This was the director's first actual role as a director in his career, as he's only ever directed ep 16 of fgo babylonia for the fight scenes I believe. He did an excellent job, there are small details and symbolisms that depict the story, the camera angles are great, and god damn, the fido scene on ep 10 was so good.
In all seriousness, he elevated the source material well beyond the LN's. I tried to get into them as I got hooked on the show, but... they aren't terrible, but the pacing alone is much worse. Then there are all those little moments and how the shots were framed.... If the books were 7/10 then the anime was a solid 10/10.
The LN is great. The anime is even better because of the stellar direction. PD: The only reason for a character to have plot armor in this series is for them to get even more trauma later.
What I love about episode 22 and 23 is that Shin and Lena's reactions mirror each in a way and have their significant differences, when Shin saw Lena in E22, very triumphant music (Voices of the Chord) was playing, representing the fact that Shin's depressing and grim thoughts have been defeated. As for Lena seeing Shin for first time in E23, wholesome music (Lilas) was playing. The battle was over and Lena was immensely relieved to see Shin and the others alive and well. We need the next season, I hope they really make it.
Also the moment when shin saw lena the armour plate piece with his brothers name dropped out of view under the seat, showing him leaving the past behind
@@kerbodynamicx472 I mean the light novel goes on way further and I believe is not finished yet. The anime just ends in a way you could see it as an ending to the series, but there is much more to come
It’s also amazing because they had production issues during the last season. Despite that they were able to keep the so quality high and add details to enhance it. this is my favorite anime and I really respect them all they went through.
The last frame where Shin and Lena go to hold hands, and the silhouettes of their hands form the number 86, and cuts to the 86 title card, is one of the most beautiful transitions I’ve ever seen
Side note, Giad used to be an empire to which Frederica was heir apparent. Giad is a Federal Republic now, aka the Federacy. The Giad Empire created the Legion at Frederica's parents' behest and declared war on the continent. Frederica was the only survivor of the Imperial family after the civil war. Unfortunately the last order the Legion received was to destroy all enemies of the Empire, and since the Empire no longer exists, the enemy is every other country in the world left. Good video though!
Gota say, for me 86 was easily anime of the season and a very strong contender for anime of the year when it came out. Although it was riddle with production issues, I really hope we get to see a season 2 because this was an amazing ride. Also, I know you already said it but the cgi was simply fire.

Uber corrupt leadership constantly lying to the public trying to make their military look mightier than it really is (remember that bullshit with the "Ghost of Kiev" and the "Snake Island Massacre"). I haven't even gotten into how Chinese students and foreign workers were being beaten and stoned in the streets by Ukie civilians taking out their anger on the most convenient targets when the invasion started. Well to be fair it's pretty clear they butchered season 2 on purpose since the tortoise arc is considered the worst arc by far of the entire novel although they could've developed the new characters way better than they did
@@okita_souji_alter Books aren't that bad. Mostly for character development scenes and MMORPG style. In the LN there is a lot of attention to item stats, upgrading old ones, raising skill levels and maxing traits. We got plenty of dialogues to make readers attached to both new and old characters. 5:31 while yes the self destruction didn’t kill Shin the main point was to destroy the railgun mech so that it couldn’t be salvaged and reused by the humans. Self destruction of technology in wars was definitely a thing that happened during the Cold War but not sure about any wars before then.
It happened in previous wars as well, just what was worth destroying varied. Charts and other valuable information were tossed overboard in weighted pouches during the Age of Sail (and before then, no doubt). Tanks would be destroyed if they had to be left behind as you retreated in WW2. There's always scorched earth tactics, where you torch everything you can as you retreat. Ships had scuttling charges to avoid their capture (Bismarck's were used, though she'd have sank regardless, as were the ones on various U-boats). And, in the Pacific, the USS Wasp was scuttled through torpedoes fired by the USS Lansdowne, to avoid her potential capture.
