One of the best Stephen King adaptations out there. Easily earns a 9/10 from me. Sheriff Buster and his wife is easily a highlight of the movie. Director Rob Reiner went out of his way to make him and his wife rich characters. I honestly would have love to see more of him solving crimes. Fun Fact: James Caan and Kathy Bates clashed over their acting methods. Caan believed in as little rehearsal as possible. Bates, with her theater background, was used to practicing a lot. When she commented to Rob Reiner that Caan was not attempting to relate or listen to her, Reiner told her to use that frustration toward her character.

Has there ever been a character so insane and unpredictable, yet so human? I don't know. What did you think of Misery? Coming up: Blade Runner, Logan, O Brother,Where Art Thou, & The War of the Worlds (1953)!
Loved it! Vividly remember renting it from the video store when I was 11! I watched it several times. The book was equally as good, but woo boy the hobbling part was a tad different!!! Please watch Dolores Claiborne soon! Another great King book and movie, also starring Kathy Bates.
Absolutely great work and writing. Annie was certainly an insane physopath. Kathy Bates is really a sweet lady and kind, but she nailed this part. Kathy Bates also gave us some chuckles as Molly Brown in Titanic. She also played the Secretary Of Defense in the Kenou Reeves version, The Day The Earth Stood Still.
Kathy Bates won the Oscar for her role in this movie Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Warren Beatty, Ryan O'Neal, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Robert DeNiro were almost cast as Paul Sheldon. The scene where she breaks his ankles was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments. Saw this film on CBS Sunday night Movie in 2003, didn't know what it was about, then I learned its about an author, believed dead after a car accident, is rescued by an obsessed fan, whom forces him to write a new book just for her, or he'll face the consequences.
Nobody wanted the Paul Sheldon role because they saw how passive and hard it was to play. All the focus seemed on the other role, that would get all the attention.
_Misery_ is about the insanity that fans can get into. It was a cathartic story about the crazy people that can latch onto famous folks. The great Harlan Ellison wrote a story about such fans, what he called "psychic vampires", who can suck their idols' lives away with their grasping and their entitlement. It had the perfect title: _Try a Dull Knife._ (Harlan was a master at titles.)
I always have a great laugh with your reactions! Kathy Bates does an amazing job in this movie. I love it so much. I'm glad you saw the humanity in her at times. I love when the antagonist has such layers.
In the book, he burned a stack of blank paper with the title page on top. He'd actually saved Misery's Return under the bed, and had it published. It was widely regarded as his best work, and ignited (ha, ha) the popularity of the series. He reconciled himself to the fact that was always going to be writing Misery, but that that wasn't so bad now. Also in the book, Paul's injuries would have kept him from ever walking again without a very severe limp, but Annie hobbling him (cutting off half his feet with an axe) enabled him to be fitted with prosthetics to walk with a cane after physical therapy. This was directed by Rob Reiner. Please watch another Rob Reiner film based on a Stephen King story, Stand By Me.
The expressions on ur face throughout this reaction were priceless. Could see every emotion and that made the rewatch for me richer including u trying to dodge a bullet. I hope you'll have a look at the film Dolores Claiborne from -95 some time. Its another Stephen King adaptation that stars Kathy Bates in a fantastic role, in many ways the exact opposite of her role here in Misery.
So true! So underrated and a haunting film. After King saw her performance in Misery, he wrote Delores Claiborne just so she could be in the film adaptation. How beautiful is that?
I have said this in other videos, the move is pretty tame compared to the book. Annie cut off one of his feet and cauterized it with a blow torch, cut off one of his thumbs with an electric knife and put it on a cake like a candle, and ran over the cop by driving a lawn mower over his head.!! That being said, I though it was one of the best movies adapted from a Stephen King novel.
For over 20 years this film has helped keep me off the back roads of upstate NY whenever it's snowing. Oh, and Annie/ Cathy Bates bears a striking a resemblance to the mother of a kid I grew up with. They both frighten me.

This was one of the few times I had read the book BEFORE seeing the movie. I had just finished it when the trailer for this came out, so I made sure to see it. I have never seen a more faithful adaptation of a book - not even another King movie - and so I think I was even more able to appreciate Kathy Bates' & James Caan's performances. I can't say when I read the book, that I had a clear idea of what Paul Sheldon looked like, but once James Caan read through the first couple of scenes, he became the detail on silhouette and Paul Sheldon came to life. And Kathey Bates... She should've taken the Oscar for this, no question!! She was exactly how I pictured Annie Wilkes. And her delivery of some of the most nonesensical lines, yet somehow her delivery gave them meaning and weight, as things like the 'cocka-doodey car' could have easily come off as camp, or cartoonish. I expected Annie to be a bit older, but otherwise - spot on. And the Sherrif and his wife were a true delight...until Annie. :( Anyways, LOVE the channel. Subscribed & Liked! Can't wait for your next one.
