Bottom line is: If you really like someone's art and want to share it on another site, or be inspired by it, or even draw fanart of it, ASK THE ARTIST BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING!!! It's not only considerate, but a lot of artists love when people draw fanart of their characters, just be respectful when they don't want you to.

You don't need permission to post fanart, but other than that I agree. Just give credit to the person who originally made the character or send them to the creator via message.

There was a girl I knew in real life, and she hated me and one day found one of my pieces of art in my locker and took it and used it for a school competition of which in our assembly, it was announced that she won. A picture of my art came up on a board and I flipped and shouted while everyone was clapping, 'Hey! That's my drawing I lost! It's stolen!' People looked at me and then to her. The teachers looked into it and found that she took it. I made a fool of myself but got my art back so I'm happy.

Yeah that sucks. The minute I found out that I could upload O.C.s on Deviantart, I started doing art for a series that I had made up back when I was a 1990s CBGBs kid, back when there was no internet. It was 4 punk girls with ADHD. We had a punk band and I was the writer of all the lyrics. I had posted on Deviantart a couple of comics and character sketches. So on October 2nd 2010. My childhood friend and the real life girl who one of my characters was heavily based on died in a fatal car crash. After that I had to totally make my series a tribute to her. So anyways this crazy lady comes on my account and starts accusing me of stealing my character from her male, gay, yaoi obsessed ghost. Then she threatened to sue me because she was the only one who was allowed to have a character die in a story. So I'm laughing my ass of because I know that copy rite doesn't work like that. In 2003 I had 26 original punk songs copyrighted so I knew what copy rite was all about. So I said to her, " Really, does Shakespeare pay you royalties?" After that she just got really nasty and started spamming me on my account. She wrote that I'm the reason why Americans are so ignorant, over and over again in my comment section. I was like "Really, you're that stupid that you would insult a whole country, especially since you live in Minnesota?" So then she got like 75 sock puppet accounts because she wanted me to think she had so many friends... Yeah enough said DDD:

I used to trace or copy art styles I liked but I never posted it anywhere I just did it to help me understand how they did it. My GCSE art book cover was covered in every anime I watched or comic I read, it was glorious. A little annoying when people thought red hood was spiderman like wtf.
I'm making a comic series and I'd be so annoyed if someone copied or claimed my work was theirs, I love my OC's don't abuse them.

dont worry, it is great to have different art styles. for a while i stopped doing heavy lineart and such and did realistic, and it actually did help me get better in the lineart style.
I normally outline my drawings to be thicker on the outside and thinner on the inside and for details, it makes the details pop for me. You'll find a style that's your own some day. For now it will keep evolving until you like it enough to stick with a certain way you do things. ;]
Keep working on it! It took me 16 years to finally find my own art style, so you'll get there someday!
A couple days ago someone accused me of stealing art because I had "someone else's watermark" which I don't know what they were taking about because I only had one (mine) and so I said to them not to accuse me because it was mine it was a very bad old piece of art two but I was still really confused why they thought I was stealing when in reality it was my own art and there was only my watermark on it. Maybe they just wanted to start and argument. But I don't know.
maybe your watermark looks similar to someones else's.

To avoid art-theft, or at least tone it down a little, if its an original character, put your signature wherever you want it, but in fan-art, or art of things you like to draw, put a watermark slap-bang in the middle, or at least close to the character so the thief can't erase it without losing the drawing

I put my signature on my character and then i turn the opacity down a bit on the signature layer, this way if someone wants to steal my art, my signature will be on the drawing itself
Oof, if you don’t want to put it right over the drawing, have a subtle gradient or pattern in the background and then sign by the head. Most people won’t cut off the head or upper body when stealing art. If you put it by the feet, people will just crop it to look like a waist up pic, but they usually don’t take the head off. With a gradient or pattern, most thieves are too lazy to recreate it when they cover it (if they even do). So just zoom into the covered signature and use that as proof. Anyways, essay over. I just do that myself now and it helps.

I feel the same way when someone copies/steals my art, I'm not on DA much, but there's a website I'm on ALL THE TIME for programers and animators, I post almost ALL my art on there, I have a few OCs that I use all the time, and when I find someone has stolen them I get so sad, it's like they have just kidnapped my child. Because that's what OCs are, your children.
I used to trace as a kid to learn but i never really posted it. But i always took credit showing my friends and now i feel vv guilty :((

One of the few reasons I'm glad I'm not widely known as an artist is so I don't have to deal with art thieves (that I'm aware of) and since I tend to write all over posts with my art "Pls don't repost baes kk thnx" (Not like that obviously lmao) and since I'm not that good I think I'm safe for now ^^

I used to trace and steal art, and I feel terrible about it. I feel like a horrible person about it because stealing other people's art felt good to me! Gosh I was such a terrible person.
But the only reason I did it was because I knew my art would never be as good.
Eventually, I learned that I need to be confident in my art and I stated drawing my own art again , and I've gotten much better

a few days ago someone sent a really detailed and amazing drawing into a group chat I was in. Everyone else was giving them loads of praise but I'd seen their other art so I didn't really belive that they had drawn it. After a few minutes of googleing I found the picture and turned out that, as I had suspected, it wasn't theirs. I called them out and they apologised. I felt kinda bad but then I remembered that they said that the art was horrible and they wanted to burn it so I felt less bad. It really annoys me when people do that

I will take a drawing I love and I will draw it in my sketchbook, trying to get it to look as exact as the image.
I do not sell it, sometimes I will put it on my insta because im proud that it looks good (not tracing because im not holding paper up to the image, im free handing I suppose) and I just keep it in my sketchbook. I do this because it MAKES ME A BETTER ARTIST. Im self taught. I draw other's art because I haven't yet developed my style and I am not creative enough to come up with 100% original characters or other.
Im not selling it, and if someone asks I will tell them whom it was "taken" from. Aka that I used an image to draw it. I do this because it helps me learn how to identify the shapes and how to actually draw well. Im a beginner and I will keep doing this till I am able to draw my own.

there is an app called Sketch I used to use. more than half of the user's were tracers. I actually used to trace to but I deleted ALL of it knowing its so wrong. one thing that was really great about the app was that it wouldnt let you screen shot anything.

I had an art book. I still have the art book. The book was a "I help u with art but pls no copy" book. I didn't know how to draw anything in there. So I would start copying the drawings. I literally just changed my head style and eyes. I DIDN'T COPY THE BOOK STYLE.
i am still trying to find a good art style, so i use other people's art styles as references, but i never post my art anywhere bc i'm insecure about my art. i don't steal other people's original characters or any art of theirs at all though, that ain't chill.

Remember how I told you about that girl who slapped my friend? well she really liked my oc blueberry so I drew her a picture of blueberry... then sometime later she had been showing other people her oc's called the fruity somethings (idk) which where all traces of my oc blueberry. but she did agree to throw them out.
whoaaa what the heck really? wait were they all traced after the same exact picture but just...colored differently? i mean i guess it's good she threw them out since most tracers tend to not acknowledge it but ahh

That accusing people for copying thing, there was this artist on tumblr who got accused by this random person like "OH YOUR CHARACTER LOOKS LIKE THIS ARTIST" even though they don't even look alike. Even the artist whom they got accused of copying from was like, "Uh okay no stop that it's not even similar aside from the characters both being demons."
