilly your dad is absolutely right he is like me i want to remember those guys as angry young men out to prove they can play and not see an old guy trying to do what he used to do rock pensioners are horrible...move on and do something different tell your dad i know how he feels...please no more reunions
Maybe GTR should have used Ball Park and Jello as sponsors for the tour. LOL
@maxcohen13 love that 70,80s look that woman had. Dresses, skirts...
@butcherbird52 You have to agree. Who knew Joan Lunden was so hip?
And VERY attractive, too -- Quite the Hottie in the 80's !

I find steves 80s costumes amusing
GMA wouldnt even put sumthin like this on now!
he looks good
@JonWRowe yeah, steve is a great guitarist and cool as hell, but the last 25 years look like they've been physically rough on him. still a living legend!!!!
4:51 - mmmmmm
i feel really sorry for steve howe this is only in 86 and you can already see how badly hes aging he probably didnt take that much drugs in the 70s although im not sure. i think it must be hard cus when he was younger he was a decent lookin dude can somebody tell me if he had some sort of illness im not makin fun i just wanna know
He is just weird looking. He isn't famous for his looks bro....😂
Hot lady
Ballpark Franks - mmmmh!
Joan Lunden does come off like a total ditz in this interview. I'm sure the guys had a big laugh after this was over!!!
@TheMusicalBox22 yeah im only 18 met him when i was 16 told him he was an amazing guitarist and my idol and tried to shake his hand and hes slapped it instead i learnt later that he doesnt like to shake fans hands incase his hands get damaged i mean cmon that is bloody weird and ridiculous he hasnt lost me as a fan i still love his music and that
@degree7 you really think todays are better?
What happened to Howe's teeth? They look better then than now?
wow this is from when joe piscapo had a career lol
@matic3060 yes and if you think about it,it seems that was a nice time for guitar "crossovers",a few years before we had andy summers and robert fripp playing together, those are the kind of thigs that make you shit your pants

Joan Lunden = HOTT

You are crazy
Cerebralcinema - GTR DID, And Does Stand For Guitar. They Named The Band For The Guitar, GTR. Do More Research My Friend.
@xeractus Dude, the guitars were driving the synths. And hey, after the 70's both of them were trying to distance themselves from prog rock--it became the foot fetish of the music world, you could say. So building a 20-minute epic in 11/8 wasn't exactly what worked for the time. :P
And now a word from Ball Park Franks....They Plump When You Cook 'em.
GTR = SHT
I came here to see Ralph Macchio and all I saw was two long-haired hippie guitarists.
That chick had no idea who she was talking to, you could tell she had never heard about Yes or Genesis, ever.

What do you mean, Steve Hackett aged? I swear that man doesn't even have wrinkles!
9 years later and still looks exactly the same from 1973
Things just don't make any sense any more
My God she just can't take her eyes out of Hackett. She barely looks at Howe even while addressing him.
What a let down GTR was. Just an outlet for Hackett to get MTV airplay and be introduced to a new generation.
Worst comment ever in UA-cam
I think that's what Frank Zappa referred to as "processed" hair.
Joan Lunden looks so sweet and wholesome.
I want to do naughty things to her.
GTR didn't stand for "guitar" incidentally. Being the gentlemen they were, they didn't correct her.
Steve Howe; master guitarist. Only Page and Hendrix rank higher. But, I am sure that Steve could have done anything he needed to do. I wonder if he has a solo album.
He has like 15 solo albums. Maybe more by now.
Steve looks snazzy.
Howe ... The best option -> John Wetton !
Hackett ... The best option -> John Wetton/Tokyo Tapes - 1996
Max Bacon ... A nice guy, just a nice guy !
GTR ... With Trevor Rabin ... Who knows ?
what a disgrace cutting to a ballpark franks commercial in the presence of genius! that was embarrassing for them im sure.
funny looking hot girl with weird hair...
TTL SHT
Steve Howe > Steve Hackett
Anna's Bananas > Steve Hackett > Steve Howe
I like Steve better than Steve.
no way, Steve H is way better than Steve H
Jello! Yumm..Where's Bill Cosby?
I guess you know now!
This band was a great idea on paper, but they chose a bad singer to be in the band, Max Bacon, he sounded too pop and cheesy, otherwise the band itself was solid.
@miamigroove OMG yes...i thought i was the only person who thought she washot!
Ralph Macchio - 'cringe'
@BeethovenCDF ummmm no....i have friends that are black..they are not racist....THAT is a racist comment you made!