You’re exactly right about some of the lines. It could have easily come off as silly or cheesy, but with Bates performance it just really worked. Definitely Oscar worthy!
To be fair, I totally agree with Annie on not "get(ting) out of the cockadoodie car"- I love cliffhangers, but hate when the writers cheat a story as though we all didn't see what happened.
I think that’s one reason Paul said the experience helped him. Annie held him to account on lazy writing (even if the methods she used were reprehensible). She was cruel, evil, manipulative, and horrific, but she made him, as he put it, a writer again.
Solid reactions - one of the best King adaptations - and again Rob Reiner directing (he also did the well done STAND BY ME by King) - with a truly unsettling turn by Bates who justifiably won the Best Actress Oscar as Annie - one of cinema's great psychotic villains up there with Norman Bates and Hannibal Lecter. Kudos to Caan for his out of his wheelhouse comfort zone of being a macho tough guy and showing his vulnerability.
I'm reading the book and I rewatched the movie tonight. Now I watch reactions :) It's just the best movie based on a novel by King for me because it's realistic stuff. IT can't be real, Pet Sematary can't be real - but this could happen!
Hey Chris: I've missed watching your reactions. You just haven't reacted to any recently that I'm familiar with. But this one was awesome. Your editing includes all of the essential pieces to tell the story, and your reactions are genuine. Nice job on this one. "Stand By Me" would be another great one for you to react to.
@@CasualNerdReactions however, the sentiment behind "call for help" is why Chris the human being is loved and cherished. and one of he reasons you'll be one of the first to go during the Apocolypse. sadly 😢. but who would want to live in that world anyway.
Look, it's a great movie. And being told "the book was better" bores everyone to tears for a reason. But in this case specifically, the book is so uniquely different I wish there was a new version. It's MUCH more Texas Chainsaw, including an actual chainsaw. Thumbs up
p.s. Saw the Broadway version with Bruce Willis and Laurie Metcalf a few years back. Sadly, his medical issues would explain a lot. Laurie was great, though!
Paul Sheldon was an extremely hard role to cast, as Rob Reiner deliberately wanted a "tough guy" actor to contrast the extreme vulnerability he's in, and just about every such actor he went to (including Warren Beatty, Robert De Niro, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Gene Hackman, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Robert Redford, and Bruce Willis) turned it down because they were worried it would hurt their image. But luckily he also went to James Caan, who actually was willing to humble himself to take the role, and the rest is history.
Oh wow, first off his rational for going against type is brilliant! Second, I can’t help but wonder if any of them wish they had taken the role- not that their careers were hurt, but it’s just such a great film!
I am writing this just previous to watching your reaction. I can only hope you enjoy this not only as much as I enjoyed watching this movie, but the repete enjoyment I have gotten dozens of times watching others reactions to it. My only problem is I can only give one thumbs up to you reacting to it. Enough with the emotional blather, lets get on to what you thought ....
When people think God is talking to them...he`s not. I LOL for real. I read a lot of Stephen King back in the day and yes this is one adaptation that is very close to the book. On a side note...I have that exact same shirt. GAP? Does that make me a CasualNerd now too? 🤔
1. A mustang isn't a very good vehicle to drive in the snow. 2. Red flag #1: Anyone that says "Oogie" 3. The way she responded to the fire in the BBQ pit when he threw a match on the book: What do you expect? 4. In the book Annie chops his feet off (not just hobbling him). It IS Stephen King after all. 5.Kathy Bates won Best Actress Oscar. 6. King wrote this because of an internal fear of what "Number 1 fan" might do.
William Jones - 6. isn't entirely true. Stephen King wrote the original book based on his own drug addiction. Annie Wilkes was a metaphor for the cocaine he took and how he felt imprisoned by it and he based Paul Sheldon on himself and how he got through feeling trapped by the drugs when he was writing his earlier works.
@@williamjones6031 - You're right in that he wrote it based on an internal fear, but it wasn't as literal as you suggested in your original comment. He didn't have an internal fear of an actual human "number one fan" who was obsessed with him and would kidnap him. The "number one fan" was the cocaine that he was addicted to, which is again what Annie Wilkes represented.