Criminally overrated. This is literally another generic mech that tries to be deep. Same political warfare with bad, forgettable characters. Code geass, even though medicore, was far better
This anime, especially Shin resonated to me in a way that I can emphasize with people that have lost their friends and family (to war/disease). When you experience or imagine these depressing events many times, you'll reach a point of stoicism where you will become alexithymia (indifference or numbness to the happenings around you mentally & emotionally). Not having the desire to purpue the things you enjoyed previously in life to the same extent. There may be a few things that you continue doing, but that's it. You don't really enjoy social gatherings for superficial meet-ups, nor explore the world (Covid pandemic worsened prospects of travelling). You retain your emotions, but they only surface when you're interacting with another person you feel emotionally attached to. After joining the military I truly understood what true friendship was suppose to be. You feel pain and struggle, but your buddies are also feeling the exact pains and emotions you do. Yet they still support you or you support them through the grueling challenges. These friendships in the military become lifelong bonds of souls. What makes war so sad and painful is that your best friends can be taken from your life and the life of their families at any moment.
I absolutely love this anime even with the issues they had behind production. Amazing world building 2 amazing main characters and a great story serving as a criticism for abusive governments. The second opening was absolutely amazing too

Even when 86 gets to the giad they still get treated no different once in the army and the parts of taking child as "mascot" (hostage) etc.

I had watched 86 when it came out in 2021, and my opinion about it at the time was " It's just a good anime, nothing more " and my rating for it at the time was only 7/10. But with time and after hearing many people's opinions about it and how it is a great anime and its story is deep, my mind started wondering " Was the anime really that great but I am the one who didn't understand it? I finished watching it a while ago and honestly the anime was really great and much better than I thought. I can say that 86 is simply one of the best mecha and drama anime ever. Nah, it's a 7/10 altogether. A pretty strong 7/10, but still a 7/10. This is a good entry into real robo mecha, but not much else. See, 86 is being called a "masterpiece" by people who don't have experience with mecha. And the big problem with 86 is... it's not original. It straight up isn't original. Themes of war, personal sacrifices and hatred of others not alike have been done before, and I might add with a lot more nuance, in older mecha shows. SPT Layzner is a great example. It's a show from the mid 80s that touches upon a lot of the same themes as 86 does but with WAY MORE TACT. Really, if 86 was released 20 years ago back when we weren't literally starving for any sort of mecha, this would've been an average show. Would recommend, but only as a starting point to get into mecha, otherwise you're not missing all that much.
@@mechamaniac1567 So a story has to be original for it to be considered great ? I guess every anime after 2010 is a 7/10 at best, because other shows have already done it in the past. The concept of an original story is really great don't get me wrong, but other shows that come after them will try to implement many different experimental parts of said older story and adapt it to the vision of the author, and when it's great, it could be way better than the story they take inspiration from.
@Reralex My comment is intended for those people who overhype 86 and think it's somehow revolutionary for mecha. Sure, I personally consider a ton of stuff great, but I don't pretend that it's some kind of groundbreaking show when it, surprise surprise, isn't a complete innovation. And I've seen a lot of misinformed videos who claim that 86 is somehow LE GREATEST EVER when those youtubers have watched, like, what, 3 or 4 other mecha shows? I've seen a similar case with Evangelion too. I think it's a great show but it really isn't all that groundbreaking as the reviewers and some fans want you to believe.
it was really fun to watch as a huge fan of this anime who recently finished it. with all writings and animations I also loved techincal details on this anime like real life armor piercing ammos, sabots, spearhead behing a real life military term and tactic etc. I enjoy it more when I see such details. They know not everyone will understand these but its about passion.
Yeah, seing APFSDS round fired by the legion triggered some War Thunder PTSD, but as long as they don't have CAS it is okay But honestly, APFSDS is a bit overkill, mechas with legs can't be armored a lot if not at all, so just APHE or just HE (especially coming from an angry soviet fridge with murderous intent aka KV2) would work, using HE just fire near the legs of the old mech of the Republic and they are gone and thus can't move if it didn't already destroyed the mech But apart from that, Eighty Six is a 10/10, just a masterpiece and I hope would become a classical
I am not gonna lie I really enjoyed watching your review for 86. I laughed so hard while watching the video. It is one of my favourite anime but as you mentioned there are some parts that leave a question mark in the minds. Despite all, the anime is 10/10 to me.
