  • Me and my cousin Dusty were on a large Texas ranch metal detecting when he dug an unbelievable coin cache.
    This was only going to be a recon mission to learn our way around the ranch. For that reason, I didn't have my Gopros and we weren't filming. I had to use my phone to capture this ordeal.
    We were stopping by house sites one after the next on this ranch. Dusty got an 11 on his Equinox at the last homesite. What happened next is where the video starts.
    Newest coins were 1967 and the oldest was 1891.

    Nice! Congratulation on finding a cache. In my almost 45 years of detecting I found several caches. One I named the Vietnam hoard. I'll explain why I gave it that name in the end after I talk a little about it and why i'm talking about it which I have onle done a few times. A friend I went to school with in the '80's lived on a nice size farmland (circa 1760) with several out buildings. I had detected around the field they grew the old crops loking for coppers and things. Then years back the home and out buildings were destroyed by salt water and severe wind damage in hurricane Sandy. The house was totaled along with the out buildings. It was sad because the insurance company really ripped him off trying to blame some on wind ramage but other on flooding. Flood damage here is not covered by private insurance companies its a seperate type of insurance many people werent aware of until after Sandy severely totaled 100's of homes on the the Jersey coast. Anyway after realizing it was a financial disaster and he couldnt rebuild he was forced to sell the property. When he was near closing and everyone removed anything they wanted off the property everyone and anyone was allowed to detect the entire propery including places previously off limits being one carraige house had been turned into an apartment in the '50's and his father made sure that area was off limits unless the renters agreed but nobody bothered being there was so much other land to hit. I had loaned my buddy a detector and he was mostly into looking for old toy cars he lost as a kid. Anyway after he hunted the areas he wanted girst crack at I went through using a Whites DFX. I hit this same spots other detectors hit and they kept discing it out as big iron. The DFX read and sounded off on iron as I expected it would. The DFX has a signagraph which is used to further ID metal targets by their target phase shift. That one problem area where every detector hunting in there (4 different machines in total) all went crazy with iron tones and the occasional falsing high tones in a spot about 3 feet around. Being there were sections of old wire fencing that had fallen and buried everybody passed by suggesting it is probably the gate buried down there and I initially did also. Being there was quite a bit of colonial relics and coins near that gate I thought what if there was a big silver or copper and the gate is over it so I flipped into the mixed mode and swept it slow and over several places where it appeared to false I noticed the signagraph lit up the left side which is ferrous but it had a tight group of bars on the right side (non ferrous). I kept sweeping hearing all the iron and it falses with another group of non ferrous gerrous bars in a tight area. Then I kept sweeping and it happens again. I decided to turn 90 degrees and hit that patch and see if it repeats over those same spots and sure enough its dead on every angle I went at it. I said what the heck i'm gonna dig it. I dug the first one down a good 14 inches or more and its an old steel and tin red Folgers coffee can and its sealed shut with some kind of a wax gluing the lid on it. Maybe it was bees wax IDK but the can was very heavy and as it was out of the hole and I rattled it I heard coins or something that sounds like coins. I immediately got nervous because coffee cans were a common place to put coins in that were hidden in basements or attics. I wanted to open it but I said to myself go check another signal like that which was about a foot away and I dig down deep and there it is another coffee can holy #%@&$. Now theres 2 coffee cans and there still more signals. After digging up that patch when all was said and done I had 6 coffee cans full of something that rattles like coins. When the iron patch was now GONE I swept the area and get a strong non iron signal. I dig that one down and 16 inches and OMG its a sterling silver sugar bowl with a lid also waxed closed. I put it all in a crate and brought them to my truck and I called these two other hunters over who he knew but I didnt so thats why I didnt call them while I was digging thinking they dont know me they might start digging the other signals. The look on these guys faces were priceless because O could tell they werent very friendly to me when they showed up and I was already hunting the property and I watched them walk right by these cans lol. The cans masked the silver sugar bowl but my good old DFX was dead on telling me its not all iron. I didnt open them until I got home be ause of the attitude from those 2 jokers. The cans were loaded with all silver coins from roosies to harbers SLQ's with good dates no less barber quarters halves an one can was morgan dollars. Funny thing was there was silver in all denominations starting back to morgans and barbers but not a one peace dollar??? Huh? But I was not upset over that one bit. Now the sugar bowl had the real prizes it had his personal things. Gold rings, early FDR campaign tokens, a few silver canadian coins, a sterling silver pill box that had a pin on it. The great seal from a WWI hat badge we believe being its about 1 1/2" a round, there were carved minnie balls I think may have been from his relative in the civil war because there were also a couple civil war tokens, 2 one dollar 1852 gold coins and a pair of bone dice and then there was a gold locket with an old picture from at least the '20's maybe earlier it wasnt in the best condition, maybe of his mother? or grandmother? IDK it wasnt any relative of my buddy which turned out great for me being I got to keep it which I wouldnt had it been from his family. It was buried behind the rental cottage (old carraige house). The newest coin were 5 - 1966 clad Kennedy halves. After talking with my friends neighbors who had been in there home for generations we found out a guy who rented it in the late '60's went off to Vietnam and was never heard from again and they didnt know what to do whether empty it and rent it back out because what if he returned after serving so they didnt empty it for a couple years. The timeline of those clad silvers sure seems like this is who was hoarding silver and buried it for safe keeping. Thus the name I gave it the Vietnam hoard.
    I didnt expect to tell this whole story but what I wanted to suggest for legal sake is that you total the amount of your find by face value. When you file your taxes you claim X amount of dollars in found coin change metal detecting. The reason I say this is there was a possible situation with those two guys who were mad I found that after they walked right on by and the word was they were going to report ke to the IRS. Keep in mind they never saw the contents. That years I reported all the money I found detecting. Silver being still legal tender at face value is not lieing on a tax form. So I paid tax on a couple hundred dollars in coin change which protected me from any future audit of what I had found which was a smart idea from the accountant who told me to do this because pounds of silver coins will not get appraised at face value.
    Its something to think about because some state laws state if you find something worth more then $500 in my state it must be turned in and held for 30 days and you much place an add in the paper lost and found section to see if the owner comes to recover it and if not it gets released to you. Cover your behind add the face value and slip it in your taxes if you think any ody would ever be jealous and stir up a headache.
    I thought I should share this helpful info to a fellow hunter who is harmlessly out enjoying life.
    Good find guys go find another if you see shiny yellow as tempting as it will be to show it. If it was me I would bite my lip and forget it happened wink wink lol