Boy do I know a thing or two about being a hostage in writing. I can't watch Misery without the movie reminding me of an ex that wanted to self insert herself into everything I've ever written. Whenever I disagreed she would become distant or just outright become emotionally vicious. At one point in the relationship I committed some form of career suicide and lost opportunities and relationships because of it. Almost ended my own life in the aftermath. She turned my life outside down. The only thing missing was having both my feet bludgeoned as well. But I'm mostly okay now, apart from some very harsh trust issues. It took a very long time to just get a sliver of a recovery from it.
@@CasualNerdReactions Thanks great channel, if you haven’t seen I recommend Stand By Me, another Stephen King story directed by Rob Reiner, a coming of age story. Well played sir, why is that so familiar…
Oh that’s tough! A quiet place possibly the most immediate pain, but misery for sure wins the long term. Does the glass slippers guy in moon knight even feel pain? 😅
this movie actually physically hurts me, the foot scene, i have two broke ankles that will never heal, so i KNOW the pain it really causes me physical reactions but its a great film and i am glad you are watching it, will skip certain parts LOL
I know I’m in the minority but I’ve always had a really weird crush on Annie as portrayed by Kathy Bates. If I could explain it I would, but even I think I’m strange. 😂
You know, I really enjoyed your reaction! The only thing that was a drawback was at the beginning when you nearly spoiled the movie...twice. What I mean by that were two highly educated guesses that turned out right. However, as one reacting you must train yourself to REFRAME from saying those those things because your audience knows before you know and it takes away from their viewing enjoyment. Overall, a very good job.
I love the story telling aspect (as well as Kathy Bates' performance) of this story, but I am a bit tired of S. King's stories because they have become predictable, even formulaic. I would like to see Hollywood veering away from King and more in the John Saul/Robert McCammon/Larry Niven direction. John Saul's novel 'The God Project' would make a fantastic film, as wood, Robert McCammon's Boy's Life, Swan Song, and of course his two monster stories: They Thirst and the werewolf in WW2 action horror 'Wolf's Hour'. As for Larry Niven, he has the award-winning 'Ring World' saga, and the Tales of Known Space--including the GIL Hamilton stories like 'Patchwork Girl'.
*Most* King adaptations into film are sadly crap, imao. Misery, obviously, is a tip-top exception! Rob Reiner is *such* a _damned_ good director! Your cup overfloweth, Chris, 'course. But the King adaptation of Needful Things (1993) is Castle-Rock solid! The Devil comes to town and makes the nice people go cock-a-doodie crazy, sinning each other to death. It's a dilly!
NEW SUBSCRIBER! Would you react to ROPE ? An oldie by Hitchcock . OR would you react to CHARADE? It's called the best Hitchcock film NOT made by Hitchcock ! Don't spoil it for yourself by doing research first. Huge part of enjoying both is not knowing whodunnit in the case of CHARADE. And not knowing how ROPE will end! I really enjoyed both and would love it if more reactors saw these two films.
Kathy Bates should've gotten two oscars for this performance.

Anyways, LOVE the channel. Subscribed & Liked! Can't wait for your next one.
You’re exactly right about some of the lines. It could have easily come off as silly or cheesy, but with Bates performance it just really worked. Definitely Oscar worthy!
You need to watch " Dolores Claiborne " . Kathy Bates' performance in that is outstanding .
It’ll happen eventually!
Binge watch all your videos, your reactions are great and hilarious
Misery is one of my faves. Loved your reactions to this 😂
HEY Chris!! Great reaction to an AMAZING movie!!
~Dawne
Hey Chris: I've missed watching your reactions. You just haven't reacted to any recently that I'm familiar with. But this one was awesome. Your editing includes all of the essential pieces to tell the story, and your reactions are genuine. Nice job on this one. "Stand By Me" would be another great one for you to react to.
I enjoyed editing this one a lot! Will def check out stand by me at some point.
You know that I LOVE your King and Hitchcock reactions!
2:11 "yeah, i'll just pull out my mobile phone" said no one in 1990 😐
Accurate.
@@CasualNerdReactions however, the sentiment behind "call for help" is why Chris the human being is loved and cherished. and one of he reasons you'll be one of the first to go during the Apocolypse. sadly 😢.
but who would want to live in that world anyway.
I love Kathy Bates, she seems fun.
Real fun at parties, I’m sure.
Chris, at the end you were moving around like you were riding a rollercoaster; "Thats right, my arm works, sucka!"😀
Haha coming soon to universal studios!
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😉
Did you know Lauren Bacall was an original member of the Rat Pack with husband Humphrey Bogart?
It's Kathy Bates's show. Steals it and got an Oscar, when that meant something.
There was a really interesting series telling her story. It was pretty good.