Wait, seriously?! Why are people so stupid, it's an amazing storytelling device, wrought with built-in conflict and morality (or lack thereof). Do some shows handle it poorly? Yeah, but 86 ain't one of them! This is one of my favorite shows, it's an amazing story, every scene has meaning, it's been adapted amazingly from the ln, FIDO. Seriously, what's not to like??

Der Giadische Kaiserreich was overthrown and replaced by Das Bundesrepublik Giad right after the legion war started, so referring to the federal republic as the empire is kind of a misnomer
analysis that isnt mine: Shin was hated for his title, having being the only survivor of all the squads hes transferred tof being in the same squad as him meant certain death, so yea being akames friend has more chances of not biting the dust
Yup, alot of squads viewed his joining as bringing devil's luck to the squad which brought a sure demise to them, while others who noticed shin's kindness found his joining as a god's gift that their deaths will be easier and will actually contribute to something, towards shin's journey's end atleast.
How did I not know about the last 2 episodes???!!!! I thought 21 was the last but I guess they just had a huge delay between episodes?? I’m gonna catch up rn
I was so gonna suggest thus anime but I didn't cuz its heavy, and by far the best anime/LN ever, so this video is a mix of feelings, it's great really, but since ik how heavy it is, I'm also ehhhhhhh
You got two things wrong (kinda), while they were all at the brink of death, Shin's brother swoops in using another Legion mech he got and saves them, taking them all the way to federacy borders. The mech was can be seen in ep 12. It was also why they were thought of as "Legion spies". And they didn't join the Army of the "Empire" since they no longer exist, they're a Federacy now. Very minor, but hey.
I love this anime this is definitely top 3 for anime of the year from the music to characters it’s all great I get a aot vibe when I watch this is definitely a 9.5/10 anime I just wish we got more of Lena with the other squad we need a season 2
Thank you so much for reviewing this anime! At first I actually hated Lena because I thought she was a hypocrite and she was a painful reminder of how I have the same flaws as her. But as the series went on, she learned to accept her flaws, accept that she can’t change the reality of her society, and with positive reality believe she can change this world for the better as long as she keeps fighting. I rarely ever seen the realities of racism so well depicted in anime before, except for maybe AOT. And her character development has been so well executed. As for Shin, at first I thought he was going to be a flat character who is emotionless for no particular reason which is something anime is often guilty of. But I was surprised with how complex he was as a character. His journey is far from over so I hope there will be a season 2.
Ok this thing has 11 VOLUMES seperately sold. Not available natively in my country. Import charges are freaking High due to global recession First 2 season complete volume 2 and half
I agree I think of his friends should have died. However there is a counterpoint that I was thinking about, they are the five that were able to somehow managed to not die during what amounted to a suicide mission when they left the republic, so maybe the reason why they didn’t die is because they are in fact just that skilled. I had trouble getting connected to some of the characters and really feeling upset when they died. A lot of the characters were developed enough for me to care.
this is just me looking at it differently....I think shin's ability to hear the legion is a power of nouzen bloodline... it just happen that shin's power awekened after his brother choked him and found no one to explain to him afterward... it's confirmed by Kiriya.. since both Kiriya and Shin are actually from Giad Empire alongside Frederica.. Kiriya said "We(the emperor's family) want that power (of Nouzen family)". also foreshadowed or rather spoiled when Annette talk about her childhood 86 friend (which is Shin) and the making of paraRAID --shadow legend-- through human experiment including shin's family as the basis pf paraRAID.. Nouzen family have the power of telepathy.

New title: Roasting 86 then trying to say sorry in the end.
