This episode hosts an engaging conversation with @TayOnTech a young African American man from Mississippi turned cybersecurity guru. His astounding journey from Mississippi to Texas and his passion for cybersecurity captivates the minds of tech enthusiasts. Together, we explore the setbacks faced by individuals in places with scarce education and job opportunities, and how self-investment can turn the tide.
A large chunk of our youth is engrossed in college education and internships - but how many of us are doing it right? Through my own experiences, especially my first internship at Southwest , we delve into the importance of securing internships early, choosing the right classes, and utilizing the educational system effectively. Moreover, we also touch upon the vital role of proper guidance for those from underserved backgrounds.
As we steer towards the end, we dive into real-world scenarios discussing job transitions, insights into consulting, creating engaging content, detecting insider threats and strategies for acing interviews. We open up about our experiences with different tech companies and their compensation strategies, reinforcing that the tech industry is not just about code and software, but is filled with endless possibilities and paths to success. Tune in to embark on this riveting exploration of the tech industry, filled with invaluable tips, inspiring stories and unique perspectives.

These guys are giving some solid advice, I recently went back to school for cybersecurity at my local community college. I had no previous IT experience, but while attending school I kept applying for IT positions, and internships to get experience. Little did I know that getting an internship is the most critical thing I could have gotten. within my first semester I got a paid internship as a Security Engineer. I'm still learning something new everyday and I keep telling my classmates to apply for any and all internships to avoid the cliché college struggle.

Thats true but not an excuse not try to and get in the field. I actually plan on branding myself this year.
I dropped out of community college and worked in geek squad, but fast forward, now I have a 200k devops job. Still no degree as a black man who looks and is from the hood.

Happy i stumbled upon this, my kind of podcast. I'm only in the intro but got my brain ticking. I don't think you need a passion to make it work, but to reach your peak potential you do. I'm red team focused. I personally am a bit selfish too and I think that helps. Selfish in the sense of I want this skillset, it's something I find strokes my ego a bit being able to hack into things lol I don't go around boasting, buuuuut the pride is definitely there. And I want to improve for me. Money is secondary to it. Of course i want fair compensation but the title, ego, skillset, all that stuff has a big stake in my drive.

I am studying for my CompTIA A+ right now and plan on changing my career from Armed Security to Cybersecurity. I have minimal tech experience and knowledge and a degree in music performance so I am at a major disadvantage. Im sticking to the solid route of leveling up little by little, networking, getting my resume reviewed by someoke in the direct field I want, and educating myself as I go. I know it won't be easy, but I figure in 3 years I can be making more than the $40k a year I make and be in a better position with Cybersecurity. I'm seeing networking and a great resume are key, and also what skills you personally learn (tech and soft skills). I see so many successful people in tech, and I see it isn't easy!

@@Officialprodbytreybeats exactly. For someone completely new to information technology the A+ could be beneficial in terms of providing a foundation. The cert is just useless in the grand scheme of things. The Sec+ on other hand will at least put you in the realm of respectability. Do you have any tips on where I can go from here? Does anybody have any recommendation on what’s the better position to go in within the tech world? I’m very very new to this, but have been looking on & off as I am interested in pursuing a career in tech. I know the most popular is cybersecurity, & I’m assuming that’s the most paid/sought out for? My question is what are other positions that are level to cybersecurity and just as sought out as well?

Configuring VLans, Servers, network segmentation (as we never want the controls network on the corporate public network), network switches ( port security, use putty to check comm / packets, and scripting), configuring user profiles/access, IP and subnetting. Also use Wireshark alot for analyzing network issues. Also deal a lot with setting up DHCP servers but not so much with DNS as we access everything by IP or software. I want to make the transition after I get my certs but am not sure if I'd have to start at that bottom in help desk or be able to go directly to a security role.