It’s called Castlerock.
I’ve heard of castle rock! Maybe one day I’ll check it out.
Ooh It would be interesting to see that version for sure.
@@CasualNerdReactions Bruce Willis later played the role in a stage adaptation, though it didn't do very well.
You aced it again, Chris! Now, how about watching Play Misty for Me (1971), starring Clint Eastwood and Jessica Walter.
Excellent reaction! Just subscribed 🙂
Thanks so much! Welcome to the channel.
Buster was my favorite character :(
When people think God is talking to them...he`s not. I LOL for real. I read a lot of Stephen King back in the day and yes this is one adaptation that is very close to the book. On a side note...I have that exact same shirt. GAP? Does that make me a CasualNerd now too? 🤔
I’m not sure where I got it haha but cool! You’re def a casual nerd. Does that mean you’re making the next video? 😅
@@CasualNerdReactions No that's all you my friend. Keep making great content! 👍
1. A mustang isn't a very good vehicle to drive in the snow.
2. Red flag #1: Anyone that says "Oogie"
3. The way she responded to the fire in the BBQ pit when he threw a match on the book:
What do you expect?
@@kwesiidun8512 If you say so. Plausible
@@kwesiidun8512 I understand. For example, he says he was so messed up that he doesn't even remember writing Cujo.
@@williamjones6031 - Precisely.
Late to the party, but prediction: hobble scene, screams of terror.
Reality: pretty much.
Such an amazing film.
Brilliant film and reaction.
Double Tap comment 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Please watch Dolores Claiborne, another Stephen King adaptation with Kathy Bates. It's an emotional ride!
It’ll happen at some point!
Great Reaction..
Love this movie...
Great reaction to a great movie!
So sorry you went through that! Grateful you have some sense of recovery from it and that your feet are ok.
@@CasualNerdReactions One day at a time. I look forward to more reactions! I came across you just recently and you remind me a little of my uncle haha
You said let’s experience Misery for the first time. I saw Jack and Jill with Adam Sandler so I’ve already experienced misery…
🤣 well played, sir!
@@CasualNerdReactions Thanks great channel, if you haven’t seen I recommend Stand By Me, another Stephen King story directed by Rob Reiner, a coming of age story. Well played sir, why is that so familiar…
@@CasualNerdReactions Princess Bride 😀
Sand By Me actually coming next week on Tuesday!
3:29 listen to chris... he learned the hard way. learn the easy way.
I understand Annie Wilkes will be starring in the new Footloose movie……
…oh my… that took me just a moment to get, but it was worth it! 😅🤣🤣
Most painful foot scene: this film, A Quiet Place, or Moon Knight?
Oh that’s tough! A quiet place possibly the most immediate pain, but misery for sure wins the long term. Does the glass slippers guy in moon knight even feel pain? 😅
Kathy Bates performance.......
10/10 🏆
this movie actually physically hurts me, the foot scene, i have two broke ankles that will never heal, so i KNOW the pain it really causes me physical reactions but its a great film and i am glad you are watching it, will skip certain parts LOL
Oh my I can only imagine that hurt!
@@CasualNerdReactions ok it wasnt quite like a sledgehammer to the ankles, (or the worse in the book),but i know the pain ;)
RIP James Caan
Indeed! He will be missed.
I know I’m in the minority but I’ve always had a really weird crush on Annie as portrayed by Kathy Bates. If I could explain it I would, but even I think I’m strange. 😂
Some things are best not explained haha.
✨🤣✨🤣✨DOUBLE TAP!!!!!!✨🤣✨🤣✨
😅💯
You know, I really enjoyed your reaction! The only thing that was a drawback was at the beginning when you nearly spoiled the movie...twice. What I mean by that were two highly educated guesses that turned out right. However, as one reacting you must train yourself to REFRAME from saying those those things because your audience knows before you know and it takes away from their viewing enjoyment. Overall, a very good job.
i'm your number 1 fan
*shudders in horror*
@@CasualNerdReactions ok mr man
I love the story telling aspect (as well as Kathy Bates' performance) of this story, but I am a bit tired of S.
Rob Reiner! *needful things is noted*
You're so funny. 🤭
You now know what scares Stephen King
Indeed!
I never research! Lol both of those are ones i definitely want to check out.
The look on your face...only Kathy Bates elicits this.
So this is what Stephen King thinks of his fans. Got it. :D
did you realize she cut his brake lines in the beginning???
It crossed my mind, but I didn’t really “realize it”.
@@CasualNerdReactions yeah she was watching him and cut his lines which is why she followed him to the crash.
RIP James Caan
