I mean she still is, this is also the early chapters. in the novel it tends to alternate moods between more chill arcs and more intense ones, some fights are relaxed, others she loses limbs, is on 1 hp, activates berserker and barely survives

Fair review, I've been following this series for a couple years(the novel and manga), so It's interesting to see what it looks like the first time around.
I will say that the inevitability of cut content kind wrote out the details of why Goblins need to die, along with some of the stuff that make the setting more interesting. and in the source material, the already game-like world is made clear to be more gamified for the protagonist's benefit und understanding, because inhabitants of the world understand these things intuitively. Also the reason he's a sword turned out to be way more interesting than I ever thought it would be.
After watching the first few episodes I went ahead and read all available light novels in English, and, a lot of your complaints are actually rooted in the source material. People teleporting around (or moving so fast they may as well be) are pretty much a staple of pretty much every fight from midway through Volume 1 onwards, and less important fights (like Teacher’s bossrush before meeting Fran) don’t go into too much detail (despite him not meeting her for like sixty pages). The MMORPG stats are also just what So I’m a Spider did, but instead of being a mystery and an interesting piece of the lore it’s just… how that universe works, I guess? The story is strong enough that I am able to enjoy it despite that, and at least the animé is able to mostly gloss over it. That shit eats up a lot of page real estate. Fran also doesn’t act so much like a loli and her personality is markedly more aloof and catlike, in a way that is just as if not more adorable than what’s been shown in the animé. Amanda also wasn’t a creep. I don’t understand why they felt the need to make that change. If they wanted a fan service character they didn’t need to alter her personality in a way that makes you question why she’s so devoted to protecting children. The pantsu shopping scene was in the light novel too. The scene where Fran takes Teacher into the bath isn’t, though, Fran goes by herself and meets Nell there without him and we aren’t privy to what exactly their interaction entailed. I have a soft spot for these sorts of stories where the main character is overpowered or otherwise weird and constantly does shit that befuddles, bewilders, dumbfounds or otherwise confuses the hell out of all those who witness their greatness, whist completely ignorant of their strangeness. This series quite adequately scratches that itch and it bothers me that the next volume won’t be translated for like half a year.

At least the narration was strong enough to counterbalance it and the stat/skill descriptions get progressively less prevalent as the books go on. Had I already read a few stories like that I might not have been able to get through to the end of it, which would have been a shame since it is truly a unique and interesting story. The final Volume of So I'm A Spider's English translation came out recently, I'll have to check and see if the author has written anything about our favourite arachnid post-whatever the hell happened there. Still waiting for the next Volumes of Reincarnated as a Sword to get translated, in the meantime.

I know I'm a year late but for me this series is probably the most solid isekai I have ever read/watched. For me it's just a constant 7.5-8/10, never fluctuating which is pretty impressive
I had fun watching it, but it's nothing outstanding or anything. Just a comfy anime to watch. The novels are fun at first but take a weird turn later on and get pretty bad later, but the arc they covered in the anime was fun
The bad arcs which are really bad for me are the pirate arc and beast nation arc, the fight and story of those arc are so bad I just want to read the dialogue and skip the whole things. But the other arcs I can feel the improvement of author in writing, the fights are still long but it is compelling enough for me to read through the whole things. And if you didnt reach the school arc, I recommend you to give it a try because that arc is one of few time Fran and teacher truly have character developments, and it also has some good plot twists too :))
I enjoy that fact that he can't decide if he should recommend it or not, but he has the most legendary Op & Ed songs playing in the video! 😂😂😂 By the way, I have watched almost the whole show in Japanese, & it is Awesome!!!! Fran evolving doesnt mean she gets to magically grow up. she grows up in a normal rate anyways. the reason that shes a child is... well because shes a literal child. Her parents were unevolved black cats too, and were normal, grown up adults. So i dont think shes unevolved for loli plot reasons. I think evolution means something else here, like actually changing form, or a huge level up in strenghts and skill. The blue cat she fights is evolved, and looks like a were-cat, so maybe evolving would make her into a more animalistic shape. or maybe blue cats are just more animalistic than black cats anyways idk.
It's an above average isekai, fran as a mc is nice, the whole black cats can't evolve thing gets revealed later in novels. It was a fun and relaxing watch for me

