    Question of the day: If you were to model in any other scale than what you currently do, which would you choose?

      I model in HO, but if I had to change, it would be Proto:48.

      I model HO and I've tried N, but it was just too small, so I guess I'd try O scale.

      I model HO but I have considered switching to N due to the ability to fit more trains in the same space. The only thing keeping me in HO scale is the greater variety of locomotives and rolling stock. I have several locomotives and cars that are not available in N. I might do a second layout in N though someday.

    Small layouts are fantastic! I once modeled a 1x1 meter (that's 3x3 feet) layout with my son with just a circle of track. Man, the fun we had with that. Bridges, mountains, a tunnel, selfmade trees, a herd of sheep, fishermen in the creek, it was great. Small layouts make you focus on detail, and that's where the fun is for me.

      Hello! I agree with you 100%…you can have a lot of fun in a small space. I recall being a kid with a 4x8 layout- and that seemed like an entire little world to me. Smaller layouts are good exercises in being creative and using your imagination!

    I seen that G-Scale layout last February 25th, 2023 in Bentonville, Arkansas at The 20th Annual Great NWA Train Show. I was very impressed as well at the detail involved with various scenes.

    I’m relatively new to actual model railroading (I’ve always stuck to setting things up on a table or floor and running trains) but my first railroad is tiny by the standards of these “small” railroads
    My first (and only) railroad is a 2’x5’ On30 setup, using flex track to achieve ~10” radius curves. Three switches for a simple shunt yard and siding, enough to keep things simple in a properly tiny area to learn the ins and outs of modeling.
    I’m having a blast so far and probably going to come back to your channel for ideas on what to do with it once I’m out of the track laying phase 100%. Keep up the good content, it all looks very professional and well done

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  Рік тому +1

      Hi, there! I appreciate you watching! It sounds like you’ve got a nice little setup going on. I worked with small shelf type layouts for several years. I could never do much more than run a short train back and forth, but it allowed me to learn a lot before biting a bigger chunk, so to speak. Like you mentioned- having a blast is what’s important! Thanks again for joining us here on the channel! -Mike

    I really don't understand the slot car speeds some trains execute on such small layouts! Totally unrealistic.

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  7 місяців тому +5

      Hi there! Yes, using prototypical speeds is a good idea for an operations-based layout. I know at a lot of these shows, many feel a need to speed things up for kids so things are more captivating and exciting. It can be a conundrum balancing realism with today’s attention spans! Ha.

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  4 місяці тому

      Hello! I wasn't aware of the major price differences there. Is this because of shipping prices? I know I've looked on ebay at some items overseas, and the shipping is often twice the price of the item -Mike

    • @chuckmaddison2924
      @chuckmaddison2924 4 місяці тому

      @MainTrack I guess prices are all relative. Our $ is about 66c US. But Transport does make a difference.
      I live on the West Coast and a fair bit comes from the east which adds a bit.
      In 2006 it cost me $ 3000 to bring a car over. Today, gasoline floats around $ 2.10 litre. We have had big bands play in the east and refuse to come west due to cost. Medical GP $ 90 per visit but can claim $ 40 back if you have a Medicare card. Filling on a molar about $ 350 .
      But stock availability is a pain.
      Currently there is a housing shortage being made worse by bloody migrants.
      I should not complain considering I'm a migrant : (.

    • @MainTrack

      Hi, Michael! HO is by far the most popular scale with the greatest number of available accessories. I’d say N would be second. I bought and still have a ton of N scale. I'm too old to see knuckler couplings that small and NOT happy Bachmann coupling do not connect to each other, brand new outa the box. SO here sits a a couple hundred $$$ of LED stuff and trains in boxes cuz I upgraded to HO.

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  2 місяці тому

      Many people would agree with you! But, I think setting up displays at shows can pose a conundrum. Slow speeds would of course be prototypical and the preference of most modelers. But, at a public event, you’ve got thousands of kids and guests with a very limited knowledge of the hobby- who would be extremely bored with a train creeping by very slowly. It’s a balance of capturing their attention while providing a basic introduction to the hobby. I tend to overlook high speeds on a display layout- as opposed to a layout designed for realistic operations…unless one is modeling a high speed bullet train route! Haha.