😭🤣
it was really fun to watch as a huge fan of this anime who recently finished it. with all writings and animations I also loved techincal details on this anime like real life armor piercing ammos, sabots, spearhead behing a real life military term and tactic etc. I enjoy it more when I see such details. They know not everyone will understand these but its about passion.
also soundtracks were made by two main composers of Attack on Titan which proves that this anime is really good and special
Yeah, seing APFSDS round fired by the legion triggered some War Thunder PTSD, but as long as they don't have CAS it is okay
But honestly, APFSDS is a bit overkill, mechas with legs can't be armored a lot if not at all, so just APHE or just HE (especially coming from an angry soviet fridge with murderous intent aka KV2) would work, using HE just fire near the legs of the old mech of the Republic and they are gone and thus can't move if it didn't already destroyed the mech
But apart from that, Eighty Six is a 10/10, just a masterpiece and I hope would become a classical
I am not gonna lie I really enjoyed watching your review for 86. I laughed so hard while watching the video. It is one of my favourite anime but as you mentioned there are some parts that leave a question mark in the minds. Despite all, the anime is 10/10 to me.
Fido such a good boy
Really loved this anime, such a shame a lot of people went on calling it trash just because of the themes it tackles
*cough* Connor *cough*
@@salvadortoscano2534.....Ihate it...(Iam reverse flash for real)
86 is one of the best animes ever made! No discussion is needed.
Honestly I think you're right how come I only found out about it mid 2023 😭😭
💯 agreed.
agreed.
Thank you for reviewing one of my favorite animes.
Fido best character, change my mind
Also nice review, keep it up!
Thanks!
Idk how 86 didnt get anime of the year great anime I never wanted to watch it at first cuhz it had terrible promo n it didn't look good but I got bored asf 1 day after work smh one of the best anime decisions I ever made taught me just try couple episodes of every anime dat doesn't look super weak unless its isekai
It was a great series. Very moving and emotional.
How can you say that you never seen good CGI in anime?! Fate Zero and Fate Stay Night UBW and Heaven's Feel had a ton of CGI.
Probably didnt notice since they blended it so well
You want actual good CGI?
Try watching any animated short from honkai impact 3rd
Yeah but the thing with those is that most of the cgi is used on the background effects instead of the characters and models themselves
did it lol? I don't remember
Nah, the best use of CGI, Kara no Kyoukai.
Dude this is a really good review. Cracking me up.
Hi Bye, lol that’s something I say, I see someone I know and say hi and as we walk past I say bye, never stopped to talk :)
Erratum: Humans fighting against Skynet with mech cockroaches.
Found your channel because of this video. Its like if overanalyzing avatar met my mothers basement, and I really enjoy it. Also 86 is one of my favorite anime with one of the most satisfying endings I have seen in a while.
A modern masterpiece
For some reason the subaru dying joke got me, man.
* When countless Giadian people die fighting the imperial government to turn the country into a Federation and Lunar still calls them an Empire*
gonna be 100% honest ... I just looked up what they were called on the internet after I finished it because I forgot to write down what they were called
86 was pretty good. Not the biggest fan of mecha but I think they did pretty well with everything. The first ed & op 1 & 2 were so good! Also obligatory ask to review Link Click & Re:Life.
bonus ask! A Silent Voice & School-Live!👀
Der Giadische Kaiserreich was overthrown and replaced by Das Bundesrepublik Giad right after the legion war started, so referring to the federal republic as the empire is kind of a misnomer
I'm late but the self-destruct sequence is actually a last-ditch effort to ensure that the enemy doesn't capture the Legion's technology.
This is easily my favorite anime and yet this is still easily one of my favorites yt vids
86 is what darling in the franxx coulda possibly been if it didnt have too much fanservice/ecchi.
My favorite anime of 2021 I'm happy see to that's it's getting reviewed.
That one about the s squad was great
86 is so good I'm so glad u watched it, it's in my top 10 I love it so much
Dude that start with World War 2 had me rolling😭
If you're into Mecha Anime. I recommend Gurren Lagann. Don't forget about the Movies too.
analysis that isnt mine:
Shin was hated for his title, having being the only survivor of all the squads hes transferred tof being in the same squad as him meant certain death, so yea being akames friend has more chances of not biting the dust
Yup, alot of squads viewed his joining as bringing devil's luck to the squad which brought a sure demise to them, while others who noticed shin's kindness found his joining as a god's gift that their deaths will be easier and will actually contribute to something, towards shin's journey's end atleast.