I just want to tell lunar as a long time supporter and a light novel enjoyer, the main reason the fanbase can get nitpicky is because 1) there is a different, and more immersive, feel to light novels and many nitpicks are just trying to show what was lost in the transition to anime and 2) THERE ARE SOO MANY BOTCHED ADAPTATIONS!!! About half of the light novel adapted anime are twice as bad as the source material, and it's not just because of the missing details. Many times the pacing is bad, the budget is not there or a hundred other ways it could go wrong. So while the fanbase can be nitpicky, light novels are great and are worth reading, especially if it's anime was horrible
It's alright. The anime does a good job on its main selling point, which is Sword Dad and Fran's dynamic. But it also suffers from a lack of care in some of the other areas. The setting is incredibly generic. The videogame features of the world are WAY too hamfisted, and it pulls me right the hell out when even the goblins mention stuff like "god points" or whatever. System Lady just gives Sword Dad all the answers he needs, it's a wonder why he even needs to wonder about what to do. I guess it'd be fine if only Sword Dad could use the system like it's a videogame, as perhaps a side effect of his reincarnation, but when everyone refers to XP and points, and leveling up, it really breaks the immersion. The show can't go for more than 10 seconds without reminding you that it's a videogame. And then there's the videogame system for Teacher and Fran being WAY TOO DAMN CONVENIENT for them. He gains like a thousand skills within the first five minutes of the show. There's no way you can make these skills feel at all unique when you just keep handing them out to the protag. They level up way too fast, and become OP way too fast. Naofumi, Rimuru, and Kumoko all took way longer with way more work and suffering before they reached a point where they felt OP. And even when they became OP, there were still bigger threats that could flatten them. Sword Dad and Fran basically become top dogs (minus Amanda) super fast, and it takes away any tension that could be had. Sure, the demon guy was tough, but the moment you think he has them on the ropes, Sword Dad just immediately alleviates the tension. Oh no, Fran's hands were cut off, INSTANT HEAL. Oh no, demon stole her skills, now she will have to make do with her natural abilities rather than OP protagonist videogame powers. Nope, her skills can't be stolen. Oh no, Fran is separated from Teacher. Nevermind, she just jumps around for a bit and he just finds her. She faces the mortal enemies of her species, a Blue Cat, oh no, how will she get out of this one---and he's way too weak to hurt her so once she gets over her fear its all good. And basically every other character other than Sword Dad and Fran are awful and lazy. You could not make it more clear that they're the protagonists and everyone else are just extras that only exist to either support Fran or be insignificant obstacles for her to overcome. From the offset, no other adventurer even comes close to her, other than Amanda. The obstacles are so lazily designed too, without much in the way of logical in-universe sense. For example, the "traps" in the second dungeon were awful. They were so obviously written by the author rather than something that you could see being logically built as traps within the world. Oh look, this teleport trap that they happen to just fall in. This button on the floor earthbends a rock to hit Fran, rather than do something actually logical for a pressure plate trap. The traps in this show make the ones in Indiana Jones feel plausible. They just do whatever to slightly inconvenience the characters. The show puts so much effort into the Sword Dad and Fran dynamic that it basically went to the bargain bin for every other aspect of the story. And I mean, I guess if you had to choose to focus your energy on something, focusing on the selling point of the series isn't a bad idea. But you still want the rest of the story and world to feel at least serviceable for the dynamic. Amanda serves as the All Might analogue for this series, the highest ranking adventurer that we know of. But she's...boring. Sure, the thing with her protecting children is nice, but...she needs more than that.
they are fiends, Fiends are those that gain power from the war god aka the god of evil who is lock and whose pieces are spread through the land. The bad guys are people that are trying to use the gods powers that pop up several time in the light novel

The show had enough problems, I tried to explain to a friend why they should watch it because its pretty good, and they decided the whole thing was a joke and linked me this video. I guess you fixed one problem for me, I don't think my friend will take my anime recommendations seriously anymore, so that's one less thing we have to talk about.
I enjoyed the Sword Isekai anime. It's not a masterpiece, but above average, even with the bare bones isekai world building the meh side cast besides the main characters. The dialogue is OK, and the animation is old school that likes good interesting poses that last seconds instead of high frame rate sakuga. But the soundtrack is pretty fire. The relationship between Fran, Teacher and later on Amanda is priceless. I would say this is one of the best Slice-Of-Life isekai I've seen until now, it has it's dark and tense moments, but it's more about food and cute Fran in the rest. I recommend the anime for people who want a more wholesome isekai, which is fanservice-less and harem-less.
Have you heard of To Your Eternity? It's not an isekai, it's more of a vanilla fantasy, but the protag kinda starts as a rock before transforming into other stuff.

You should watch/read Ascendance of a Bookworm. It's really good, held back by a 7/10 anime adaptation. They left out so much worldbuilding man.

Maybe it's just me, but I think your "recommended video" and "most recent video" links are switched, i.e., your "most recent video" shows up as the review on bocchi the rock and the "recommended video" is your most recent video being "a comprehensive guide to waifus." I don't think this was your intention, but I have just subscribed to your channel literal hours before writing this and have watched my first video from your channel last night, so I can't say for sure.

