There is a story that Holika(doughter of demon king), she has a boon of immune to fire. His nephew-"Prahlad" was extremely devoted to lord Vishnu. So, Holika tricked his nephew to burn in fire but what happened was Holika who was immune to fire gone burnt down to ashes but prahlad came unharmed bcz lord Vishnu saved him. That's why it is celebrated as buring of evil and gaining of good within us.