Love this anime, clearly best girl is Fido but Lena is fine too I guess🤷🏼♂️ Nice vid brother
This guy never fails to make me laugh 😂
Banger.
I never heard of this show, but since it has Anime Fascism I'll be sure to check it out sometime. Probably four years from now :)
Rarely you get closure in an Anime ending
my most fav anime in recent year
Do vivy next it's pretty good
yeah this was a good anime, mabye best of the year, just hope for a season 2
Just finished Season 1 man what a masterpiece anime
How did I not know about the last 2 episodes???!!!! I thought 21 was the last but I guess they just had a huge delay between episodes?? I’m gonna catch up rn
Is it good? :)
@@hijisfriend9030 yes
This analisys was great
Day 3 of asking you to review Kara no kyoukai😶
Agreed, but god not the tsukuhime anime, it wasn't a good adaptation
@@massa04.5 ahh gotta agree! Even I was sleeping thru the entire episodes😅
That's why we don't talk about it
Good brethern👍🏾👍🏾
I plan on doing it but I am on a fate break I want to do some other anime's I have had on my list for a while
Raiden was riding Fido and his mech was on autopilot, that s how he survived.
actually frieza didnt turn black in the movie, it was the latest manga release
ohhhhh lol thanks for telling me I just see the memes
@2:11 isnt this incorrect? It's due to their bloodline, no?
hi just came out of Iron Blooded Orphans and can't wait to hear you ROAST
86 has meaning, it means to "discard" or "throw away" something.
The ending was good making up for darling in the Franxx's ending 10/10
Dare you to do start doing all the Gundam Series
I love this anime this is definitely top 3 for anime of the year from the music to characters it’s all great I get a aot vibe when I watch this is definitely a 9.5/10 anime I just wish we got more of Lena with the other squad we need a season 2
Bro i didn't get the notifications of thia video even though i have notifications bell on.
I will sue youtube for you my guy don't worry 😂appreciate your support
8:26 Yep. That's my response to that line...
You should definitely read the Light Novel. The Anime was a good adaptation but there actually is a lot more depth and world building to the story.
"The leader of the group, Shinei, can hear the robots because his bbrother killed him once" ..... yup
Ok this thing has 11 VOLUMES seperately sold.
Not available natively in my country.
Import charges are freaking High due to global recession
First 2 season complete volume 2 and half
Hey lunar you should do some of RWBY
I agree I think of his friends should have died. However there is a counterpoint that I was thinking about, they are the five that were able to somehow managed to not die during what amounted to a suicide mission when they left the republic, so maybe the reason why they didn’t die is because they are in fact just that skilled.
I had trouble getting connected to some of the characters and really feeling upset when they died. A lot of the characters were developed enough for me to care.
8.6 ?!
I think I have to watch 86
this is just me looking at it differently....I think shin's ability to hear the legion is a power of nouzen bloodline... it just happen that shin's power awekened after his brother choked him and found no one to explain to him afterward... it's confirmed by Kiriya.. since both Kiriya and Shin are actually from Giad Empire alongside Frederica..
I agree with you that they should have died or at the very least Raiden should have
86? Sound like Code Geass: Spider edition!
Wait... 86 is literally Code Geass: Akito the exiled? Am I the only one who thought about that?
how many mecha anime have you watched?
As popular as Code Geass is, I never hear anyone talk about Boukoku no Akito, which makes me wonder how many people watched it.
@@SilverKarma Pretty decent? but I watch a lot of Social-Politics Anime... and 86 is one of them.
So in my point of view 86 is like Code Geass: Akito the exiled... but better
@@baka_monogatari3389 i hated how the animation looked so i just read about the events/plot and didn't watch it, in the end the only thing that "mattered" on that spin-off was Julius.
Magnolia is also an ice cream brand in the Philippines
Season 1 is only the prologue. season 2 is the real shit
one day i hope to see lunar review record of ragnarok so i can see adam at best girl tier