    congratulations on being one of the very few detectorists in the world to find any kind of hoard...This is what people did in the old days they didn't want the bank to have the money.. or anybody else for that matter.. so they'd bury it and think they were going to be able to get back to it one day...R.I.P.... .💀 Detectorist spend most of their lives trying to find that variety of coins let alone the quantity..... it's going to be hard to top that one😂🤣😅😂😆 g.l🏴‍☠️

      They didn't want the bank to have their pennies? This horde was mostly pennies. Seems odd to me that someone would bother to hide and bury jars of mostly pennies. I'm guessing it was probably a kid that did this ( sort of thing I would do when I was a kid ).

      @@johnsilva9139 well I guess if you're not a coin collector you wouldn't understand that there could be a great value in those pennies.. to each their own... you go ahead and think whatever you want... You're talkin to your avid treasure hunter here.. all those pennies are completely awesome find especially when you're young and you haven't experienced anything like that.. finding all those will prepare you for the future in treasure hunting because it makes you a better detectorists..
      Now that experienced finding that
      . you're able to tune your ears into something of similarity or maybe something of greater value that could end up in a museum it could be a lifetime find ..you don't know what's under your feet until you dig it up... So if it makes you feel better.. by all means please crush my comment ...feel free... You're not hurting my feelings none... I have found incredible treasures in my life.. I think that's great that that kid found all that. 🏴‍☠️

    I purchased a farm property in 2020 that's from the mid 1800's that was in a hoarder situation since 1976. Once the grounds are cleaned up I'm going to have a few friends and family bring their detectors to see if we can find anything. I'll be tearing the farmhouse down as it's not savable so I'm hoping there will be treasures in the walls and floors.

    • @Detecting4Life
      @Detecting4Life  Рік тому

      Dug coins are inherently worth less. Being buried for years and years doesn't do them any favor. Shaking them around in the scoop would not make any difference on their value. Plus, we could tell from the first few coins coming out of the hole that this was not that old of a cache. It was certainly awesome to be digging a cache but with its age we weren't too concerned about key dates or rare coins.
