I work primarily consulting commercial contractors and agree it takes *SO MUCH* to be good. The guys that fake it never make it. It takes years of experience in the field to bid and operate 100k jobs.

Hey Jesse, I like these short videos! Short but to the point. You are completely right about getting that experience/ industry knowledge before starting a Construction Business. When someone dives into the construction business with construction knowledge and understanding, you are more susceptible to success, you are a better leader to your subs and employees, you take better care of your customers because you know the importance of their project, you put out a quality product and communication is phenomenal. I’m sure it also alleviates a lot of errors and bad reputation at the beginning stages which for sure no one wants in their business.

Yo fellas ever want to become a General contractor well my story is i learned the labor side of working being an employee. Learned how to do the work from. Need to be very independent. Fails suck but have to learn as much as you can in the field. I am not a general contractor but I was a foreman. Hoping to be a general contractor soon. I say working in construction starting off at a job you are trained to even build your own home one day so you wont need employees that can sav you money for a future home.
The age old conundrum I wanna be a contractor but I have no experience, get experience how I have no experience get experience lol thanks for the vid.

I’m turning 20 in 2 months and haven’t done anything to solidify my future plans. I know the end goal of mine would be to become a contractor but I need to get into construction first I guess. Would you recommend taking a class on all those categories being electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc? I plan to go to job corps to take a construction class but am not sure.
It’s not going to be as fast as you think, but just join an apprentice and learn.

I don't have my license yet, but I have Two clients who want me to build a pool in their backyards. Can I sub out the job to a pool company, and add a small percentage to the cost of the project? The company I plan on using is licensed. Is that ok, possible? Thanks.

Jesse Lane do contractors normally throw away all of the personal possession of the owner that get in is way when he is re-doing the kitchens and the bathroom. I am horrified if this is the practice. This guy must have thrown out at least 700 dollars worth of stuff.
40 years in the business. All I can say is don't become a General Contractor. Go to school. Learn a trade that is neat and clean.
Trust me. It's unhealthy both physically and mentally being a General Contractor. It's a huge dirty cluster of headaches no matter your quality of work and excellence. There is always something to work around that wasn't planned.
I should have become a psychologist after dealing with neurotic customers that don't understand what real work is .
The time and money it takes to get quality results.
Anyway, Don't be a General Contractor. Become a Gynecologist or a MONK or something else.

@@Jesse_Lane God Bless you young man. I lived it and look back at it as the hardest work ever besides being in the Marine Corps for 4 years. I'm happy you enjoy doing it. Most people don't understand how much work it really is. Are you in the trenches working or mainly selling jobs? I was doing both and it burnt me out.
I'm older, lazier, and to be honest......I don't have the ambition to rock it like I did when I was in business. I like my hourly wage with no headaches these days. A couple small weekend jobs are nice to.

Average salary for a contractor in Florida is around 118k. I’m in Toronto and our average is slightly higher at $123k. If you are offering advice to GCs and future GCs it’s a fair question. Good luck! And, it’s a great career for women too!
@@DaruDhillon I'm making 23k every month. I learned through all my years since I started my company that the best thing here is to get between 3-4 and finalize with 6-8 projects each year and you will be making so much more money, all you have to do is get high quality projects (400k+) big additions, custom homes, tenant improvements and stop chasing money and the whole idea of closing projects, sometimes(If you are ambitious like me) you get stuck up on closing, closing ans closing deals...1 million...2 million....3 million but at the end all you doing is chasing sales but you are not chasing profitability which is the life line of the business. Focus on getting a few but REALLY rewarding projects (30%+ profit margin) and you will not only have more money on your pocket but happier customers as you will be focusing on them and not running around like a headless chicken around town. That's my advise, worked good for me! Just hit 6 million last year and made 40% off of that, just by doing that exact tactic.
