Backstories and Story: Phineas and Ferb moved into Beach City with their sister Candace after (the parents are gone and Candace take care of her brothers). The two eventually meet Steven and become close friends, Phineas and Ferb are fascinated by Steven’s powers (with also befriending the Cristal Gems and Spinel) and Steven admire their creativity and inventions. Steven is 16 years old here, so he’s older then the boys and this meeting happens after the events of SU The Movie, with the exception of Spinel. The gem in fact, after had turn off the injector but then tried to kill Steven (like in the movie), he had no choice that reset Spinel and make her believe that she’s Steven’s friends, lying to her about her past. One day, through an accident with some ancient gem’s stuffs, Steven causes a deadly injure to Ferb (without knowing it like in Tangled with Varian’s father, something like that) and Phineas, blind from rage, tries to revenge his brother but Steven is able to defeat him. Ferb’s injury last for long and not even Steven is able to heal it, so he decides to, after a while, beg pardon to Phineas, who after some several trust and anger issue accepts turning back good and showing his suffer for his brother, and search with him a cure through the galaxy for some weeks before come back to home and finally save Ferb. All seemed to came back to normal, but Spinel starts having memories about a certain garden since Steven’s absence, and since she’s not allowed to use the portals asks help to Phineas since the two develop a close friendship. The boy helps her to reach the garden and there, all Spinel’s memories get back, including her resets, and hate and anger take control over her; she immediately take multiple injectors and with them she captures Phineas and attacks the earth earth. Beach City is officially destroyed, the Crystal Gems evacuated the inhabitants and since the danger in higher then the last time Steven decides to first study a strategy since Spinel has also Phineas in hostage. Phineas, witnessing the whole destruction of his home and his friends’ houses he tries to bring Spinel back to reason trying to calm her down and saying that he is her friend, that he’s sure Steven didn’t mean to resets her with bad intentions and to not make the same mistake that he did last time. Spinel is in huge conflict because she sincerely cared about Phineas and eventually befriended the Crystal Gems, but she realises that it was just all a lie, her trust issues and traumas came back to her and decides to trap Phineas as a guarantee and waits for Steven to come, once again, tortured by her pain.
Great story and video! I think maybe a the reason Varian's arc wasn't touched on as much as others in the first season was to show he wasn't that close with Rapunzel which would cause him to think she did care about him in Queen for a Day since he'd have nothing to compare the situation to. MINOR SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3: Varian and Rapunzel do seem to spend more time together and we see they're a lot closer then in the first season and Varian is speculated to have a main role in the final season. I'm not sure if this is the reason but that's just what I think it was. Also I think the only reason the writers turned Varian into a villian was to make sure he wasn't on Rapunzel's journey, since if he and Rapunzel were still friends in the S1 finale he would most likely go with the others since he also wanted answers on the rocks. The question is why? His alchemy being an easy escape from the challenges they faced? Or does he have a connection to the moonstone, and it would've been revealed sooner then the writers wanted?

From that point of view then I can understand why Varian has been "overshadowed" in the first season, actually it makes perfectly narrative sense to not show him more to makes us understand how lost he could have felt after his father's "lost", and also why he attacked Corona and Rapunzel; he felt rejected by everyone, nobody helped him and in the last episodes of the season he frees this frustration towards everyone and do everything he can to free his dad. For that, I basically saw a lot of clips from season 3 and the fact that Varian finally redeems himself, plus I saw few lines from your theory post (few 'cause I'm "crossing the line" for the spoilers of the serie, pardon the pun x)) and I kinda had the idea that Varian is somehow connected to the moonstone, since the father was also involved in that ancient reign. Now I don't have much information to go deeper into the topic since I'm still in the first episodes of the second season, but still I also got the idea that Varian will be involved into something big like the moon powers. (Like they could take place in the same AU, with ITGYB taking place sometime after this.) Sorry for the self promotion, but this made me think of that video, and I can already imagine a continuation of this, with the other P+F characters getting involved.