I just want to tell lunar as a long time supporter and a light novel enjoyer, the main reason the fanbase can get nitpicky is because 1) there is a different, and more immersive, feel to light novels and many nitpicks are just trying to show what was lost in the transition to anime and 2) THERE ARE SOO MANY BOTCHED ADAPTATIONS!!! About half of the light novel adapted anime are twice as bad as the source material, and it's not just because of the missing details. Many times the pacing is bad, the budget is not there or a hundred other ways it could go wrong. So while the fanbase can be nitpicky, light novels are great and are worth reading, especially if it's anime was horrible
Yeah, DataKen is a pretty decent adaptation when compared with most LN based animes
It's alright. The anime does a good job on its main selling point, which is Sword Dad and Fran's dynamic. But it also suffers from a lack of care in some of the other areas.
The setting is incredibly generic.
The videogame features of the world are WAY too hamfisted, and it pulls me right the hell out when even the goblins mention stuff like "god points" or whatever. System Lady just gives Sword Dad all the answers he needs, it's a wonder why he even needs to wonder about what to do. I guess it'd be fine if only Sword Dad could use the system like it's a videogame, as perhaps a side effect of his reincarnation, but when everyone refers to XP and points, and leveling up, it really breaks the immersion. The show can't go for more than 10 seconds without reminding you that it's a videogame.
And then there's the videogame system for Teacher and Fran being WAY TOO DAMN CONVENIENT for them. He gains like a thousand skills within the first five minutes of the show. There's no way you can make these skills feel at all unique when you just keep handing them out to the protag. They level up way too fast, and become OP way too fast. Naofumi, Rimuru, and Kumoko all took way longer with way more work and suffering before they reached a point where they felt OP. And even when they became OP, there were still bigger threats that could flatten them. Sword Dad and Fran basically become top dogs (minus Amanda) super fast, and it takes away any tension that could be had. Sure, the demon guy was tough, but the moment you think he has them on the ropes, Sword Dad just immediately alleviates the tension. Oh no, Fran's hands were cut off, INSTANT HEAL. Oh no, demon stole her skills, now she will have to make do with her natural abilities rather than OP protagonist videogame powers. Nope, her skills can't be stolen. Oh no, Fran is separated from Teacher. Nevermind, she just jumps around for a bit and he just finds her. She faces the mortal enemies of her species, a Blue Cat, oh no, how will she get out of this one---and he's way too weak to hurt her so once she gets over her fear its all good.
And basically every other character other than Sword Dad and Fran are awful and lazy. You could not make it more clear that they're the protagonists and everyone else are just extras that only exist to either support Fran or be insignificant obstacles for her to overcome. From the offset, no other adventurer even comes close to her, other than Amanda.
The obstacles are so lazily designed too, without much in the way of logical in-universe sense. For example, the "traps" in the second dungeon were awful. They were so obviously written by the author rather than something that you could see being logically built as traps within the world. Oh look, this teleport trap that they happen to just fall in. This button on the floor earthbends a rock to hit Fran, rather than do something actually logical for a pressure plate trap. The traps in this show make the ones in Indiana Jones feel plausible. They just do whatever to slightly inconvenience the characters.
The show puts so much effort into the Sword Dad and Fran dynamic that it basically went to the bargain bin for every other aspect of the story. And I mean, I guess if you had to choose to focus your energy on something, focusing on the selling point of the series isn't a bad idea. But you still want the rest of the story and world to feel at least serviceable for the dynamic.
Amanda serves as the All Might analogue for this series, the highest ranking adventurer that we know of. But she's...boring. Sure, the thing with her protecting children is nice, but...she needs more than that.

If remember correctly, goblins are literally labeled as Evil Beings. It's safe to say nobody likes them in that world.
they are fiends, Fiends are those that gain power from the war god aka the god of evil who is lock and whose pieces are spread through the land. The bad guys are people that are trying to use the gods powers that pop up several time in the light novel

Why did you feel the need to make it sound way more stupid than it is? The show had enough problems, I tried to explain to a friend why they should watch it because its pretty good, and they decided the whole thing was a joke and linked me this video. I guess you fixed one problem for me, I don't think my friend will take my anime recommendations seriously anymore, so that's one less thing we have to talk about.

I enjoyed the Sword Isekai anime. It's not a masterpiece, but above average, even with the bare bones isekai world building the meh side cast besides the main characters. The dialogue is OK, and the animation is old school that likes good interesting poses that last seconds instead of high frame rate sakuga. But the soundtrack is pretty fire.
The relationship between Fran, Teacher and later on Amanda is priceless. I would say this is one of the best Slice-Of-Life isekai I've seen until now, it has it's dark and tense moments, but it's more about food and cute Fran in the rest.
I recommend the anime for people who want a more wholesome isekai, which is fanservice-less and harem-less.
