Why are my fire ants partying? The answer will surprise you. I've discovered that it's actually for their survival! My pet fire ant colony, the Phoenix Empire, has started to hold these massive fire ant rave parties. During these seemingly random ant raves, the fire ants would come boiling up to the surface and could be seen running in all directions, in every section of their ant farm setup. It was a behaviour that remained a mystery to me for many years, until I finally discovered the reason for these raves this week. When he mentioned that it's "anting season", it reminded me of something I saw the other day on a walk. Off the sidewalk, there was a massive swarm of ants. Nuptial flight? I took a closer look.
No alates. And all the ants seemed to be paired off, jaw to jaw. I think I stumbled across an ant war.
Cool! Yesterday I saw a bunch of swarming yellow ants (with plenty of alates too). I'm pretty sure they're citronella ants, but I've never seen them before. Turns out they don't forage or come to the surface often because they farm root aphids for honeydew! I never would have cared to look this up before I started watching these videos. Today they're completely gone from the surface. Crazy to think there's a huge colony under my garden :P

Dude. I've cried when I found out my sister was spraying ants in her kitchen. I'm in my 30s she laughed her ass off an I hung up on her. Still not cool f that
I also remember stomping on carpenter ants in street and slashing small ants in planting pot in two with my nails when I was a kid but since few years, the only invertebrates I kill are disease spreaders and pests like mosquitoes and cockroaches. I don't even let anyone else kill bugs.

this happens every spring for the ant colonies around my area. my mail box has become a brood pile multiple years in a row, i feel bad for them but they need to calm down so i can get my mail! most years we spray them with lysol then wipe it out, i feel bad for killing them but they do it every year since the mail box keeps them dry, but its getting annoying!

Watching this series, I think the most interesting thing is seeing how the colony comes to decisions. I'm reminded of the Internet honestly. A bit of information is discovered, the info gets shared, and if it is important enough, it can prompt a mass response.
